Bell, was born in Niagara County, N.Y. on Nov. 27, 1826. In 1856, I (Uriah) left Ohio and migrated to Texas, and where in pursuance of my education and business program, I entered the field as a practicing physician and there on January 26, 1860, I was married to Miss Mary Catherine Sickenberger of German-Irish descent. for the term of a few years in my early business life, I served as teacher of vocal music and violin. This business of teaching caused me to change my place of business frequently. Consequently, I was a large part of my time amount strangers and cultivating fresh acquaintances. This caused my Dutch name of Schoonover to be an intolerable stumbling blocka name no stranger could spell correctly and but few could remember to pronounce correctly. Hence, because of my frequent embarrassments, early in the (eighteen) fifties, I had the legislature of Louisiana change my name from Uriah Schoonover to Charles Milo Bell. After Mattie died in Pleasanton, Iowa, it's likely that he left his two sons with his mother and moved West. He next appears in Wahpeton, ND where he mustered in April 28,1898 as a Private in the 1st Regiment ND Infantry Volunteers, Company I. He sailed from San Francisco to the Phillippines to join in the Spanish American War. His Company did see action and was situated near Singalong, near Manila. William was an engineer when he joined but no evidence found yet as to what his duties were. He was brought up on charges three times for what roughly amounted to highjinks and disobeying orders. He was mustered out Sept 25, 1899 in San Francisco. He make his way to the state of Washington. Held a 1923 US Patent (No.1449554) for a "Piston Position Indicator for Engines." Lived near Spokane and Lind, WA circa 1922. Worked as a mechanic. Seems not to have remarried. Died alone, from the little info on his death certificate. From his will, he was broke when he died. Heart disease and Brights kidney disease. Buried Ritzville Cemetery, Ritzville, WA.
