Hiram Schoonover Line b June 15, 1799 NJ

Descendants of Hiram Schoonover

Written by Mike Schoonover

March 25, 2012

Hiram Schoonover was born June 15, 1799 according to his tombstone inscription. The 1850, 1860 and 1870 federal census report that he was born in New Jersey providing an age computing to a year of birth of 1799. To this date, Hiram’s parents have never been proven. Hiram married Mary “Polly” Kilpatrick in Pike County, Ohio on February 2, 1821. This marriage ceremony was officiated in the State of Ohio, Pike County by Justice of the Peace, Jeremiah Sailor. Mary Kilpatrick was a daughter of Brice Kilpatrick and Susanna White. Brice’s family is listed in the 1820 census of Beaver Township, Pike County, Ohio. His family is also found in the 1800 and 1810 censuses of Steuben County, New York. It is believed that Brice and his family moved to Pike County between 1811 and 1813. Brice married Susanna White in Steuben County, New York. She is the daughter of Abel White (Steuben County, New York in 1810, Greenup County, Kentucky in 1820). There is evidence that the Whites descend from William White, Mayflower passenger and his son, Peregrine, who was born aboard ship while she was anchored at Plymouth on December 10, 1620.

Hiram and his growing family are listed in the census of Pike County, Ohio 1830 – 1860. They had 13 children of which 2 died very young.

In 1830 Hiram’s household is in Beaver Township, Pike County, Ohio, next to Reuben Slavens. Also living in Beaver were James Wells age 40-49, possible father of Laura Wells, and Jacob Keller age 60-69, possible father of Jacob Keller. The latter 2 families married children of Hiram & Mary.

There is a Hiram Schoonover also listed as head of household in the 1840 Mercer County, Ohio census in what appears to be a group home of sort. The history of that region at that time might suggest that he traveled there to work on the Grand Lake St. Marys, a feeder lake for the Ohio Canals built at that time.

Hiram is listed in the federal census of Putnam County, Missouri in 1870. He and Mary moved there in the 1860s to be near their children who had relocated to that region. His wife Mary died April 13, 1871 and is buried in Genoa Cemetery in Wayne County, Iowa which is contiguous to Putnam County. Hiram died August 9, 1875 and also is buried in Genoa Cemetery.

I.   Susannah Schoonover was the first child of Hiram and Mary b April 21, 1822. She married Jacob Keller on May 5, 1842 in Pike County at the age of 20. In 1850 they lived in Marion, Pike, Ohio with 2 daughters: Mary Ann age 7 and Julia Ann age 5. Susannah d on August 15, 1859 in Pike County. She was 37. Her husband Jacob was b about 1821 in Ohio and was a farmer. Her 1859 date of death and the 1860 census provide a mystery. This census lists Jacob 39, Ruth 31, Mary Ann 17, Julia 15 and Susan 37. Ohio Marriages indicate that he married Ruth Culp 28 June 1860.

Children of Susannah Schoonover and Jacob Keller were:

1.   Mary Ann b about 1843. She married Jonathan B. Parks about 1865. They are in the 1870 census of Monroe, Wayne, Iowa: Jonathan 29, Mary 27, Matilda 4 and Julia A Keller 25.

2.   Julia Ann b about 1845. She is living with her sister’s family in 1870 – see above

II.    James Schoonover was the first son of Hiram and Mary. He was b August 17, 1823. He married Laura Wells in Scioto County, Ohio (contiguous to Pike County) on February 18, 1844 at the age of 20. He d at Galford in Pike County February 1, 1900. He was 77. Another Schoonover researcher says the year of death was 1899. The 1870 census indicates James was a carpenter. Laura is missing from the 1870 census and is believed to have d before 1870. The 1880 census lists James still living in Union, Pike, Ohio at age 56 but living with Elizabeth H. Schoonover b about 1831 in Virginia and his son Jacob K age 20.

