Installation and Licensing

  1. I downloaded SDScribe, but can not find the program on my computer. Where is it?
    • The installer file is typically saved in your "Downloads" folder. So check there and look for a file in this format "SDScribe_404 full.exe" for the complete installer or and "SDScribe_405r6_updater.exe" for an update installer. [Note the version number may be different depending on when you downloaded the file]
    • The typical procedure is to double click on the .exe and follow the screens. Watch the Installation video below.
  2. How do I enter the license key?
    • We will email you a Licensee and License no. To activate the license: In the installed program, select File / Preferences and click on "License” button and copy and paste exactly as below into the two fields and then press OK button. This is a license key for a single installation. Additional installation licenses can be purchased.
    • TIPS: do not try to enter a leading or trailing blank space. Make sure you are trying to license the correct version of SDScribe™ (e.g., SDScribe™ 2018 and not SDScribe™ 2017). Consult the email that was sent to you to determine the correct version. See 7. below for information on determining version number and downloading other versions.
  3. How do I know what license is activated?
    • Select File / Preferences. You will see your license to the right of the Licensed button. See the middle screen shot below in which the product is licensed for SDScribe™ 2018.

4. What are the hardware requirements for running SDScribe™ ?

    • Minimum of an Intel Core Duo processor, Windows 7 or higher, and 4 GB of RAM. Minimum screen resolution 1280x1024

5. I have installed the trial version on my computer. How do I activate the license?

    • You should have been sent an email with the instructions with the Subject: SDS License. The trial version becomes the full version after you activate the license. So there is no need to re-install the software.
    • To activate the license: In the installed program, select File / Preferences and click on “License” button and copy and paste exactly as below into the two fields and then press OK button. This is a license key for a single installation.
    • Licensee: we provide this in the email
    • License No: we provide this in the email

6. Why doesn't SDScribe install like other programs, in the Program Files folder?

    • SDScribe™ is a database application, which in this case means that it saves your work as records in a file on disk ("SDScribe.4DD"). To keep everything in one place, we keep this file in the same location as other parts of the application, within the "Hazard_Solutions" folder (Hazard_Solutions/Database).
    • The "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)" folders are designed to hold applications, but not the files you create as you work (word processing documents, spreadsheets, etc.). For example, you might have Microsoft Excel installed in the Program Files directory, but you would save your own spreadsheets into some other location, like your "My Documents" folder.
    • If you place your work documents in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder, Windows in some cases will make copies of revisions to the work documents, and place them elsewhere. With SDScribe™, to avoid user confusion, we would need to keep the "SDScribe.4DD" and associated items outside the Program Files folders. So it's easier to keep everything together in the Hazard_Solutions folder, outside of the Program Files folder

7. Can I place the program on a server?

    • If you wish, you can place the entire "Hazard_Solutions" folder on your server. The program is likely to run slowly, however, because the execution of the program itself will take place over you network.
    • Another option is to place just your data on the server. Then the program is still running locally on your workstation, but manipulating data across the network.
    • Your data consists of three files on disk:
    • 1. SDScribe.4DD
    • 2. SDScribe.4DIndy
    • 3. SDScribe.Match
    • Assuming a default installation of SDScribe™ on your workstation, these files should be located inside "C:\Hazard_Solutions\SDScribe\Database".
    • Note that you should not move any other items from this location.
    • You should place these three files in the same place on the server, preferably together in a folder. Then when the program starts up again, if the data is no longer in the "old" location, the program will prompt you to either create a new data file or locate an existing data file. Find the moved data file on the server (you will be looking for "SDScribe.4DD"), and open it.

8. Where do I find updates to SDScribe™ and how do I know my current version number?

    • In some versions of SDScribe, an "Update available" message will appear within 10 seconds of opening the program. If Click on the OK button, the update will start to download into your download folder. To install the update, close the program and click on the downloaded file.
    • You can also check under File/Check for updates
    • You can also go to our update link. Do not install a complete installation with a datafile as it will overwrite your data file.
    • Click on the Help Menu to see your version number (see image below)

9. I just purchased an upgrade. How do I install it?

    • Assuming the upgrade will be installed on the same computer and default location as your prvious version, the first step toward your upgrade is downloading the upgrade from the link provided. http://www.sdscribe.com/existing-customers
    • The update installers will not overwrite your existing work (your data). As a precaution, however, you should always back up your data to a separate location before installing.
    • After installing your Upgrade, to activate the license: In the installed program, select File / Preferences and click on "License” button and copy and paste exactly as provided in the email and then press OK button. This is a license key for a single installation on a computer.
