CANT

CantZ

Cant, a name given by shooters to leaning the rifle sideways at an angle, is a very poorly understood topic.

Shooters are correct to be concerned, especially for long range shooting, and a level is a very good idea.

Contrary to popular belief, canting the rifle, as long as it is constant, has no deleterious effect, but it is important that any level should reference the aiming device thus ensuring elevation tracking is truly vertical. The rifle can lean at any comfortable angle.

This program gives an appreciation of the effect of cant on shots positions on a target.

It ignores many short range parameters and concentrates on very long range effects when target shooting. For example, the height of scope mounting has been ignored because it has small effect at extreme range but a small variation of cant may move your impact point many feet at long range.

Use the program to assess how well the rifle cant should be controlled during a serious competitive shoot and read more on this in the program 'Help' section.

I suggest that you show this program to any shooters who do not appreciate how rifle cant can wreck their shooting. Oy may frighten them sufficiently that they take it more seriously.

You will need to unzip the file after you download it (see arrow on the right).

I suggest that you create a folder called C:\CANT, or somewhere else appropriate, and place the unzipped program there.

Then simply run it.

SETTING SCOPE LEVEL

Illustrates the effect of canting the rifle on the Impact Point at Long Range. I have taken some liberties with the program accuracy at shorter distances but it gives a very good simulation of the effect at very long distances where Riflescope Height and slight decentering of the scope over the rifle is of little consequence. Both shooters and coaches should study this so they may recognize its effect where Variable Cant appears mainly as poor wind reading. If you are going for high X count at long range you MUST have the Cant under total control.

Also included is information on setting riflescope levels. Files can be downloaded by choosing arrows at bottom right.

Unzip and run CantZ.exe. Then read the PDF file.
