Early in the Civil War Sumner Ward went to California by way of the isthmus of Panama (probably to avoid being conscripted into the Union Army). It was probably his report of California that initiated the more of the entire family to California in 1864. He was born Dec 25, 1836 in Dover Piscataquis County, Maine, and died July 9, 1908 in Farm Ridge, Illinois.
790.8 vi. Freelove Lucy Schoonover, b.Dec 29,1842 Vermillion Township, La Salle, Illinois; d. May 21, 1886, Ferndale, Humboldt County, California; m. Mar 24,1862 WILLIAM BATTERSON. She was supposed to have been given this strange name at the request of a family friend named Freelove, who was visiting at the time of her birth. In return she was to receive a legacy on the death of the friend. Whether she ever received anything is not known, but she hated the name of Freelove and went by the name of Lucy F. Schoonover. Her husband was a school teacher and was born in Stockbridge, Mass. he served in the Civil War, and after his discharge he and Lucy followed the family west. William homesteaded land in Oregon in the 1870's, but Lucy did not like it there and returned to her parents in Eureka, California, where she died in 1886. Children (BATTERSON): Orson, d. of typhoid at the age of 14; Elphinia; Merritt.
790.9 vii. Peter Taylor Schoonover, b.Dec 20,1846 Vermillion Township, La Salle, Illinois; d. Nov 7, 1898, Chehalis, LewisCo, WA; m. Nov 9,1863 MARY JANE ARMSTRONG. Peter was the eldest surviving son. He and his wife followed the family west in 1870. Mary Jane and Peter were divorced in a somewhat lurid trial in 1872. Mary Jane remarried immediately to James W. Landergren. Her grandchildren by her son Rolland use the Landergren name today and were only dimly aware of their Schoonover heritage. Peter is thought to have remarried and moved to Montana. Children: Verner, Vernilla, Rolland, Eleanor. The two eldest were drowned in a river crossing, either on the trip or just after their arrival in California.
791 viii. Orson (2) Schoonover, b.Mar 10, 1844 Vermillion Township, La Salle, Illinois; d. the same day.
791.1 ix Rachel Lydia Schoonover, b.Oct 5,1849 Vermillion Township, La Salle, Illinois; d. Oct 28,1868; bur. Ferndale Cem., Ferndale, Humbolt Co., Calif.; m. May 15,1865 CHARLES HARMON HENRY BURGER. The location of her marriage is not known. It seems Harmon was very opposed to having children and believed (according to testimony in the divorce suit of his second wife, niece of Rachel) that a woman was ruined after the birth of a child. According to tradition passed down in the family, Rosina (Rachel's sister) came to visit Rachel one evening at the house of her parents where she was ill in bed. Harmon had just preceded Rosina in visiting his wife. There was a glass on the bedside table and Rachel told Rosina not to touch it as it contained poison. It would appear that Harmon was giving poison of some type to Rachel with her knowledge, having possibly persuaded her that she was not worthy to live. It is also possible that she was again pregnant which he could not accept. After Rachel died Harmon married her 13-year-old niece, Rosina Ward, daughter of Flora, on Oct 2,1870. Daughter: Vivia Burger, b. Oregon 1866, raised by her maternal grandparents.
791.2 x. Mary Cynthia Schoonover, b.Mar 19,1852 Vermillion Township, La Salle, Illinois; d. June 4, 1932; m. July 31, 1867 WILLIAM HENRY HARKER. Mary was the most beautiful of the Schoonover girls and was apparently a dancer and actress. Little is known of her life, as her only child, Pearl, died as a young girl and there is no descendant to record her life story. She was only 15 when she married and apparently was divorced from him. She may have had a second husband named PALMER as this appears to be her name at the time of her marriage to CHARLES TAYLOR in August 1880. It's possible that Palmer was her stage name. In her later years she lived in Oregon near the family of her brother Alpha, and died there in 1932. Daughter: Pearl Harker, d. as a young girl.