Children of James Schoonover and Laura Wells were:

1.      Almada was b about 1845. She married George Brigner and later moved to Hamilton, Nebraska about 1871

2.      Isaac W. b about 1847 (first grandson of Hiram & Mary) married Mary about 1870

3.      Laura b about 1849

4.      Joseph b about 1851

5.      Sarah Ann b about 1852

6.      William Hiram b 4-27-1854 d 6-2-1945

7.      Eliza E. b about 1856

8.      Jacob Keller b about 1860 (twin)

9.      John b about 1860 (twin) – does not appear in the 1870 census and would have been age 10.

III.  Jeremiah Schoonover was b April 1, 1825 and d 22 days after birth. I wonder if this child was named in honor of Jeremiah Sailor, who officiated the marriage of Hiram and Mary.

IV.  Mary Ann Schoonover was b April 27, 1827 Conflicting information was found for her year of birth. My mom, Dolores Schoonover, who preceded my research recorded 1829 and accordingly listed Julia Ann before Mary Ann. Another researcher, Karen Bennett says that she was b April 27, 1827. Census information provides computed years of birth of either 1826 or 1827. I believe another clue is that the daughters of their sister, Susannah, were Mary Ann and Julia Ann, in that order. So, I believe that Mary Ann was the fourth child of Hiram and Mary. Mary Ann married Andrew Nye in Pike County, Ohio on November 1, 1846. Andrew was previously married to Eliza Jane Shoemaker by who they had 3 children: Sarah, Margaret and Eliza. The 1850 census of Seal, Pike, Ohio listed the combined children with Andrew and Mary Ann. In 1860, they are living in Monroe, Wayne, Iowa. This is significant in that they were th first family members to leave Pike, Ohio for Iowa. At the time of the census, they were living near a Bumgarner from Ohio with a 2 year old b in Iowa along with Ohioans Brooks, Zimmerman and Marsh. A 4 year old Marsh was b in Ohio. In 1870, they are still in Monroe, Wayne, Iowa living next to Jacob Nye 22 and Mary 18 who was b in Virginia. In 1880 and 1885, they are still Monroe Township. Andrew d December 28, 1892. He is buried at Genoa Cemetery, Monroe, Wayne, Iowa (same cemetery as Hiram and Mary). Mary Ann d February 17, 1905 in Pleasanton, Decatur County, Iowa.

Children of Andrew Nye and Mary Ann were:

       1  Hannah F. Nye 1848-

   2  Jacob H. Nye 1849-

   3. Elisha P. Nye 1851-

V. Julia Ann Schoonover was b April 20, 1828. She married Fernando Cortes Searl on March 21, 1844 at the age of almost 16. She d August 1, 1876 at the age of 48. Julia is buried at Portsmouth, Ohio’s Greenlawn Cemetery. Fernando remarried in 1878 to Caroline Shoemaker. There is a lot written about Fernando.

Children of Fernando Searl and Julia were:

            1.  Minta Eurydice Searl 1844-1923

            2.  Geneva Helen Searl b 1845

            3.  Orpheus Alphonso (OA) Searl 1848-1914

            4.  Mary R. Searl 1849-

            5.  Belle Searl1860-

            6.  Fernando Dugan Searl 1865-1866

V.  Subrinah Schoonover was b March 12, 1832 (confirmed by grave marker). She married John W. McNally on October 7, 1855 in Pike County, Ohio. They moved to Logan County, Oklahoma. She d January 13, 1904 on their farm there and is buried at Victor Cemetery, Logan County, Oklahoma.

