1793. December 19. Birth of John PHILLIPS (later known as STEVENS) son of Thomas STEVENS 1763-1831 at Norfolk Island. On 4 April 1825 John married Mary C. TRIMBY (nee EGAN) and died on 20 March 1883 in Longford Tasmania. He was buried on 23 March 1883 in Christ Church Cemetery, Longford TASMANIA.
There is a record dated 1813 January 30 in Sydney of a Mary EGAN being tried for receiving goods stolen by William Howell. There is also a record of Mary TRIMBY aged 22, being tried in Sydney and transported on the ANN to Van Diemans Land in 1815, this record gives John STEVENS as her husband. This last record must have been composed after 1825 with the knowledge that Mary married John STEVENS after she arrived in the Norfolk Plains in Van Diemans Land/Tasmania. Mary married James TRIMBY in 1817 in Van Diemans Land /Tasmania, and then remarried after James TRIMBY was sent to prison in Newcastle in 1818.
A correspondent has told me that John STEVENS took on the role as overseer of the TRIMBY property when James was sent to prison.
see: http://www.tasfamily.net.au/~schafferi/index.php?file=kop31.php
Mary EGAN may have been related to Bryan/Brian EGAN, a convict transported to Australia on the BRITANNIA in 1796. Brian EGAN worked as a Publican, labourer and seaman. Mrs Mary EGAN and a child followed her convict husband to the colony in New South Wales. - Needs more evidence
James TRIMBY married Mary EGAN on April 8 1817. Marriage was often more fluid in those days a significant separation could lead to a remarriage.
The TRIMBY family were among the first settlers at Norfolk Plains in Van Diemen’s Land with three farms on west bank of the South Esk River. James TRIMBY had a contract to supply fresh mutton to His Majesty’s Stores at Launceston. During one six-month period he supplied 1100 lbs of mutton.
James TRIMBY, his father Joseph TRIMBY and his brother and Joseph TRIMBY jnr were accused of sheep stealing and on 16 January 1818, sent to Sydney to stand trial in June. They were found guilty and sent to serve their sentences in Newcastle.
James TRIMBY was the son of Joseph ELLIOTT/TRIMBY ( 1864- 1836 died in Maitland, at 72 years old) and Elizabeth SEINEY. Joseph ELLIOTT, a 20 year old gardener, was transported to Botany Bay on the FRIENDSHIP in 1787 arriving 1788. They had been in Botany Bay/Sydney then Norfolk Island and then evacuated to the Norfolk Plains in Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) in January 1813. They were granted land at Longford.

Parents: Richard RUFFHEAD* (c1770- ) (2/2) and Agnes BUTLER*1771- (2/3) married 1798
(see people 2/2 & 3; Section 2 Meet The Family)
I believe this Richard RUFFIN is the brother of William Joseph RUFFHEAD* (Later RUFFIN) 1810-1885 (1/16)
Reasons
William had a brother called Richard Winchester RUFFHEAD born in the same year as Richard RUFFIN.
Richard RUFFIN is transported to Australia after being arrested in the area of London in which William lived.
They both change their names to RUFFIN in Australia.
They both go to Geelong in Australia within a few years of each other.
Richard petitioned the governor of Tasmania to allow his mother free travel to Australia
Richard returned to England and probably talked his brother into going to Australia.
Richard comes back to Australia with his own wife, stepdaughter and niece, Jeremiah’s daughter Elizabeth RUFFHEAD 1829-1917 , before William Joseph RUFFHEAD 1810 - 1885 and his family left England.
That the brothers lived at the same address in Geelong when William and family first arrived
Richard goes back to England before his death and declares his real name is RUFFHEAD.
There are strong similarities in the given names of descendants.
THe parents of William Joseph RUFFHEAD* (Later RUFFIN) 1810-1885 (1/16) were Richard RUFFHEAD* (c1770- ) (2/2) and Agnes BUTLER*1771- (2/3) married 1798 . Richard Winchester RUFFIN, is convicted as RUFFEN and Transported as RUSHEN.
Note there is another marriage in England at about the relevant time of another Richard RUFFHEAD and an Agnes so be careful.

Religious influences and English law
“In 1818, the famous English judge Lord Eldon went further, proclaiming that Christianity was part of the law of England, though not everyone would have warmed to his conception of Christianity. Lord Eldon opposed laws that abolished slavery, closed debtors’ prisons and permitted Roman Catholics to vote. He was reportedly so resistant to change that he wept in court when informed that the death penalty would no longer be available for petty larceny.” The Quest For Justice by Ken Crispin page 27.
Australia's Third Fleet
The third fleet of 11 ships arrived in 1791, with over 2000 convicts. The newspaper report states that
194 male convicts and 4 female convicts died during the voyage, and that though conditions
on board ship weren't as "diabolical" as the previous year, they were still outrageous.
As before, the list was compiled in London as so there is no way of knowing which people died on the voyage
out, or did not leave England for any reason.”

