General Interest
Although many think this song was written about the Ontario chemical industry, it was in fact written about the Billingham Manufacturing Plant, one of the largest and most important chemical works in England.
The plant produced ammonia for fertilizer, as well as colourants, nylon, plastics, and even housed an atomic research facility before the commencement of the Manhattan Project.
The song has been popularized by Canadian folk group Great Big Sea.