Children of John McNally and Subrinah were:

            1.  Hiram S. McNally 1856-

            2.  Thomas McNally 1858-

            3.  Susanna McNally 1859-

            4.  Rebecca L. McNally 1862-1931

            5.  Mary Minnie McNally  1863-1906

            6.  Cora Helen McNally 1868-1961

            7.  Pilitha Arvilla McNally 1871-

            8.  Clara Agnes McNally  1872-1961

            9.  Alice Huetta McNally  1877-1899

           10. Walter A. McNally  1879-1908

VI.  Joseph John Schoonover was b February 14, 1835. He married Nancy Emily Street January 17, 1856 in Pike County, Ohio. Emily was b January 25, 1837 to Castleman and Margaret Moore Street. JJ and Nancy first lived with Hiram and Mary as they are included with them in the 1860 census with Alice, 3, and Cass, 1. The 1870 and 1880 censuses show them in Scioto Township, Pike County, Ohio. The census records for 1890 were lost and the census for 1900 show they are residing in Rosehill Township, Logan County, Oklahoma. The 1910 census is interesting. They reside in Oak View, Logan, Oklahoma. This census record clearly says John Schoonover, age 75, a retired farmer with Nancy E, age 73. This is the first evidence that I have found that would suggest his middle name was John. All previous records state “Joseph J.” Nancy d first on April 2, 1916. She is buried at Oak View Cemetery. Joseph at the age of 84 is found living in 1920 in the household of Ohio Miller which includes Maggie Miller, age 45 and Georgia Miller, age 8. Maggie might be Joseph’s daughter but she would have been 50 at that time. Joseph J. d near Guthrie, Logan County, Oklahoma on February 12, 1924. Joseph’s burial near Nancy has not been confirmed.

Children of Joseph and Nancy all b in Pike County, Ohio were

1.  Maude Alice  Schoonover b December 30, 1856. Alice married Walker Toops about 1876.

            2.  Cass Schoonover was b December 3, 1859 in Pike County, Ohio. His given name may have been Casibyinka, Cassbanka, Casibianka, Casibianca or Casabianca. This unusual name may have been derived from his maternal grandfather’s name Caselman or Castleman Street. The 1910-1930 census’ give his name as Cass. His death certificate shows Cass. The census records are difficult to read but clearly suggests a name longer than Cass. He and his household resided on a farm along Burggraf Road (referred to as Crow Hollow) in Rush township, Scioto county, Ohio at least from 1900 to his death there on May 1, 1935. Note that his tombstone gives a year of birth of 1859 but his death certificate says his birth date was December 3, 1858. He was buried on May 3, 1935, next to his wife at Lucasville Cemetery, Scioto County, Ohio. He married Sarah Amanda Miller on Christmas Day 1883. Sarah was born February 6, 1863 in Pike County, Ohio and died January 22, 1932. Her parents were Robert and Sarah (Dunham) Miller.

Children of Cass and Sarah were:

1.      Sarah Emma Schoonover was born November 11, 1883 in Pike County, Ohio. Emma married 3 times. She first married Frank Henry on January 10, 1903. They divorced December 1913. She married Harvey Culp. She married Cliff Zuefle. Frank Henry was the son of John and Pauline Henry who resided next to the family of Cass Schoonover in Rush township, Scioto county, Ohio. In 1910, Frank (born in Ohio in 1882) and Emma lived in Morgan Township, Scioto County, Ohio. They list 2 children as Fay, age 4, and Erma, age 11 months. Somewhat interesting is that a Nellie Henry is living next door with her grandparents, Cass & Amanda Schoonover. In 1920 the household of Harvey, age 43, and Emma Culp, age 36, is located in Washington Township, Scioto County, Ohio. The listed children seem to have been mixed up: Thelma Culp 15, Faye Culp 13, Clayton Culp 12, Erma Culp 11, Thelma Henry 9, Robert Henry 6, Ruth Henry 3 and Madge Henry 1. In 1930 the household consisted of Harvey, Emma, Ruth 13, Madge 11, Richard 9 and William 5, all last named Culp still living in Washington, Scioto, Ohio. Clifford Zuefle was living with his wife, Rosie, at 1710 Jackson Avenue, Portsmouth, Ohio in 1930. He was proprietor of a plumbing shop. His wife was the bookkeeper.

