Steve played County cricket for Kent, rising through the ranks from Under 12's to a full time contract. He played his first game for Kent 2nd XI when 15 years old. In 1986 he made his 1st XI debut against Sussex, opening the batting against Imran Khan. In 1987 he took his first wicket, David Gower, bowling off spin.
After 4 years on the staff he moved to Derbyshire in 1988, scoring 1000 runs in his first full season and playing in the Benson and Hedges Cup Final at Lords, taking one of the best catches ever seen. In 1990, Steve hit the winning runs to beat Essex in the last match of the Refuge Assurance Sunday League season as Derbyshire won the league for the first time. Two centuries, 127 v Sri Lanka and 100 v Worcestershire were also highlights.
After too many unfortunate injuries, Steve was released and joined Norfolk in 1993. During 11 years he scored over 7200 runs at an average of 44 and took 230 wickets and was involved in a period of Norfolk successes in the championship and one day format.
When the chance came to move to Norfolk in 1996 with his family, Steve started Red Mist Cricket along with Vauxhall Mallards Cricket Club, where he was Vice Chairman, having retired from playing. He started his umpiring career in 2018, he is currently umpiring in the Norfolk Alliance and East Anglian Premier League.
The business has grown every year, offering high class coaching to all ages and abilities, in the best facilities in the area.
