Hearing Problem
" listening , speaking , reading , writing " are communication means of human beings. The impairment of any one of them can affect our life seriously. As a result, if we have hearing problem, we cannot hear what others said clearly which affect our daily life.
Possible etiology of hearing problem:
Effect on communication:
The causes mentioned above affect our hearing ability. It also affect our communication. The degree of hearing impairment is measured by decibel(dB) , It represent the hearing level of the hearing impaired individual. For example, a person with 60 dB hearing loss, means that s/he can only hear sound louder than 60 dB (about the sound from a noisy road).
If you find that your hearing ability is declining, you have to approach Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) doctors. They can refer you to audiologist for further assessment. According to the assessment, audiologist or speech therapist can help you to select some devices (e.g. hearing aid, cochlear implant) to restore your hearing ability. When the hearing impairment has affected communication, speech therapist can provide some therapy for aural rehabilitation.
However, children sometimes cannot tell about their hearing ability accurately. As a result, parents have to pay attention to children's response to sound and speech. If parents have found any doubts, they have to found some professionals ( e.g. doctors, audiologists, speech therapists, etc. ) to give a help.