2.      Joseph Robert Schoonover (referred to as JR by most, Pop by his children and Rob by his spouse), was born 13 September 1885 in Pike County, Ohio. He married Margaret Pauline Schackart 10 January 1909, daughter of William and Margaret Delhotal Schackart. Margaret was born 21 January 1890 at Pond Creek, Scioto County, Ohio. JR died 21 August 1965 from complications following an accident whereby he was hit by a car driven by his son, Joseph Paul, in the driveway of his home on Waller Street. Margaret passed away residing in a skilled nursing home on 10 April 1984. They are both buried next to each other at Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio. As a young man, JR taught school. But by 1920 he became a grocer at 1202 Ninth Street in Portsmouth, a profession he maintained throughout his life. In 1910 JR age 24, Margaret age 20 and Margaret’s sister Elizabeth (Lizzy) age 28 lived between the households of his father, Cass, and John Henry. JR’s residence was occupied by an Irish family, farmer, Michel, age 71, & Bridget Hecker in 1990. The census indicated that Michel and Bridget were married 40 years. In this 1910 census, JR states his occupation to be a school teacher while his sister-in-law states she was a servant. I remember she had a dry sense of humor. In 1920 JR lists his address as 1204 Ninth Street which must have been next door to Schoonover’s Market. He lists his occupation as a grocery store employer. By 1930 the family moved to 1526 Sixth Street. The census record listed 4 children: Genevieve age 19, Dorothy age 16, Joseph age 9 and William age 1. The family later moved to the “hilltop area” on Waller Street. It has been said that JR owned one of the first automobiles in Portsmouth.

3.      Margaret Grace Schoonover was born 3 March 1889 in Pike County, Ohio. Grace is listed in the 1910 census living with her parents. She is 22. She married Lawrence Carter in about 1919. The 1920 census Portsmouth Ward 2, Scioto, Ohio listed Lawrence Carter, born in Ohio, age 20, Grace Carter, wife, age 25, and Nellie Henry, niece, age 15. In 1930, they rented at 3923 Rhodes Avenue, Village of New Boston, Clay Township, Scioto County, Ohio. Lawrence is a machinist, age 31, and Grace M. is a teacher, age 38. They have 2 children: Marjory is 7 and Donald is 6. They state that they were married when Lawrence was 20 and Grace was 27.

3.  Rosa B. Schoonover b 1861

4.  Hiram Wesley Schoonover b 1865

5.  Rebecca Ellen Schoonover b 1867

            6.  Margaret J.Schoonover b 1870

            7.  Joseph J. Schoonover b August 5, 1871

            8.  William Schoonover b in October 1874

            9.  Charles W. (Charly) Schoonover b November 1880

VII.  Lydia Catherine Schoonover was b September 18, 1837. She married John Wymer on June 18, 1860 in Pike County. Information supplied on the 1915 census record of Monroe, Wayne, Iowa states that the family had lived in Iowa for 49 years which computes to a commencement year of 1866. This record also tells us that they were members of the United Brethren Church. Lydia d likely at home on February 11, 1928 in Wayne County, Iowa. It is believed that she is buried at Genoa Cemetery. The History of Wayne County, Iowa (1886) provides a biographical sketch of John. It says he was “a farmer and stock raiser who was a native of Muskingum County, Ohio, b April 22, 1837, the second of six children of Joseph and Rachel (Robinson) Wymer, natives of Virginia. When twenty years of age he left the home roof and went to Scioto County and two years later to Pike County, where he lived four years, in the meantime learning and working at the shoemaker’s trade. In April, 1864, he came to Iowa and located in Wayne County, on the farm where he now lives.”

