c 1650 Birth and christening of Edward BENNY*
1695 November 25 Edward BENNY* married Christian REPPER* c1650 , daughter
of William RIPPER* and Christian FRANCIS*, in St. Breage, Cornwall. ID 309026
1710 death of Edward BENNY*
1710 July 22 Edward* buried, Breage, Cornwall ID 1263894
Research Notes:
It appears from the Breage Parish Registers that Edward was the ancestor of the BENNY (BENNEY) family of Breage and Sithney. There are no entries in the Breage BDM Registers for individuals with the surname of BENNY prior to 1695 (his own marriage to Christian REPPER), even allowing for orthographic variations such as Beney, Benney, Bennye, Binney...
Hence Edward came from another town. Having married in Breage in 1695, he was most likely born between 1665 and 1675. An Edward BENNY was christened in St. Columb Minor in 1670, son of Edward BENNY and Christian SMITH. Another Edward BENNY was christened in 1666 in Colan, Cornwall, son of John BENNY and Loveday, although he is probably the same as John BENNIE who married in Colan in 1686.

William is mentioned in the 1641 Protestation Roll as a constable.
The protestation itself reads:-
I,-------- do, in the presence of Almighty God, promise, vow, and protest to maintain, and defend as farr as lawfully I maye, with my Life, Power and Estate, the true Reformed Protestant religion, expressed in the Doctrine of the Church of England, against all Popery and Popish Innovations, within this Realme, contrary to the same Doctrine, and according to the duty of my Allegiance, His Majesties Royal Person, Honour and Estate, as alsoe the Power and Privileges of Parliament, the lawful Rights and Liberties of the Subjects, and any person that maketh this Protestation, in whatsoever he shall do in the lawful Pursuance of the same; and to my power, and as farr as lawfully I may, I will appose and by all good Ways and Means endeavour to bring to condign Punishment all such as shall, either by Force, Practice, Councels, Plots, Conspiracies, or otherwise, doe any Thing to the contrary of any Thing in this present Protestation contained: and further, that I shall, in all just and honourable ways, endeavour to preserve the Union and Peace betwixt the Three Kingdoms of England, Scotland and Ireland: and neither for Hope, Feare, nor other Respect, shell relinquish this
Promise, Vow and Protestation.
The Breage record indicates that "None within the said parish warned to doe this service have refused it but there were some absent, that have not done it and some othere are sick and not abel to come."
Almost all qualifying members of the RIPPER family signed the Roll. From Ken RIPPER

Andrew RIPPER* died: c 1630
Andrew was one of three lives used to secure a lease taken by his father, William, in 1586. The three lives on the lease on Ruthdower Mill were William, his wife Pascasia and their son Andrew.
Getting there:
The settlement part of Crawle is best approached from Godolphin Cross, taking the eastbound road from the crossroads in the centre of the village. The road drops down to Ruthdower Cottage and then rises up the hill past Trenear farm entrance on the left. A few hundred yards further on, again on the left, is the entrance to Treleggo farm. Immediately past this on the opposite side of the road is the
northern end of a lane leading towards Polladras, called Crohall Lane in 1647. Travelling south along Crohall Lane, the second gate on the right provides access to what was the settlement part of Crawle.
The plot is triangular, roughly equilateral, the 30 yard stretch on Crohall Lane forming its eastern boundary. The western point of the triangle looks towards Tregonning Hill on the skyline. Just a couple of fields just beyond the western edge of Crawle can be seen the remains of the engine house of a mine.
Andrew is recorded as being from 'Ruisse' at the baptism of his son William in 1610. Ruisse is also mentioned in Andrew's father's will in 1616: two closes of land in Ruisse called commonly by the names of parke Andrean and parke Menmoon with the moore under it [parke means field, moore meant open, unenclosed land].
How they lived
Walls of earth, low-thatched roofs, few partitions, no planchings (wooden floors) or glass windows, and scarcely any chimnies other than a hole in the wall to let out the smoke: their bed, straw, and a blanket', and their furniture a 'mazer and a panne or two', comprised the substance of even the better class of Cornish husbandman.
Breage's proximity to the sea and the actions of its earlier residents earned it a fearsome reputation with seamen as can be evidenced from the following:
"God keep us from rocks and shelving sands,
From Germoe men and Breage hands"

