Ya’at’eeh Parents, Guardians and Students,
The end of the shuttle era is upon America as NASA’s shuttle, Atlantis, flies for the last time. It is the last of all shuttles flights and will launch on July 8th, at 11:26 eastern daylight time, which is about 8:26 Tucson time. What this means for NASA and manned flights into space are yet unknown.
To encourage students to take a moment to watch this historical flight and learn something about the shuttle program, I am assigning this as an extra credit assignment to be turned in the first week of school. Here are three websites to watch this event: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/, http://www.ustream.tv/nasahdtv, http://www.spaceflightnow.com/shuttle/sts135/status.html
This should be a one page report. I would like a description of the launch. What was the purpose of shuttles and did they full fill their expectations? What thoughts or emotions came into play as they watched this rather sad historic event? Consider and write down thoughts on what this might mean to America as the shuttle program comes to a close. What do students foresee for the future of manned flight missions? And should we have them or not, why?
I hope everyone has the opportunity to watch this.
Hagoone,
Mrs. Scotti
