Next the information on Josias RUFFHEAD of Bedford
In Valiant Pilgrim by John Bunyan 1675The pilgrim’s progress part 11
“Arrested May 10, 1670
One case was that of John White, the under-jailor at Bedford,
whose refusal to pay the church rate suggests that he had res
ponded to the influence of John Bunyan and his fellow-prisoners.
Another offender, Josias RUFFHEAD the cord-winder, was presented
"for refusing to come to Church at the time of dyvyne service
for about one month last' 1 . Josias's refusals were to persist until,
in 1672, he was in a position to sell to the members of the Bedford
Church an orchard containing a barn on the site of which the
present Bunyan Meeting in Mill Street stands.
During the two years in which the lapse of the Conventicle
Act meant relative freedom for the Independent community, more
than fourteen hundred cases, chiefly from small villages, came
before William Foster. The Quakers were the most persistent
offenders, but numerous Baptists, Independents, and occasional
Presbyterians were sentenced by that inexorable upholder of the
law.
Again and again they included the respected names of the
Bedford Church members, and in their ranks were a few "gentle
men", yeomen and farmers. But the great majority came from the
throng of poor and humble citizens weavers, warreners, husband
men, gardeners, labourers who throughout history have suffered
most severely from persecution, social injustice, and war, and
have fought most stoutly for freedom, equality, and peace.
Like other Nonconformist congregations, the Bedford Church
also required a place to meet. Ever since their loss of St. John's
Church just after the Restoration they had been driven from pillar
to post, seeking to evade the assiduity of William Foster and his
supporting battalion of informers in woods, fields, farm-house
kitchens, and private homes.
For some time Josias RUFFHEAD, the cordwainer (shoemaker) who had been
"presented"' at the Archdeacon's Court for refusing to go to
church, had kept his eye upon an orchard in Mill Lane which
contained a barn. It stood next to John Eston's garden on a strip
of land, adjoining Castle Lane, which, was lower than the street
on the north side, and was said to have once been part of the moat
round Bedford Castle.
The orchard and barn belonged to Justice Crornpton of
Elstow, who twelve years earlier had declined to go bail for John
Bunyan, but had now no objection to selling him and his colleagues
a plot of land. Josias Rufihead duly acquired the orchard and
John's application for licenses included the barn, which was
thereupon permitted "to be a place for the use of such as doe not
conforme to the Church of England who are of the Perswasion
commonly called Congregational!". This comprehensive word,
which had also been used in the preaching license given to John
himself, included all those who regarded the individual congre
gation as the highest authority, under God, for decisions upon
doctrinal and moral questions.
When these necessary formalities had been completed, the
orchard and barn were conveyed by indenture from "Josias
RUFFHEAD to John Bunyan, of the Towne of Bedford, Brasier", and
to five of his colleagues, in return for a sum of 50. It was
conveniently situated for John, being only a few steps from his
house in St. Cuthbert's Street.
The present Bunyan Meeting at the south-east comer of Mill
Street stands on the site of this orchard, though a flight of steps
now leads up to it instead of down, as steps once led down into the
Old Meeting with its three gabled ridges which in 1707 replaced the
barn. On the east side of the Meeting House, the sunken Garden “
“The members of the Bedford Church gave their spare time to
clearing and furnishing the barn, and when John preached there
on the opening day, the large building could not contain all those
who wished to attend. So they stood outside in the orchard, crowd
ing close to the door while the pigeons from Josias RUFFHEAD's
dove-house circled gracefully overhead.”
In conscious protest against corruption in high places, the
Bedford Church maintained its standards. Its members continued
to worship in Josias RUFFHEAD's barn until 1707, when the building
with three gabled ridges known in Bedford as "the Old Meeting"
was erected on the same site under John Bunyan's successor,
Ebenezer Chandler.”
These documents are held at Bedfordshire and Luton Archives and Record Service
The John Bunyan Museum in Bedford is another good source of information on the Events of that time.
“Followingthe return of monarchy and Charles II in 1660, the Church of England again became the main/ dominant church in England. In 1662 the Act of Uniformity led to the Great Ejectment. The Act meant that all ministers had to follow the Common Book of Prayer in services and acknowledge the hierarchy of Bishops and archdeacons. Anyone who refused wasbanned from preaching and made to leave their parish. John Bunyan was imprisoned for continuing to preach, although he was already in gaol before the ejectment. The church group that he belonged to went 'underground' and had to minister themselves. In 1668 they began to re-surface as the Act was not re-newed and more freedom was allowed the non-conformists