R. v. Ruffin
Supreme Court of Van Diemen’s Land
Montagu J., 6 April 1841
Source: Launceston Advertiser, 8 April 1841
Richard Ruffin was indicted for the manslaughter of Jane Burnfield, whose death it will be recollected, was occasioned by the upsetting of the Perth coach.
The Attorney-General, on behalf of the crown, briefly stated the facts, without comment, and called Peter Burnfield. - I live in this town, on the 10th February I was on the Perth Coach coming into Launceston, I got on at Perth, my wife was with me, there were other passengers on the coach, I paid eight shillings for our seats, the coach was upset; I do not know how many passengers were on the coach at that time. I can swear to five, I was sitting behind the driver, my wife was alongside of me, I saw my wife lying dead after the accident, I never saw her after that time, I was taken insensible to the hospital.
The jury retired for a few minutes, and brought in a verdict of Not Guilty

The copy of the Unclaimed Money Application made in 1931 and reported in the Mercury (see above) shows the family relationships, where they lived and the difficulties involved in finding Agnes. Use control + to enlarge the page if you find it too small to read. Control - will return the page to its current size.
An ASIDE -
An interesting co-incidence is that the family in the Unclaimed Money Application were represented by a
Mr T B BROWNRIGG (see article above).
I bought an old silver fob watch at the Camberwell market in Melbourne Victoria Austalia in the late 1980s. It just seemed a nice watch. The inscription referred to N B BROWNRIGG. I put it in a drawer and forgot it for 30 years.
For the last couple of years I have been researching my own family tree and become interested in family. One day I dropped my wrist watch and went to buy a new one. In conversation about watches with the jeweller, I mentioned the old fob watch that I kept in a drawer at home. She said it might be worth looking at. I showed it to my wife Lynne and we got interested to see if a family called BROWNRIGG existed. I researched the family to find a family member to whom I could give/return the fob watch. My research showed that the BROWNRIGG family have a very interesting and illustrious history.
The watch was inscribed -
“From MFB 1890
Norman B BROWNRIGG 22/11/91 Launceston”
The watch was made for J Sparrow Launceston who advertised his business selling watches in 1880.
It could have been a gift from Marcus Francis BROWNRIGG to his brother Norman B BROWNRIGG or, less likely, have been inherited from Captain Marcus Francis BROWNRIGG RN (d 1884) and may have passed to his son Rev. Canon Marcus Blake BROWNRIGG, 1835-1890 and then to Norman B BROWNRIGG in 1891.
It surprised me to find that in 1902 Norman B BROWNRIGG robbed a bank in which he worked in Launceston and went to jail for 2 years. He was discharged from prison in 1904.
I met Jeff BROWNRIGG from Sydney who kindly accepted the watch. Jeff's intention is to have it placed, if possible, with BROWNRIGG family papers in an appropriate public institution.

RUFFIN"S BAY : Photo taken after the Preece family had built the 2 houses and boatshed and shows the Maori Pa site and Ruffins Rocks - it was taken in the late 40's before the jetty was built. The Smoke box is in the hill behind the boatshed. From Jim SHARP
There is little remaining from the time of Richard Ruffin – an old stone lined well on our property and a smoke box dug into the bank at the end of the bay. The well defiantly dates from Richards time and it is probable that he used the smoke box to smoke fish for sale to the miners. Ther are also steps cut into the rock platform – used for accessing boats and for a time wheel barrow tracks were evident in the soft rock – I presume caused by barrowing vegetables etc to the boat for transport across the harbour. Richard RUFFIN’S partner in the mine at Manaia was, I believe, Philip Henry BLACKMORE of Parakiri, a miner who is on the 1885 Coromandel Electoral Roll
See Te Aroha News 24 January 1885 p3 for a description of the mine, the difficulties of mining, and its location and productivity
Manaia mentioned on the mining licence is a town and locality on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. It lies to the east of State Highway 25, south of Coromandel and north of Tapu. The Manaia River flows from the Coromandel Range into the Manaia Harbour to the west. The harbour contains mussel farms
The Manaia Forest Sanctuary, inland from Manaia, contains the sixth largest kauri tree in New Zealand. The Sanctuary contains about 410 kauri trees in an area of 101 hectares.
The local iwi, or local people are the Ngati Whanaunga and Ngāti Pukenga. The name comes from a Maori Chief called Hukunui Manaia
1889 At the Melbourne Exhibition a load of quartz from the Manaia mines and others in the area was on display. The parcel from the Blackmore and Ruffin claim at Manaia produced 11oz, 18dwts of rich looking gold valued at £3 5 shillings per oz.

