His daughter Elizabeth’s marriage certificate states that her father was Jeremiah RUFFHEAD and her mother was Susannah RUFFHEAD, nee LUCKUS. Jeremiah occupation is given as a boot maker. It is interesting to see that the name “Jeremiah” occurs over several generations of RUFFINS as does the name “Richard” It is possible that his father was also known as Jeremiah as I have it on a birth record for Jeremiah born 1804

Another researcher has found that Jeremiah RUFFHEAD 1804-1886 changed his name to first, Richard, then Frederick. (see children of Richard RUFFHEAD and Agnes BUTLER above) this may open the slim possibility that the Richard in the Will above is actually the Elizabeth WHITBREAD’s son Jeremiah.

MILLBROOK Bedfordshire from http://www.galaxy.bedfordshire.gov.uk/
Millbrook on account of its situation, lying as it does on a range of hills which intersect the parish, whose slopes are covered with woodlands, has been described as one of the most beautiful villages in England.
Nearly three-quarters of a mile to the north of the village, upon the brook from which it takes its name, a watermill formerly stood. The mill was demolished in the lifetime of the last owner, who died about the year 1840. Indentations in the ground give distinct evidence of the site of this mill and of an adjoining farm, which has also disappeared. An avenue of elm trees still marks the position of the entrance drive. Local tradition also records the existence of a windmill upon the top of one of the low hills to the northward. The position of the church is very peculiar: it stands alone on an eminence said to be the original site of the cell of St. Albans, founded by Nigel de Wast, which was afterwards moved to Moddry and amalgamated with Beaulieu Priory. Below the church lies a tree clad valley, which tradition assigns as the spot pictured by Bunyan for his Valley of the Shadow of Death. The road winds past a pub and around the base of the wooded hill on which the church can just be seen above the trees.
The church of ST. Michael at Millbrook consists of a chancel 28 ft. by 16 ft. 4 in., a nave 39 ft. 4 in. by 17 ft. 4 in., north and south aisles 7 ft. 8 in. wide, a south porch, and a west tower 13 ft. square.
A blocked 13th-century lancet in the south wall of the south aisle is the oldest feature visible, the south arcade being circa1340; it may have been moved out from the wall of an aisle less nave. The north aisle was added in the 15th century, and the tower is of the same time; the chancel has been entirely rebuilt during the last century, and the whole church has undergone much restoration.

Family history
This memorial was erected by the occupant of the adjoining grave (Monument P04) Peter Anderson. Peter’s parents John Anderson and Jean Dunlop were the residents and tenants of Cumnock House Farm. John, the son of a farm labourer, was born in the Mearns in 1770, while his wife Jean Dunlop was born in Fenwick in 1773. John was to live to the advanced age of ninety years surviving his wife by thirteen years.
The greater part of this couple’s married life was spent at Cumnock House Farm and it was there that they raised their children. Cumnock House, sometimes referred to as Cummock House is shown spelt as such on this tombstone. Cumnock House Farm is described on the notes shown on Monument P04.
Amongst the family raised by this couple was a son named James born in 1803 at Mearns. James was to take tenancy at Lofts Farm where, until he married in 1852, he farmed his fifty acre holding as a bachelor. Aided by only one labourer and two servants, it was not until he was forty-eight years of age that he took himself a wife.
His wife Agnes Clark was the daughter of the farmer at Nether Malletsheugh Farm, William Clark and his wife Agnes Pollok. Young Agnes was a mere nineteen years of age when she married James Anderson. The couple went on to raise five children, four daughters and one son. Two of their issue, son John and daughter Janet, were to die at thirty-five and twenty-five years of age respectively and are buried alongside their father and grandparents. Janet died of tuberculosis, whilst no cause of death could be established for John as he had no record of medical problems.
After James died in 1871 his wife Agnes continued to farm at Lofts for another thirty years with the help of her son John and two general labourers, until John’s untimely death in 1897, when the farm transferred into the stewardship of John Barr.
Peter Anderson, the person buried beneath the first stone pictured above, was born in the Mearns to John Anderson and Jean Dunlop on 9th September, 1808. Peter, born into a farming family, was raised and spent his entire life on and about the farm known as Cumnock House Farm.
Cumnock House Farm was of average size, being sixty acres in extent. It was to be found situated between Caldcoats and Duncarnock farms to the west of Netherplace on the track between Mearns and Neilston. A mixed farm of arable and livestock it was of such quality that its produce supported the Anderson family over a period of five decades. At its peak the farm required the services of a ploughman, a dairymaid and a domestic servant, all signs of a healthy level of prosperity being achieved by its operation. The Brock Burn ran through its land on its route to feed the Balgray Reservoir.
Peter’s parents had farmed Cumnock House prior to his taking over the tenancy on the death of his father about 1855. Although Peter had several siblings, one of whom James farmed nearby Lofts Farm, only Peter and his sister Margaret remained on the farm latterly and stayed there until both their deaths. Neither party married, so no dependents remained for it to be passed on.
Peter was responsible for the erection of the Monument P05 which marks the graves of his parents, his brother James, a niece and nephew. His own memorial which adjoins that of his parents, was placed there by his sister on Peter’s death.
Margaret continued to work the farm with the aid of a dairymaid and two farm servants for a time after her brother’s death, and eventually it passed into the hands of Robert Reside.

Kathryn (Kate) Alice Claire Beadle (see Section 3), a relative researching her family from New Zealand, has provided much of the information on the MANN family.
Kate tells me that a - “number of Robert and James’s children stayed in Tasmania; some of James’ children moved to Victoria later in the 19th century; Sarah, my (ie. Kate’s) ancestor, immigrated to New Zealand and two of her brothers also came to NZ but then one brother's children moved to Victoria after WW1. Plus Marion moved to Canada and then to Utah. Obviously a very mobile lot!”

Breage Church, Cornwall
Breage is named after St Breaca, to whom the parish church is dedicated. She was an Irish
missionary from Ulster or Leinster who arrived in the area around 500 A.D. and settled on Tregonning Hill, overlooking the village of Breage, at a site near Trew. The nearby farm of Penbroc means "settlement of Breaca".
Following the Norman conquest of the 11th century the area was held by the Earls of Cornwall who gave Breage and its manorial chapels of Germoe, Gunwalloe and Cury to Hailes Abbey in
Gloucestershire. At that time the church is identified as "Eglos-broc". The modern French equivalent for 'eglos' is 'eglise' or 'church'. 'Broc' is a corruption of Breaca. During this period the previous church was replaced with a more substantial building in the Norman style.
The present church was built over a six year period being dedicated to St Breaca in 1456.
Many relatives including the RIPPERS held their baptisms, marriages and burials in Breage.
The wall paintings are medieval and are contemporary with the Ripper family.