According to Tibbutt's book - On May 15th, 1670 the group were meeting in a members house, the service was interrupted by the town constables and they all appeared before the magistrate. They were all fined, and their goods seized to pay thefine. On the list of names and occupations of the congregation is - Josias Ruffhead, cordwainer.
In 1672 Josias Ruffhead purchased an orchard in Mill Lane (now Mill Street) in which there was a barn. This was licensed as a place of meeting for the church. Once licenced it was 'conveyed by indenture dated August 20th, 1672' following payment of £50, from "Josias Ruffhead to John Bunyan"... and 4 other members of the group. The barn was used for many years, and then a purpose built church was put up instead (called the three gables), followed by the current church." of William WHITBREAD* c 1626-1701 Chart 3 No.2
William WHITBREAD*born in Upper Gravenhurst, Bedfordshire, England (3/2)
From a Bedfordshire online site -
There have been WHITBREADs in Bedfordshire since at least 1314 when a Peace Roll reveals John WHYTBRED as an elector for the Biggleswade Hundred and Richard WHYTBRED an elector for the Flitt Hundred [Bedfordshire Historical Records Society Volume XXXII pages 37-38]. The ancestors of the WHITBREADs of Southill Park seem to have come from the hamlet of Ion in Gravenhurst. In the WHITBREAD archive [W3150] William WHITBREAD* is recorded as selling Ion Manor in 1639 to his son Henry*. In the same year the family began to buy property in Cardington (W263-266). In the 18th century the great philanthropist and prison reformer John HOWARD was also building himself a Cardington estate, John BYNG remarking of Cardington: "a Village of much Neatness, with all Houses so smart, and the Green so nicely planted…for Messrs WHITBREAD and HOWARD being at variance (luckily of the Village) strive which shall most benefit and adorn it" [Torrington Diaries Vol.IV p.109].
Family related to William WHITBREAD* c 1626-1701 Chart 3 No.2
Samuel WHITBREAD [1720-1796] was born in Cardington, the seventh of eight children. At 14 he was sent to London to become apprentice to a brewer, John WITMAN and in 1742 went into partnership on his own account with a Thomas SHEWELL; they had two breweries but consolidated on a site in Chiswell Street in 1750. In 1752 WHITBREAD bought property in Potton [W2107]. In 1765 WHITBREAD bought SHEWELL out and by 1800 the brewery was the largest in London. Due to his success Samuel WHITBREAD was able to enter politics, being elected Member of Parliament for Bedford in 1768, a seat he held until 1790. In the year before his death Samuel WHITBREAD bought Southill Park, a 17th century house, remodelled by George BYNG, 1st Viscount Torrington and later members of the BYNG family [W2200-2222]. He also bought land in Old Warden from 1773 [W2223-2413] and purchased Elstow Manor in 1792 [W2809-2810] and other land in Elstow between 1792 and 1796.
Child: Samuel WHITBREAD 1758 - 1815
______________________________________________________________________________
The son of Samuel WHITBREAD 1720-1796 , another Samuel [1758-1815] is a prominent member of the family. He was born in Cardington and entered the family brewing business in 1786. He entered parliament as member for Bedford, his father's old seat, in 1790. Whereas his father had been a Tory, Samuel junior was a Whig. In 1800 he exchanged land acquired in Old Warden between 1783 and 1799 with the 2nd Baron Ongley for Ongley land in Southill [W2584-2589]. Between 1796 and 1804 he bought land in Wilshamstead [W2721-2799]. He purchased land in Bedford, Saint Mary in 1799 [W3024-3067].
A reformer, Samuel WHITBREAD 1758-1815 campaigned for the abolition of slavery and for a national system of education. He became the leader of the Whigs, the opposition, in parliament after the death of Charles James FOX in 1805. He made the mistake of championing Napoleon's reforms in France and came to be seen as a supporter of his. During 1814 WHITBREAD began to suffer depression. This ultimately led to his suicide, by cutting his throat, on 6th June 1815, just twelve days before the battle of Waterloo.
The WHITBREAD family continue to live at Southill Park. They also continue to take an active interest in WHITBREAD Group Plc. This firm no longer has any interest in brewing but does own a number of well- known brands including Premier Inn, Brewers Fayre, Beefeater and Costa Coffee. A number of members of the family have been members of Parliament, Lords Lieutenant and High Sheriffs for Bedfordshire.