791.3 xi. Susan Rosina Schoonover born April 29, 1854 in Vermillion, LaSalle County, IL; died Mar 12, 1951 in Medford, Jackson CO, Oregon.bur. Woodville Cem., City of Rogue River, Oregon She married (1) Charles Noah Plowman April 26, 1868.(2) Thomas Henry Bedford Feb 15, 1892, in Red Bluff, Tehama Co, CA. He was b Sept 23, 1848, Tehama Co CA, son of Thomas Bedford He was b Sept 1848 in Green Co MO and d Jan 9, 1910 in Grants Pass, Josephine CO OR. (3) William Henry Coope April 18, 1907 (4) Walter Willard Heflin July 24, 1927 Rosina was the most delicate of the children and was thought by the family doctor in Illinois as the least likely to survive the trip. However, she lived to be the oldest of all the Schoonover children, dying at the ripe old age of 97. Rosina's second marriage was arranged by the family. She didn't much care for Thomas Henry Bedford, but she had all her children by him and in between marriages she went by "Bedford." She is buried as Rosina Bedford with her husband and many of her children.
791.4 xii Cora ANNE SCHOONOVER, b. Feb 26,1858 Vermillion Township, La Salle, Illinois; d. Nov 11,1921 San Pedreo, Los Angeles County, California; m. July 2, 1876 CAPT. ALEXANDER H. Smith. He was born 30 Nov 1852 in Aberdeen, Scotland, and died Mar 25,1924 in San Pedreo, Los Angeles County, California.Cora, perhaps by virtue of being the youngest daughter, escaped an arranged early marriage and chose her own husband, a seafaring man from Aberdeen, Scotland. he became a captain and for 35 years piloted the ship between San Pedro and Catalina Island for the Wrigley family.
791.5 xiii. Alpha Button Schoonover b Feb 13,1861 Vermillion Township, La Salle, Illinois; d. Feb 6, 1930, Cornelius, Washington County, Oregon.; m. Sept 7,1884 LUCRETIA LOVEWELL. Alpha was the youngest child and second surviving son, and apparently the favorite of his mother. The three youngest girls did not like him, as he constantly blamed them for his misdeeds and his mother always believed him. As his initials were "A.S." his sisters suggested that he be given the middle initial of "S" which would then make his initials "A.S.S." which is what they thought of him. Alpha was the principal in the "Pig Trial" being charged with grand larceny. His father posted $1,000 bail for his release.

Obituary from "Grandma Taylor's Book" (Brad Chissom aschissom@comcast.net)
DIED near Pueblo, Colorado, December 23rd, 1887, of paralysis, James Schoonover, aged 89 years.
The deceased was the father of H. R. Schoonover, of Mercer, County, and had only a few weeks before his death, in company with his aged wife, went to Colorado to visit a daughter. He had been in more than usual good health until a day or two before his death when he was suddenly stricken with paralysis and after lapsing into unconsciousness gradually and quietly passed away like a child sinking into a peaceful sleep. He was born near New Albany, Pennsylvania, January 14, 1799, and moved to Southern Indiana at the age of 24, where at the age of 35 he was married to Miss Hannah C. Bates, who still survives him. With his wife and family he emigrated to Mercer County, Missouri, in 1856, and settling on land near Sommersett, remained there until the year of his death. He became a member of the Christian Church in the years of his early manhood and throughout his long life was a sober, temperate, Christian man, respected and esteemed by all who knew him -- Lineville Tribune.