The little more we know of William's life is largely gleaned from his will and the attached inventory of his estate. The will is transcribed below. It is written in the third person as the will was nuncupative, i.e. dictated to another for transcription probably because William was too ill to sign it or make a mark. He drew up the will on the 10th March 1616 and was buried a week later on the 17th March 1616.
1615-1616 March 17 William RIPPER* was buried in Breage Cornwall
Another name for William was William RYPPER.
By means of a grant of reversion of a lease of mill dated 16 Jan 1577 (as worded below) William and Pascoe RYPPER (sons of William RYPPER senior) and John RYPPER (son of John RYPPER senior) undertook to take the tenancy of Ruthdower Mill from John ARUNDELL, Lord of Pengwedna Manor. The contents were described as "a grain mill called Ruthdowre Mill, together with the multure [the responsibility to grind corn] of John Arundell's tenements of Pengwedna manor, both free, customary and conventionary; which mill is currently held by Thomas John for term of his life for William and Pascoe RYPPER (sons of William RYPPER senior) and John RYPPER (son of John RYPPER senior) to hold after the death of Thomas for term of their lives successively". The rent was "26s 8d yearly at four terms, plus all burdens (onera), rents, heriots, customs and services previously due and accustomed.
Entry fine £13 6s 8d paid".
Reference: AR/4/1115_Creation dates: 1577, 16th Jan
1577 Audit Book describes William RIPPER as a reeve in Pengwenna. A reeve was the person in charge of day to day running of an estate for his lord. And in 1584: "Pengwenna (John RIPPER, deputy of William RIPPER, reeve)"
One of the bailiff’s deputies was the reeve, who ensured that villagers who owed labour services
showed up for work. He supervised the formation of plough teams, mended his lord’s fences, saw to the penning and folding of the lord’s livestock and had many other duties as well.
The Court Rolls of 24th October 1586 record the following:
William and Pascasius, sons of William REPPER deceased, and John son of John RIPPER
surrendered their title to the grain mill called Ruthdower.
The new lease was taken up by William RIPPER, Pascasia his wife and Andrew their son. With the mill went the obligation for the tenants to grind their corn there, which had been grown on the manor of Pengwedna and Prospidneck. If the tenants did not grind their corn where specified by the landowner, they could be in default of the lease. (Ref - ARUNDELL Family Papers - Leases of Ruthdower Mill AR/4/1115)
On the same date John and William Ripper surrendered the tenancy of Crawle (Crohall) which
had been leased to them on 16th January 1577.
The new lease on Crawle was in the names of John RIPPER, his son John RIPPER and Constance SQUIRE, the daughter of Richard SQUIRE.
William had been a joint titleholder of Ruthdower Mill with his brother Pascasius and his cousin John before 1586. At that time the living arrangements were reorganised and William and his family took on the tenancy at Ruthdower Mill and William's cousin John stayed at Crawle. The three lives on the lease on Ruthdower Mill were William, his wife Pascasia and their son Andrew, aged about 2. There are no records which relate what happened to William's brother Pascaw and it is possible that he remained living with William even though his name was not on the lease.
"In the name of God, Amen.
"The tenth day of March Anno Domini 1616.
"William Ripper of the parish of Breage did make and ordain this last will and testament nuncupative in manner and form following, viz; - "Imprimis {especially} he did commend his soul to Almighty God his maker and redeemer, and his body to the earth,
"Item - he did give to the church of Breage one shilling,
"Item - he did give and bequeath to each of his godchildren one shilling,
"Item - he did give and bequeath to Andrew RIPPER his son all his wearing apparel save one pair of breeches, which he did give and bequeath to Bennett TRENWHEAL,
"Item - he did will that Pasca his wife and executrix should promise Andrew his son, to have and
enjoy during the life of his said wife two closes of land in Ruisse called commonly by the names of parke Andrean and parke Menmoon with the moore under it [parke means field, moore meant open, unenclosed land]
"Item - he did give and bequeath to Stephen and William sons of the said Andrew one ewe lamb a piece.
"Item - all other his goods and chattels not before given or bequeathed the said William RIPPER did give and bequeath to Pasca his wife whom he did ordain and make his whole executrix and whom the said William RIPPER did entreate that she the said Pasca would at the time of her death make Richard RIPPER son of Andrew RIPPER either her whole or half executor.
"Witnesses to this will were Andrew RIPPER & Thomas TRENWHEAL"
It is possible that Ruisse was in fact Ruthdower and the two fields mentioned called Andrea and
Menmoone were nearby.
Bennett TRENWHEALE was the brother of Pascase.
The Inventory of all the goods and chattels of William RIPPER of the parish of Breage deceased was prepared by (...) Moore and Henry THOMAS the sixth day of July Anno Domini 1616 and amounted to £19-17- 2. It comprised:
2 tableboards, a chair and a form - £ 0-10- 0, 1 old cupboard - £ 0- 5- 0,
pewter vessels - £ 1- 8- 0, 3 candlesticks, a quart and a tin cup - £ 0- 3- 0, his wearing apparel and 1 piece of new cloth - £ 1- 6- 8, 3 bedsteads with bedclothes - £ 1-13- 4, one other bed with the furniture - £ 1- 0- 0, 3 sheets, 2 board cloths, three towels and two pillow ties - £ 0-13- 4,
4 little chests - £ 0- 6- 8, 4 pans and 2 crocks - £ 3- 0- 0, 1 hogshead, 1 barrel, 1 little sieve and 5 tubs - £ 0-10- 0, 2 branding irons, 1 spit, one (...)axe and an old pan - £ 0- 2- 6, 2 old tubs, two (...) and a (...) - £ 0- 3- 0, 4 silver spoons - £ 0- 6- 0, a little barrel and a can - £ 0- 2- 0, 1 fleece - £ 1- 0- 0, half a fleece - £ 0-10- 0, a calf - £ 1- 5- 4, (...) sheep - £ 1- 0- 0, geese - £ 0- 3- 0
3 pigs - £ 0- 4- 0, a cock and five hens - £ 0- 2- 0, 3 bushels of barley - £ 0-15- 0, 2 bushels of oats - £ 0- 4- 0, a bushel of wheat - £ 0- 8- 0, half bushel of rye - £ 0- 3- 4, corn in the ground - £ 2-13- 4
The inventory resembles that of a smallholder who may also be a tin streamer. There is nothing here to suggest firmly that he was still a miller. It may be, therefore, that sometime after 1598 (his last known office as reeve) but before his death he moved away from Ruthdower Mill. The contributory causes of this change could be found amongst these factors:
* in 1606, 1607 and 1608 there was a time of dearth in Cornwall following cold winters and poor harvests;
* the nearby mine, East Great Work, was expanding and Ruthdower land was possibly used for sinking new shafts; there are shafts showing at the site of the grist mill on a nineteenth century map;
* the watercourse to Ruthdower Mill was unreliable, water being used to power mine equipment such as stamps;
* he was a miller and also a farmer but had an obligation to grind the corn for the manor; it is possible that this obligation no longer suited him.