Where I have been able to verify statements contained in the letter they have proved to be accurate.

Herbert RUFFIN died in 16 February 1916 Cheltenham, from a heart attack at 35 after a long bout of bronchial pneumonia. He was 6'5 1/2" tall. Victoria. Death Reg. No.C-1090
From Patricia LEE only child of Herbert William RUFFIN and granddaughter of Walter RUFFIN, referring to Hilda Evelyn BARRETT 1900 - and the letter Hilda wrote in 1984 -
“She also had a bible that belonged to Clara Ruffin in which all the Nugent & Ruffin birthdates are entered. Hilda spoke of Clara and Agnes being unmarried and moving together to Brisbane until their deaths. They bought a 1/2 acre block in Taringa and moved the house to the front of the block. There were in business in the City till the war started and imports ceased. They had magnificent gardens and in the 1940s Hilda would stay with them for 3 months each winter to help out as they were getting on in years. In 1952 when Agnes [Reg No.1952/B37770] died Hilda moved there permanently until Clara died in 1958 aged 89 ½
[Reg No.1958/B25980]. The house was left to Hilda but she sold it and moved back to Victoria to be near family. I would tend to think that the dates for the births and deaths would be pretty reliable seeing her close relationship to them.”

Edward Barret RUFFIN was born on the 05/04/1910 in Geelong. With the arrival of the WW2 Edward enlisted in the Army and was discharged after 2 months he was medically unfit to continue duty, he was diagnosed with Fibrositis. In more recent times this condition has been renamed Fibromyalgia.
Edward last worked at Siddons Industries in West Heidelberg Victoria this facility manufactured "SIDCHROME" spanners, when he commenced his employment at Siddons his first task daily was to raise the "Australian Flag". Edward was forced to retire from work at Siddons Industries when it came to light that he had reached the compulsory retirement age of 65. He was older than 65 because he lied about his age claiming he was 10 years younger when commenced work.
Edward had an offbeat sense of humor, several years earlier we were reminded by Maureen about their father's sense of humor, Maureen and her Dad were in the garden at home and the conversation was basically as follows:
Edward : Now there's only one way to look at things.
Maureen: But what if you don't see it that way, Dad?
Edward : Well then you're wrong.
Edward passed away in Yarraville Victoria on the 22/12/1989 aged 79 years.

c. 1907 Death of Charles Frederick RUFFHEAD later RUFFIN in Geelong
______________________________________________________________________________
Born in Hereford England
I take the spelling of "Christiannia" from her own signature on her wedding certificate issued in 1866.
1866 Married Charles Frederick RUFFHEAD (later RUFFIN) (1839- c1907) Chart 2 in Geelong Vic Marriage Cert. No. 103
A William SEADON married Hannah Jemima NEWMAN on 26 December 1825 at All Souls St Marylebone in London. These people are most likely Christiannia's parents IGI M05391-1 England-ODM
On the Marriage Certificate obtained by Karen SECKOLD, Charles was a Butcher at the time and Christiannia Elizabeth SEADON 1845-1920 was the daughter of William Henry SEADON and Hannah Jemimah NEWMAN(??) ,The words are not clear. She was born c 1845, Hereford (?), England as her age given on the marriage certificate on 22 January 1866 is 21 years.
Witnesses: William Joseph RUFFIN and Sarah HARRIS
Sarah HARRIS 1847- 1918 married Richard RUFFHEAD (Later RUFFIN) 1842 -1916 Chart 2 , son of William Joseph RUFFHEAD* (Later RUFFIN) 1810-1885 (1/16) in 1867.
In Familysearch there is a record of the birth on 17 October 1830 of a William Henry SEADON in Islington, Middlesex, London England. This may be a brother for Christiannia as the parents were William SEADON and Hannah Jemina SEADON. EnglandEasy 2232225, fn 1268. This would put the two families close to each other when Charles Frederick RUFFHEAD (later RUFFIN) (1839- c1907) and Christiannia SEADON were children.
A Christian SEADON aged 20 came Dec 1861 as an Assisted Immigrant on the Oithona. An IGI submitted entry identifies her as the daughter of Hannah Newman and George Seadon born c1842.The family were registered at Geelong, with Christina's surname as Seddon, Seedon, Seadon. From: http://www.reocities.com/mepnab/s/s40.html The problem with this is that on Christianna's marriage certificate her father is definitely William Henry SEADON and Christiannia Was 21 in 1866.
Christiannia voted in Corio, Geelong