466.1. Jacob Lansing Schoonover (Jacobus, Jacobus, Geurt, Jacobus, Geurt, Hendrick) b Sept. 12, 1807 From History of Rensselaer Co., New York by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester, published in 1880: "He received a good education while in early life, and for one year after he became sixteen was a student at Union College. Desiring to lead a business instead of a professional life, he left college; was for five years a clerk in wholesale drygoods houses in Albany and Troy. In the latter place he was with H. & G. Vail, - the first house of the kind established in the latter city. Soon after reaching his majority he became a partner, under the firm name of George Vail & Co. After a few years Mr. Vail retired from the business, and Mr. Van Schoonhoven, with Ebenezer Proudfit, continued the wholesale drygoods trade of Troy, and were leading merchants in this part of the State. Mr. Van Schoonhoven was principal among the organizers of the Central Bank of Troy in 1853. He was president of the same for twenty years, and still remains a director. He was director and largest stockholder of the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad for many years, and is president of the Linen Thread Company of Mechanicville, Saratoga Co., N. Y. He has always been a supporter of the educational and religious institutions of the city; was for many years connected with the Young Men's Association of Troy, and for one year was its president. He was one of a few who built the Second Street Presbyterian church edifice, and has been for many years an elder of that church. Mr. Van Schoonhoven is a man of sound judgment, of broad and liberal views. He has always avoided the bickerings of politics and refused to accept office, although he has been interested in all questions of local or national import affecting in any way the rights of the people. He was formerly identified with the Whig party; he was a supporter of the Union during the Rebellion, and has since supported the Republican platform. Mr. Van Schoonhoven has been married three times. His first wife, Harriet M. Event [Yvonnet], was of French extraction, and died Aug. 1, 1842. His second wife, Mary Jane Haight, died Feb. 19, 1858. For his third wife he married Elizabeth Huntington, daughter of Dr. John Chester, who was among the early presidents of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy." Muscatine county IA – Register of Old Settlers Book One - CENTER GROVE, Fulton Twp., Aug. 5th, 1880.
The following notice of James Schoonover, who departed this life in Fulton township, on the 3d, inst., has been handed us for publication:Mr. Schoonover was born in Randolph county, Va., September 17, 1806. Was in good health and bid fair to live to the good age of his father, who was 104 years at his death. December 26, 1829, deceased married Elizabeth Teeter, and in the spring of 1839 left Virginia for Iowa with his wife and five children, floated down the Kanawha river in a canoe with his family and goods to Parkersburg, took steamboat, unloaded his canoe five times on the way, jumping mill dams as he came to them and exposing himself as no one would dare do to-day. Landed at Rock Island May 15th, 1839; settled on Black Hawk creek, Scott county, where he lived four years; buried his wife while there, April 21st, 1840. Of the hardships the early settler endured we know but little. Having a family of five motherless children to care for, and suffering for months with chills and fever, deranged from those terrible headaches, so that he even lost his reckoning and found himself lost to the day of the week; falling through a temporary bridge over the Black Hawk he broke three ribs. These are some of the trails he had to endure. For his second wife he married Thankful Randall, at Center Grove, and whose wife was killed by the falling house by that tornado that passed through the Grove June 4th 1844. In 1843, Mr. S. settled in Fulton township, or what was then included in Montpelier township, Muscatine county. He had four children by the present wife, only one living Benjamin, who is now on the old homestead, which is a fine, well improved farm of over two hundred acres. The first house he built at the Grove was the one in which the first school in the township was taught, and was used for meetings. It stands to-day shingled by his hands and doing good service. The lumber of which it was made he rafted from Wisconsin pineries. He was interesting in conversation, particularly so in relating incidents that occurred during his frontier life. He was not much of a hunter, yet his wife says one morning before breakfast he killed two deer and one wolf. He gave but little attention to politics, yet the old records of 1845 show that he was then acting as Justice of the Peace in Montpelier township. He was liberal, particularly with his church, where, aside from his family, he will be sadly missed. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. C. Haskell, in the Center Grove M. E. Church, of which denomination deceased has been a member for the past 56 years. Having given his heart to God at seventeen years of age. In the death of Father Schoonover the wife has lost an effectionate husband, the children a kind an loving father, the church a faithful co-worker and Christian, the community a good citizen.

In 1843, Daniel traded a horse for 1400 acres of land in Clay Co. at Yankee Dam. They settled on Beechy Ridge. Listed at the court house as Schoonover reservation. Daniel served in the Union During the Civil War. " YANKEE DAM - In 1836 or 1837 a dam was constructed in Elk River not far from the mouth of Blue Knob Creek. A mill and factory were built for the purpose of manufacturing handles, shoe lasts and buttons. The mill was a failure. Most of the buildings burned down and the place ever after was known as Yankee Dam because the men who built it were known as Yankees. A few years later Daniel Schoonover rebuilt the water mill which was used this time only for grinding corn, wheat and making feed. This mill was carried away in the flood of 1861. The mill was then rebuilt by Hiram Lewis and used as a grist mill until modern mills rendered it unprofitable."