Children of Lydia and John Wymer were:

            1.  Mary Ellen Wymer b 1861

            2.  Absalom E. (AE) Schoonover  b 1863

            3.  Elizabeth Emma Schoonover b 1864

            4.  John R. Schoonover b 1866

            5.  Rachel Alice Schoonover b 1868

            6.  Hiram A. Schoonover b 1871

            7.  William B. Schoonover b 1874

VIII.  John Schoonover was b June 3, 1839. He married Nancy Pettit in Scioto County on June 7, 1856. They are listed in the 1860 census of Jefferson, Scioto, Ohio. John is 22. Nancy is 24. Mary was 2. They are living next to John 20 and Margaret 16 Petit. John has a Civil War file in the US National Archives. John and Nancy likely moved with the Schoonover families to Missouri about 1866. John deserted Nancy before 1870 and headed to Nebraska. The 1880 census of Bow Creek, Rooks, Kansas shows John’s new family of Mary b 1847 in Pennsylvania, Nettie age 9 b in Nebraska, Lilly May age 6, Rosa B age 4, Josephine age 2, and Larvery (male) age 1. The last 4 all b in Kansas. A later state census shows Minnie A. b in 1882. Also, the 1880 census of Douglas, Butler, Kansas shows Nancy (marital status of “widowed”) living with Margaret J. age 14 b in Missouri and John A. age 10 b in Iowa. John and Mary divorced before 1895. John was living with Harriett Hall at the time of his death, June 4, 1895 in Burtonsville, Lewis County, Kentucky. He d of skin poisoning from a self inflicted wound while loading gun shells 10 days before his death. There are 3 letters written by Harriett to Nancy in John’s Civil War file.

Children of John and Nancy were:

            1.  Mary  Schoonover b 1858

            2.  Margaret J. Schoonover b 1866

            3.  John A. Schoonover b 1870

Children of John and Mary were:

            1.  Nettie Schoonover  1871

            2.  Lilly May Schoonover b 1874

            3.  Rosa B. Schoonover b 1876

            4.  Josephine Schoonover b 1878

            5.  Larvery  Schoonover b 1879

            6.  Minnie A. Schoonover b 1882

IX.  Martha Schoonover was b April 22, 1840. She may have married David Washington Pierce, a carpenter, in Jackson County, Ohio on June 5, 1862. David was b in Virginia on May 23, 1835 to Jacob and Mary (Hawkins) Pierce. Martha d at the age of 42 from measles on December 30, 1882.

Children of Martha and David were:

            1.  Mary E. Pierce b 1865

            2.  Jacob M. Pierce b 1868

            3.  Hiram W. Pierce  b 1872

            4.  Christina A.Pierce b 1879

X.  Hiram Wesley (Hiram, Jr.) Schoonover was b February 10, 1843. He married Anne E. Crawford (Crafford) on July 1, 1866 in Putnam County, Missouri. Hiram served the Union Army during the Civil War. His enlistment date was December 9, 1861. His rank was private and he was mustered out January 2, 1865 in Columbus, Ohio. The 1870 census of Chariton, Lucas, Iowa indicates he was a blacksmith but that he was 31 (should have been 27) with Anne 21 b in Ohio, Mary 3 b in Mississippi (I believe this is an error and should have read Missouri) and Wimly (Minta M) age 1 b in Iowa. By 1880 the family had moved to Farmington, Fulton, Illinois. Hiram W. is listed as a laborer who has been unemployed for 6 months and claims to have been “maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled.” The census record indicates he is 40. The record says his father was b in New Jersey and his mother in Ohio. Annie E. is 30 and states her father was b in Pennsylvania and her mother in Ohio. Mary E. 13 was b in Missouri, Mintie M. 11 b in Iowa and Fernando C. 8 b in Illinois. Hiram d July 24, 1888 in Farmington. The 1900 census of Farmington, Fulton, Illinois lists Anna E. age 49 b in Ohio widowed whose father was b in Pennsylvania and mother in New Jersey (inconsistent with prior records). She states that she had 3 children (all living). She is a dressmaker and is living with Minta M age 30. The 1910 census shows that she lived on West Street, Farmington Ward 1, Fulton, Illinois. Her home was owned free and clear. Again she says her parents were b in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The occupation of both mother and daughter was seamstress. The 1920 census shows that Anne was not employed but that Minta was working in an office as a bookkeeper. Anne d October 18, 1928. In 1830 Minta is living probably in the same home of her mother at 136 West Street, Farmington, Illinois. Olive Burget 46, a teacher, is living with her. Minta is a librarian at the public library. Additional information about her life was published after her death. “Miss Minta Schoonover, (1869-1975 ) 106-year-old Farmington (IL) resident and retired librarian, d at 9:20 p.m. Wed May 14, (1975) at Claytona Manor Nursing Home, Lewistown. Miss Schoonover, said to have been the oldest librarian in the country, was appointed in 1917 to her post at Farmington's Andrew Carnegie Library which was built in 1907. She retired May of 1967 at the age of 98 after 50 years of service.”

