Weekly Template:

Call shifts with your chosen HCFW provider, most commonly Eleanor Friele or Kristen Austen. Shifts are 24 hrs 8 am to 8 am on weekends, and days 8 am to 5 pm or nights 5 pm to 8 am on weekdays. Do all hospital work that they do, rounding, surgical cases, etc. Schedule your clinics to coincide with their time in clinic

Rotation Overview:

Choose one HCFW attending to work with and shadow for the month. Preround, preop, consult, manage labors, see triage patients, provide postop care: essentially the resident does all the hospital responsibilities that your attending does for the month, under their supervision.

Residents have worked with Drs. Friele, Austen, Lowdermilk and Jaucian, most commonly with the first two.

Knowledge:

1. Provide antepartum care for the medically complicated pregnancy.

2. Evaluate patients in triage.

3. Understand indications for labor induction, augmentation, manual rotation, vacuum extraction, and operative cesarean delivery.

4. Manage labor.

5. Understand and recognize postpartum and postoperative complications.

Skills:

1. Consent patients for vaginal delivery, operative delivery, postpartum tubal ligation.

2. Assist the same procedures.

3. Depending on volume and comfort level, perform cesarean section.

4. Evaluate patients preoperatively.

5. Perform versions in triage.

6. Manage postoperative care.

Attitudes:

1. Learn the hospital ‘care style’ of your attending.

2. Practice in the way you think they would.

Behavior:

Professionalism: Represent our residency program to the world of labor and delivery through your responsible patient-centered approach to competent, thorough obstetric care.

Rotation Options:

If your attending of choice will be out of the office for one or more weeks during your rotation, consider choosing an alternate whose schedule matches yours, or work with two attendings for the month. Working with two attendings will allow you more flexibility in your scheduling but will lessen the mentoring relationship that this rotation promotes.
