RP-Artisans has created a vocabulary to talk about great gaming.
This vocabulary begins with five principles, which all great games adhere to, in varying proportions.
Every game mastering tip supports one of these five core principles. Many of them support the Preparation principle. No matter what your opinions are on specific rules or style issues, everyone can agree that these five things are important.
It's up to you to determine what you can do to make sure you excel in these areas - every great game master does so a little differently. There are a lot of hints and tips on how we do it, but you have to find your own path to these goals.
So, please browse and comment on what you see here!
Pursuing any one of these principles to excess is folly. The GM who works for two months on his game, making detailed handouts and props, and then flips when the players immediately divert of his carefully laid track is just as annoying to play with as the one who is a riot, but has to keep pausing the game to read the scenario.
If there is any one thing that you can do to become a better GM, its to put some effort into it, and to treat each game as your chance to help the players have a good time, and receive one in return.
Be open and honest, but not condescending when dealing with your players. Don’t snap at them, but don’t coddle them either. Treat them like your friends, and maybe they will become them!
Whenever you are wondering what is next for you, read back though this document, and pick out something new to work on, it’s a fascinating, endless journey!