Children of Hiram and Anne were

            1.  Mary E. Schoonover b 1867

            2.  Minta M. Schoonover b 1869  d 1975

            3.  Fernando C. Schoonover b 1872 He may have been a member of the crew of the American Steamship “Easterner” on August 20, 1921 in New York.

XI. Elizabeth Schoonover The first Elizabeth was b February 10, 1847. She lived only 1 year, 1 month and 25 days. Another researcher believes that she was a twin of Hiram Jr. and accordingly b in 1843.

XII. Elizabeth Schoonover was b September 7, 1849. She married William C. Adams in Putnam County, Missouri on January 20, 1867. William was a private in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted March 14, 1864 and mustered out July 12, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. The 1870 census of Monroe, Wayne, Iowa lists William 24, Elizabeth, 21 and Mary E. 10 months. In 1880 the family remains in Monroe, Wayne, Iowa. Children include Mary 10, Louise 9, Margaret 5 and David W. 4 months. William indicates both of his parents were b in Ohio while Elizabeth’s parents were New Jersey and New York. There is a biographical sketch of William in the published “Biographical and historical record of Wayne and Appanoose Counties, Iowa.” Inter-state Publishing, 1886 that reads as follows: “William C. Adams, owner and proprietor of the Allerton House, of Allerton, is a native of Ohio, b in Scioto County in the year 1845. He was reared to manhood in his native state, and there lost his parents in early life. March 4 1864,he, at the age of nineteen, enlisted in the Thirty-third Ohio Infantry, serving till the close of the war. He participated in the battle of Resaca, and in the engagements of the Atlantic campaign, in the memorable march with Sherman to the sea, and at the final grand review at Washington. He then returned to Ohio, and in 1866 came to Wayne County, Iowa, settling in Monroe Township, where he bought a farm, and was engaged in farming and stock-raising there for eighteen years. For his wife he married Miss Elizabeth Schoonover, a native of Pike County, Ohio. This union has been blessed with three daughters and one son-Eva, Lula, Maggie and David W. In 1884 Mr. Adams leased his farm in Monroe Township, and removed to Allerton so that his children might have the benefit of the excellent schools at this place, and in the fall of 1885 he purchased his present hotel. Mr. Adams was one of the successful and enterprising farmers of Monroe Township, while his genial and accommodating manners make him a popular landlord and citizen.” In 1900 William and Elizabeth are at a house at 555 Flournay, Chicago Ward 12, Cook County, Illinois. William is a street car conductor. Elizabeth says she is the mother of six but five are living. Children in the household are David, age 20, a dental student, and Marie age 11. In 1910 and 1920 they are living in Chicago Ward 13. In 1919 the household includes Marie A 21, Elmer E. Prugh 47 a son-in-law, and Elmer A. Prugh 19 a grandson. 1920 lists William 74 railroad conductor, Elizabeth 71 and David E. 12 grandson and they are living next to David W. Adams, dentist. Illinois death records indicate that William C. Adams d December 10, 1926 in Chicago and that he was buried 3 days later at Oakridge Cemetery. He was 81 b August 25, 1845 in Ohio. He lived at 3930 Congress Street, Chicago, Illinois. His father was John Adams and his mother was Evelyn Shonkwiler. Elizabeth d about 13 years later on June 17, 1940 in Chicago at the age of 91. The death record states that she is also buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Proviso, Cook, Illinois. This record states that her birth date was September 7, 1848 conflicting with our family record of 1849. The record further confirms she is the daughter of Hiram Schoonover and Mary White. The obituary of William C. Adams read: Adams-William C. Adams, aged 81 years, beloved husband of Elizabeth, fond father of the late Mrs. Mary Evelyn Prugh, Mrs. W. D. James, Marguerite Rhoades, Dr. D. W. Adams and Mrs. Leo J. Fisher. Member of George H. Thomas post, G. A. R., No. 5. Funeral services from his late residence, 3930 W. Congress St., Monday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m.: interment Oakridge cemetery.