Thames is at the south-western end of the Coromandel Peninsula and the major town in the area. The town was initially built during a gold rush.
The first major discovery of gold was made in the Kuranui Stream at the north end of Thames on August 10, 1867 by William Hunt. The resulting mine, known as the Shotover, produced more than 102,353oz. The era from 1868 to 1871 were the bonanza years for the town with gold production reaching £1,000,000 pounds sterling and it was soon the second-largest city in New Zealand. However, as the gold began to diminish, so did the population. The population in the 2006 census was 6,756, an increase of 51 since 2001. Many residents work at locally owned businesses servicing tourists and the local farming community. It is still the biggest town on the Coromandel

RUFFIN'S Bay, Coromandel, New Zealand
Ruffin's Bay is the curve in Wyuna Bay where the word "Bay" appears in bold in the coloured map near the lower edge of the map
1889 1899 – Richard RUFFIN made a submission to County Council re road to his property
1900 Richard Winchester RUFFIN (jnr) 1827- 1908 awarded the old age pension in Coromandel, New Zealand
“Local legend has it that the Ruffins planted a large orchard of pears, fig, walnuts and peach trees. These, along with vegetables, fish and oysters were sold to the Coromandel miners. Delivery was by row boat across the harbour.
A later owner of Ruffins recalled visiting the bay in 1928 with only the remains of a house and ancient pear trees remaining.
A previous resident of the bay recalls calling in on a Mrs Ruffin who lived down the coast from Thames asking for any information on Ruffins Bay. The lady was not forthcoming with any information and was not interested,
At some stage the name of the bay was changed to Ruffins Bay. – A Coromandel Survey District map of 1907 shows Wyuna Peninsula as Ruffins Peninsula.
“The road from the causeway was put in in the late 1940’s to Wyuna Bay and the link to Ruffins Bay was completed in the early ‘50’s. The road from the causeway was a private road until subdivision of the peninsula in the early 1960’s and the road from Wyuna Bay to Ruffins Bay is still a private Road.
There is little remaining from the time of Richard Ruffin – an old stone lined well on our property and a smoke box dug into the bank at the end of the bay. The well defiantly dates from Richard’s time and it is probable that he used the smoke box to smoke fish for sale to the miners. There are also steps cut into the rock platform – used for accessing boats and for a time wheel barrow tracks were evident in the soft rock – I presume caused by barrowing vegetables etc to the boat for transport across the harbour.”
There is a very good lithograph in the Illustrated London News 1853 after a water colour by Charles Heaphy of the 3 day meeting at Patapata in Nov 1852 between Lieutenant Governor Wynyard and the Hauraki Maori concerning the extraction of gold.

“Reginald RUFFIN [my grandfather] lived with us in a cottage at the back of our property when he retired He was extremely clever and finished up as inspector of mines for N Z in particular the gold mines. When he retired as inspector of mines he took up the position of Inspector of Quarries for New Zealand. He married in 1911 to Maud PRISK. He was a member of the Australian Institute of mines as well. Actually he was highly respected in this country and I have always been proud to be part of his family. His sister Lilian RUFFIN married a man whose surname was Hausseger. They lived in Melbourne. Reginald RUFFIN, or Reg as he was called, was a very strong personality to say the least. His father John RUFFIN had eloped with Francis and they had a baby [Reginald]. I think that Francis may have died. Her mother who was also called Francis stepped in to bring him up in the Presbyterian way. The Catholic Church took exception and excommunicated him. Reginald RUFFIN"S son Jack RUFFIN excelled himself in the NZ Fleet Air Arm during the war then followed in the mining interest.”

OBITUARY OF John DOWD
New Zealand Herald
11th November 1924 - page 10
Auckland Public Library Scrapbooks
One of the best-known of the Auckland coastal masters, Captain John Dowd, passed away at his residence, Bath Street, Parnell, on Saturday. Captain Dowd, who was in his seventy-eighth year, had resided in Auckland for 77 years. He arrived with his parents by the ship Minerva in 1847, being then only two months old. He decided to follow the sea, and after serving the necessary apprenticeship became an officer and finally master of various coastal vessels.
For over 50 years he engaged in the trade between Auckland and Napier, commanding many different vessels, but bringing his career to an end by his retirement 14 years ago without a mishap to mar his record. Among well-known vessels which he commanded were the Pukapuka, the Awanui, and Dominion. Although definitely retired from the sea, Captain Dowd continued to take a keen interest in shipping matters, and particularly in the Auckland Anniversary Regatta, in connection with which his services were utilised as handicapper.
He enjoyed robust health until about four months ago, when he suffered a stroke from which he failed fully to recover. He is survived by his widow, one son, Mr T. Dowd, of Hamilton, and five daughters, Mesdames W. McInnes and D. Millard, Remuera, Mrs W. Smith, of Parnell, Mrs H. J. Cutler, of New Lynn, and Mrs W. H. McGruer, of Ngaruawahia.
The funeral took place at Howick yesterday.
Another obituary appeared in the Weekly News 13th November 1924, page 56.
