Healthy eating, most of the time, when we mention about eating better, we only focus on eating more vegetables, fruit, and cut down intake of sugar, but we forgot about serving sizes.
1. Eat everything but in PORTIONS
Portions of food are significant, especially for those who are in 50 plus years of age. Why? Because our metabolism has slowed down as we’re aging, it’s easy to gain more weight and if one is also on medications without exercising. It’s tripling your problems. The best way to maintain the weight is cutting down large portions of food. That was my first step. It helps me to retain my weight. Oh, to clarify one thing, I’m not trying to lose weight for losing weight with fibromyalgia is an absurd thought unless you are on a specific medication that will cause weight loss. Still, one should eat a balanced meal because once you discontinue those particular medications. The weight gain will increase dramatically. Eating right is crucial. Besides, I don’t want to take more pills that associated with increasing weight.
2. More vegetables, fruit, and why
Second, eat more vegetables and fruit (V&F). Since I grew up on a farm, I love V&F. It tastes delicious. Living in Vietnam during my time, there wasn’t a refrigerator, so farmers would pick ripped V&F and sold on that same day. Now a day, V&F are picked early for exporting in different places or countries. V&F seem tasteless. No wonder kids don’t enjoy them. Or some areas would even use chemicals to quickly ripen fruit (Calcium Carbide, Ethylene, and Ethephon), just to make extra bucks. One has to buy organic V&F for a better flavor. If one is penniless, organic food is unattainable. The only way to afford organic food is to grow it yourself. Growing your vegetables, not only you have fresh herbs, but you could also eat everything, like the flower, leaf, or its root. Oh, growing plants in containers, it’s more manageable (get family or friends to help you).
There are two types of V&F, starchy and non-starchy. Supposedly, starchy V&F will increase your calories than non-starchy ones. For me, I eat all different kinds because I love V&F. For meat lovers, you might complain that vegetables don’t have enough protein.
One vegetable has loaded with protein is winged beans or đậu rồng. You can eat not only the bean, but also its leaves, flowers, and tubes. Raw winged beans and flowers are delicious for salad. The tube tastes like a yuca. OBTW, fresh vegetables like, broccoli, carrot, jicama, spinach, or winged bean are good for your body. Vietnamese people consume many raw herbs and vegetables. Here are some V&F that one should try: calabash, green papaya, rutabaga, fava or winged beans, purple potatoes, dragon fruit, guava, sugarcane, star fruit, and jujube. My favorite is jujube. Jujube tree is very beneficial. Jujube fruit can turn into different processes like making tea or date. Jujube tea helps with relaxation, and it loaded with fiber. Yep! When one is on medications and having fibromyalgia, constipation will be uncontrollable. Other ways to regulate your bowel movements are: eat more fiber V&F, regular exercise, and drink plenty of water or tea. I drink lots of different herbal teas. 3. Consume fewer goody foods
Foods that you should try to avoid are coffee, sodas, cakes, cookies, and chips. I know it will be difficult because I love chips. I could go through the whole bag in an hour, so I try to eat a handful per day. For those who are on a tight budget like myself. Don’t buy food from any countries that have so much pollution or where people don’t have a freedom of expression. If people couldn’t complain when poison is in the food, then it is exported to different countries. What happens to those whose will consume the food? Also, I firmly believe that our air and water affect our food too! Please, pay attention to each label, especially for fish, which I love love to eat.
Remember, change your eating habit, gradually. Oh, I need to mention about acupuncture. I have tried this, and it helps me tremendously. It doesn’t have an immediate impact like medicines. It will take a while, especially when one has fibromyalgia.