Children of William and Elizabeth were:

            1.  Mary E. Adams b 1869 d1904

            2.  Louise Frances Adams b 1872 d1937

            3.  David William Adams b 1880 d1941

            4.  Margaret O. Adams b1875 d1959

            5.  Abbie Marie Adams b 1888 d1972

            6.  Unknown child – remembering that Elizabeth said she had six children with five living at the time of the 1900 census.

His fine farm of 200 acres is adorned with an attractive and commodious house, and the large mill and cotton-gin which he operates deserve special attention. He is a native of Honesdale. Penn., and is a son of Daniel and Eliza (Jacks) Schoonover, both of whom are also natives of the Keystone State. Jacob Schoonover went to California when twenty-one years of age, or in 1852, by way of the Isthmus, and remained there until September, 1856, engaged in mining and teaming. He then returned to his native State, remained there about a year, and then in 1857 went to Minnesota, where he spent another year. In 1858 he came to Arkansas, settled in Marion County, and engaged in photographing, which he continued for three years, traveling in the meantime over Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. He happened to be in Randolph County when the war broke out, and in 1862 he enlisted in Shaver's regiment, Tappin's brigade, and served until June, 1865, in the Confederate army. He was regimental quartermaster. After the close of the [p.427] conflict he returned to Randolph County, remained a few months, and then proceeded to the State of his nativity, where he sojourned six months, visiting his parents. Subsequently he returned to this county, and engaged as salesman in the store of Green R. Jones, remaining thus employed for two years. He then bought a partnership, and this continued until 1873. Three years later he was elected circuit clerk of Randolph County, and filled this position in a very acceptable manner for six years. After this he was engaged in farming and trading. He was first married in 1870 to Miss Martha J. Wear, a native of Pennsylvania, who bore him the following named children: Eugene G., now in Pennsylvania; Herbert, Addie C. and Parke T. The mother of these children died on the 22d of December, 1878, and Mr. Schoonover was married the second time, on the 5th of January, 1882, to Miss Ella Bolen, a native of the Blue Grass State. Two children are the fruit of this union: Robert and Jacob. Mr. Schoonover is a Royal Arch Mason, and a member of the K. of H. He has ever taken an active part in politics and public affairs, and has done much to build up every enterprise for the common good.

Jay Schoonover 9-25-2018:  This has Ferman Schoonover's ancestry incorrect.  The 1900 census for Wayne County, PA shows Ferman as the son of George and Annie Schoonover.  The death certificate for this George Schoonover gives his parents as Daniel Schoonover and Ellenor Spangenberg.  It appears that this Daniel Schoonover was No. 1027.04 above - the son of Levi Schoonover, son of William Schoonover and Susannah Spangenberg.

Ferman Schoonover was the father of the actress Gloria Jean Schoonover (see the Famous Schoonovers section).