c 1577 William REPPER* died
1. Residence: Leased Crawle, Breage, Cornwall. The family probably had it for three generations.
William's birth has been estimated at about 1500. His life events indicate a first born child about 1528 and a death around 1577, both of which are consistent with his birth around this time. William's birthplace has been lost to us over the passage of time but it is likely to have been in or
around Breage or Gunwalloe in Cornwall. His later life events are centred upon the parish of Breage and the Manor of Pengwedna within Breage.
In England a parish is a subdivision the Roman Catholic Church or the Church of England. At the time of William REPPER’S birth England was a Roman Catholic country but by the time of his death the state religion had changed to Church of England. Each parish has the services of a parish priest or vicar and may have a fellow priest, called a curate working along with him. Each parish usually has a parish church where religious services take place. The incumbent for Breage parish at the time of William's baptism was one of Sir William PEARCE, Master Thomas GODOLPHIN or Master John JAKES.

The secular system of land holding and administration was known as ‘the manorial system’. The ‘lord of the manor’ would, in the middle ages, have been a tenant or a sub-tenant of the King.
The lord of the manor would have had a house for his own use (the ‘demesne’) though he may not have lived there. Specified areas were determined as commons or waste, the remainder might be let to ‘free’ tenants who paid an annual money rent, and to ‘villeins’ who occupied lands in return for labour services. Additional dues might include payments ‘in kind’, the performance of manorial offices, payments upon death or marriage, attendance at the manor’s court, and the requirement to grind corn at the manor’s own mill. The Lords of the Manor of Pengwedna were members of the Arundell family. Sir John Arundell was born in 1495 and went by the nickname of Jack of Tilbury. He was invested as a Knight in 1513 at the Battle of the Spurs. He held the offices of Sheriff of Cornwall and Vice-Admiral of the West, under King Henry VII and King Henry VIII.
Ken Ripper provided the descriptions of the Ripper family circumstances.
The 1543/4 Subsidy Rolls for Breage in Cornwall lists a William Repper being assessed in the value of 2 marks (one mark was one third of a pound - six shillings and eight pence). He was a resident and owned or leased property. William b 1483 may be one assessed, or it may be his son who was probably a tinner and may be mentioned in the Tinner's Muster of 1535:

Richard BEAURIPPER* of Chyvarloe in Gunwalloe and was a reeve in Carminow in 1480 for the ARUNDELL family. This included Chyvarloe, Berepper (see family name- they dropped the “Be” in the 1500s) in Gunwalloe and Crawle in Breage. His income would probably be from mining, fishing and farming.
The record of details about our Ripper family from Cornwall is the result of the hard work and generosity of many members of the family from the world.
Families related to the RIPPERS can be found in Redruth, St Stithians, Perranzabuloe and St Austell. There are still members of the RIPPER family left in Cornwall. Some still bear the names of RIPPER and REPPER.
The Norman aristocracy adopted place names or occupations as surname. Before this people in England and Cornwall did not have surnames.
The manorial records which have survived and mention members of the RIPPER family show them in Carminow Manor in 1480 and in Pengewedna Manor after 1543.
Carminow manor had holdings in these parishes: - Gunwalloe, Breage, Helston, Mawgan In Meneage, Constantine and Cury.
The manors with holdings in Gunwalloe parish: - Carminow and Winnington
The manors with holdings in Breage parish: - Carminow, Pengewdna, Colenso, Connerton, Godolphin, Helston in Kerrier, Helston Tony, Methleigh, Pengarwick, Pengersick, Rinsey, Spernon & Pengelly, Trewinnard and Treworlis.
The fifteenth century manor court rolls record a place named Beauripper in Gunwalloe parish. This place can still be found, now spelt as Berepper.
Chyvarloe
Richard Beauripper is the earliest known family member. His existence is known from an Account Roll for the manor of Carmynowe which was written in September 1480 in the time of Henry VI. On that roll he is recorded as holding 'at will' a parcel of land at Chyvarloe assessed at twelve shillings. Chyvarloe is half a mile south of Carminowe Creek, which is part of the freshwater lake known as the The Loe, half a mile from the sea cliffs on Mounts Bay and half a mile north of the settlement of Berepper. It is likely that his surname has been taken from the name of Berepper. Berepper and Chyvarloe are shown in manorial records dated 1460 as Beauripper and Chiwarloo.
Independently from the Cornish Ripper family, another unrelated family of the same name can be found in East Anglia.
Children:
c 1483 Birth of William BEAURIPPER* c 1483 William BEAURIPPER* in Breage, Cornwall ( for John REPPER* 1475- see note above
Richard BEAURIPPER was living in Gunwalloe in the 1470s and 1480s. He derived his income from farming and fishing. It is possible that he also worked as a miner.
Establishing relationships has been supported in some instances by the use of aliases. Some incumbents of the parish of Breage, when recording baptisms, marriages and burials of their flock have helpfully identified them by using place names or other family names as aliases. There are records which show the use of the surname Ripper and an alias, but some which just show the alias as the surname. For instance Edward Ripper or Crohall is a reasonable indication that Edward Ripper lived at Crawle. In the Poll Tax returns of 1660 we find two entries which read "Edward Ripper and wife". One Edward is recorded as living at Crawle, the other at Trescawe. This use of aliases has been critical to the construction of this family tree. The Crohall/Crawle alias has been used over 6 generations of the descendants of John and Janet.
William and his family (William and John) tend towards farming and mining as their primary form of income. Their early interest was probably as farmers at Crawle. In the 1584 Toll Tin return William and John are shown as miners of the Polladras mine. Contemporary records also show them as reeves. As the family developed John's branch stayed at their homestead at Crawle whilst William's branch became millers at Ruthdower. Both families are mentioned in land leases as well as wills which record the passing of estate from one generation to another. As well as the content of these documents and the aliases, the relative prosperity of the families has been useful in establishing relationships.
Gunwalloe
The parish of Gunwallow (Cornish: Sen Gwynnwalo), alias Winninton and Seynt Sewana, is situated in the Meneage district of the Lizard, in the deanery and Hundred of Kerrier. It is bounded on the north by Carminow Creek and the parish of Mawgan, on the east by the parishes of Cury and Mullion, and on the south and west by Mullion. Gunwallow is a small parish, lying between Cury and the sea. It extends northwards along the shore to the Loe Pool, forming the northwest side of the peninsula of Meneage.
The village and church of Gunwalloe are romantically situated amongst the sand dunes and cliffs on the west coast of the Lizard and there are local stories of smuggling, looted wrecks, and buried treasure._
The parish name is taken from the Breton saint Winwaloe, whose mother is reputed to have grown a third breast when she had triplets. The village was originally owned by the Penrose family but was eventually sold, mostly to sitting tenants and the National Trust. In the past fishing was important from a shingle beach with the name of Fishing Cove, but this has largely died out. To the west of the church are the Halzephron cliffs (from the Cornish Als Yfferin meaning ‘Cliffs of Hell’), on which the bodies of many shipwrecked seamen and military have been interred. A little to the west of those cliffs is the village of Gunwallow, which was once a fishing village.
Village in the parish are Berepper, Gunwalloe and Chivarloe.

St Germans Church, Cornwall
St Germans Church is built on the site of a Saxon Cathedral. It is believed that St Germans Church takes its name from St Germanus, who was Bishop of Auxerre from 380 to 448. Bishops were recorded here from 931 to 1043. King Athelstan made Conan the first Cornish bishop, until 1043 when the see was transferred to Crediton, and thence to Exeter in 1050
St Germans is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It was 24 hides and belonged to the Church, half to the Canons and half to the Bishop.
The church was rebuilt in 1160 -1170. The West Front between the two towers has a great Norman doorway built of stone from the Tartan Down quarries at Landrake four miles away, which belonged to the Priory. There are windows dating from the Norman building and the late medieval period.