1878 Birth of Caroline Elizabeth RUFFIN Reg 16196, died 1966 Reg No. 15226, Geelong, Victoria;
Married Matthew Mayo Meloury
Children
Matthew b1899
William b1901
Alice Veronica b1907
Matthew and Caroline Meloury lived at 24 Spring Street in Geelong West. A house which was previously owned by Caroline’s parents Charles Ruffin and Christianna Seddon.
Their son Matthew married Beatrice Sager and lived at 37 O’Connell Street, Geelong West. Matthew worked as an Engineer at Donaghy’s Rope works. A short time into their marriage, Matthew was hit on the head by a cricket ball and suffered significant injuries from which he later succumbed. Matthew was aged 24 on his death in 1923 Reg. No.10537 Geelong.
William married Gladys ?. He served in WWII but was sent home from the middle East following a gunshot wound to his knee. He and his wife built a home in Ocean Grove on The Terrace. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful in starting a family. Gladys died in the early 1980s and William lived until the age of 95, dying in 1996.
Alice Veronica (known to family as Vera) married George King in 1935 and lived next door to Matthew and Caroline at 22 Spring Street, Geelong West for the majority of their married life. They had one son b1939. Vera died in 1982 in Geelong Hospital following a heart attack.
Caroline Meloury died on 5th July 1966 aged 87 in Grace McKellar Hospital (now known as McKellar Centre, Barwon Health) from general aged related symptoms. Basically her heart gave out. She is buried in Geelong West Cemetery with her son Matthew.
Matthew Meloury Snr continued to live an active life. Despite officially retiring from the Geelong wharfs in his mid 80s, he continued to attend work each day, even if it was just to sweep the floors or make coffee. He died in 1976 (also In Grace McKellar Hospital) following a short illness aged 101 years. Matthew was a remarkable man who in all of his 101 years was never sick, not even with the common cold, nor had he ever suffered a headache (this was despite actively drinking and smoking his whole adult life). The only sign of aging towards the end was memory loss and the usual slowness of pace. Matthew (Snr) is also buried in the lawn section of Geelong West Cemetery with his daughter Alice Veronica (Vera).

“Les Rolstone had a house in Moonie Ponds but lost it in the Depression. He used to make and sell lollies to try to make ends meet. They then moved to Geelong. He was a panel Beater at Fords and during the War had to teach women how to weld. He told many a story about that including them setting each other on fire spinning around to talk with a lit welding torch! He later bought the Anakie Property and did wood cutting. Later clearing the land and farming it with sheep, cattle and crops. In his old age he sold the farm and moved to Geelong. When his and his wife Chrissy's health deteriorated they had to move to Hostels for the aged. After passing away his estate included the Anakie Property, It was on 3 titles. The Rock, The house block and the Tram block. He also owned a 5 acre block that Karen and Robert nearly bought. The Geelong house was also sold in Ernest St, Bell Post Hill. See documents on wills, Properties etc. It all had to be sold in accordance with Auriel’s Will.”

Notes for ROY LESLIE ROLSTONE from Karen SECKOLD:
“Roy was born at home in 203 Hope street Geelong West,
A Dr was called to assist with the Birth and Nanna Rolly told me he was that drunk he fell asleep on the bed next to her.
He went to school at Minifold Heights in Geelong.
Lived next to the Vickery family and was friend with Auriel from a young age.
Child hood sweet hearts
He did National Service. I applied for and got his posthumous medal. Roy died 1 year before his wife aged 61. She told me she never thought she would see him in a coffin as she was the one with the Cancer she had expected to go first.
Dorothy Paton told me Roy was a wild child. She remembers him finding a pistol and hiding it in his room. His father found it and made him throw it of the Cunningham Pier. She also remembers him stealing the bread off the back of the Baker’s cart and running away! I was told by someone that when he was young he used to stand in the lane and throw stones over the back fence to get Nanna Rolly to open the gate. One day he hit her right between the eyes and it bled a lot. Another time he came home with something in his pocket that made a tinkling sound. When made to turn out his pockets he had doves on a wire, like the ones under glass in cemeteries. He told me once that he was always busting out of his trousers and had put a safety pin in the crotch. Forgot and jumped a fence and it popped open! Nasty.
When a baby he was cuddling Hazel's golly wog and put it in the fire, then cuddled it and burnt his face. Had to go to hospital every day to have the dead skin removed. From this he always had red cheeks, all his life from the skin damage.
