Library's Objectives

Mission

The mission of our school library is to promote the joy of life-long reading and learning.  We do this in three ways.  First, the school community is provided with adequate and ample access to information in a varied method of formats.  The library houses over 17,000 library books, including a wide range of bilingual selections, paperback books and illustrated literature.  Second, our library creates and encourages student participation in reading and information literacy programs.  Reading contests are sponsored throughout the year and our librarian teaches information literacy skills lessons to all English classes on a monthly basis.  Lastly, effective collaboration with teachers ensures that the library supports teaching and becomes an extension of classroom learning as well.   A good example of teacher-librarian collaboration is found under the link titled Collaboration.

Vision

We support our district in its endeavor to graduate students who are skilled in the following four areas.  First, our students will be self-directed learners.  Students will know where to access information and use it efficiently.  Secondly, our students will be culturally empowered community members.  The collection at our library will be balanced and reflective of the demographic and ethnic composition of our community and society.  Thirdly, our students will learn to synthesize information and communicate it effectively.  Lastly, our students will become critical thinkers who will enrich and become enriched in our democratic, pluralistic society.   (Taken from Expected Student Learning Results.  Retrieved on October 2, 2008 from http://www.suhsd.k12.ca.us/Uploads/ESLR_Poster.pdf)
