Deep Creek is the Start and Finish of the 100K and 100+ mile. It's also a place for drop bags and rehab for 100+ milers. The runners start and run south to Thousand Trails and return through the area on their way to Maverick Saddle. It should be staffed in the morning until everyone clears Maverick Saddle (about 0730). Because runner drop bags are there, some presence must be maintained through the end of the race. It will need to be staffed again continuously starting about 1600 Saturday through the end of the race.

Runners may stay for a while. Keep track of runner arrival and departure times. Runners should notify the staff if they plan to drop at Deep Creek. Often this decision isn't made immediately. It's important to know if they drop so they aren't expected on later portions of the course. If they choose to take a nap in their tent or vehicle, they should be advised to put their bib numbers outside so they can be located without having to wake them.

There is a 3:00am cut off for arrivals at Deep Creek. If they arrive after that time, they are disqualified and should not be allowed to continue. Only the race directors are allowed to change this.

Deep Creek is a unique checkpoint and hospitality is a goal. The following are staffing priorities for Deep Creek.

  • Check-in runners at start and get the final list to command

  • Keep track of all runners as they finish and potentially start the second loop

  • Greet and encourage all runners as they finish (finishing is a BIG deal)

  • Offer food, water or whatever else they may need. This may involve cooking burgers and not allowing the soup to burn.

  • Ensure finishers exchange their "Plain" entry rock with a "Plain 100" finisher rock (the only get one)

  • Ensure the security of runner drop bags.

Checkpoint Conditions

The checkpoint is along side the road where parking can be limited and dusty with traffic. It is surrounded by trees so there is little direct sunlight until afternoon. The driving route is mostly pavement except for the last mile on Lower Chiwawa River Road. That portion is generally well maintained dirt (dust). Because this is the finish line, bring a camera and prepare to take some pictures.

Communications

Although not far from Command, coverage with a handheld is impractical. A mobile or crossband repeat is recommended to be heard at command. Runners, families and support people are often interested in hearing the radio traffic.
