Here is a nice history of our understanding of the brain by Carl Zimmer. It is an article from a website called Being Human which looks very interesting.

"The boy with the incredible brain". (47 minutes long)

From the website:

"This is the breathtaking story of Daniel Tammet. A twenty-something with extraordinary mental abilities, Daniel is one of the world’s few savants. He can do calculations to 100 decimal places in his head, and learn a language in a week. This documentary follows Daniel as he travels to America to meet the scientists who are convinced he may hold the key to unlocking similar abilities in everyone. He also meets the world’s most famous savant, the man who inspired Dustin Hoffman’s character in the Oscar winning film ‘Rain Man’. (2005)"

Superb interactive MRI pictures of the brain here. You view the brain from three directions and it highlights and labels the key parts!

Go here to see some stunning pictures of the brain (Source: New York Times)

Here is a page outlining information on Brain Structures and their Function (Source: Serendip). The site contains a lot of other information about the brain.

Lots of details about brain structure here. Fairly dense text but a great diagram. (Source: News-Medical).

How the Brain and Nerves work. A fairly simple animation. Go to PBS Online.

What about this! Make your own thinking cap here. It's a pdf file from the Brain Navigator.

Someone else has been busy with brains! Here is a 360o interactive picture of the outside of a real brain. Try full screen for a really magic effect. Source: The Welcome Collection [Nice collection of images here]

Wow! A game from the Wellcome Collection called Axon - you grow a nerve as long as possible, picking up points and avoiding other nerves. Even better, the background science is good!

Go here for the Allen Brain Atlas. It includes maps of the human and mouse brain, the developing human brain, non-human primates and, oddly, sleep! Pretty heavy, but at least keep an eye on the site!

Fantastic Japanese site called "Mindlab". Terrific set of tutorials with high production values. Beautifully created and visually stunning. Requires a good internet connection!

The Nervous System

A comprehensive introduction to the Nervous System is here. A little dated (2001) but, again, some very good diagrams. (Source: Penn Medicine)

Physiological events at the Neural Synapse. Go here: WISC-Online.

Synaptic Transmission - a little bit slow but good animation on the synapse. It's here from Harvard - so it has to be good! Note - it requires flash so it might not work on a iPad/iPhone.

Wow! A whole series of animations by Gary Fisk - go here. Look particularly under the Neuroscience sub-heading. There are also some illusions and lecture animations as well.

The Brain and Illusions

Just have to plug a site with over 650+ web sites related to illusions. Go here to Scoop.It.

Use the tag system to search for particular topics, videos, photos.

[Note: I have used a broad definition of the word 'illusion'. 95% of the sites that have been linked to are suitable to be shown in class.

One day I would like to teach the 'Brain and Behaviour' unit through illusions...Gerald Carey]

Psychology blogs

This one is called Neurophilosophy and can be seen here.

Lots of really good posts on the brain - very readable and interesting.

Note: the blog is shifting to the Guardian Newspaper Science blog site, so go here for the latest updates.

Here is "Neurohacks". From the site: "Neuroscience and the psychology of the everyday. Psychologist Tom Stafford explore the surprisingly complicated theories behind experiences and actions we take for granted daily".

Fairly new but already some interesting and very readable articles on, for example, "Why do we have superstitions", "Why can smells unlock memories" and "Why do songs stick in our head".

A brief introduction to Neuroscience by Vaughan Bell. Go this Guardian Science site. Includes a series of FAQs on the topic.
