Henry married (1) Amanda Haymond McHenry on September 18, 1850 in Gilmer County, VA/WV. Amanda Haymond was born ca. 1820 and had been first married to Isaac McHenry on August 4, 1840 in Braxton County, VA/WV. They had at least four children. Isaac McHenry died on March 30, 1849. Amanda died on May 13, 1876 in Indian Territory, OK and was buried at Greenhill Cemetery in Muskogee County, OK.
Henry married (2) Annie Muskrat on January 27, 1878 in Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, OK. Annie died before 1900.
Note by Judi Schoonover: Henry lived north of the rock house. Henry came from West Virginia. He had shot a man and was running from the law. In those days if you got to Oklahoma or Indian Territory you were a free man. Ran 1400 head of horses plus cattle and hogs. He cured and sold meat. He tied all of the allotments of Annie Muskrat and her family together. It was also a stage stop from Ft. Smith to Muskogee. He was one of Judge Parker's regular jury men. He built a large, white 2 story house and lean-to. Fire places at each end also heated the upstairs. Henry and Annie were buried on the place. Home was on Dirty Creek and was an early day coach stop. Annie was a full blooded Cherokee Indian who came to Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, 1853-1860. She came to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears over the southern trail from Georgia through Webbers Falls and settled 1/2 mile south of Muskogee near Keefton. She was a young girl at the time. Remembered the trip on the Trail of Tears. They hid their gold on the way and never went back for it. They were afraid of being robbed. Burial: Schoonover Cemetery, Keefton, OK.
Jay Schoonover 10 March 2022: Henry and wife Amanda and their children were in McDonald County, MO at the time of the 1870 census. In the 1900 census in Cherokee Nation / Indian Territory, Henry's five children were enumerated as Cherokee Indian with 1/2 "white blood".
Henry's obituary appeared in the Muskogee Times-Democrat on August 15, 1907 as follows:
HENRY SCHOONOVER DEAD.
Henry Schoonover, a very old and well known inter-married citizen who have lived near the present town of Kiefton south of this city on the Midland Valley for nearly thirty-five years, died yesterday afternoon, aged 80 years. He will be buried on his own farm.
