Robert came and watched the beginning of the scene today. We were trying to build on the things we'd talked about with Rebecca on Thursday, and Robert's comments helped us build on that too. He had Sara and Kelly sit across from each other at the table and do the part about the quilt as if they were trying to interrogate each other, and it was so much more interesting that way than how they've been doing it. Hopefully they can bring that with them into the scene. Once Robert left we kept working on the beginning to bring that same sense of opposition to it. I think it's helped them be more purposeful about what they're doing and about their characters. In fact, Sara commented that she thought her character was the town gossip, and once she started playing it that way it was like she suddenly had a character.
The scene is much more interesting now, up to the part where they find the birdcage then they slip back into the same things they have been doing. So I need to figure out other exercises like the interrogation thing to have them do for the parts with the birdcage and the bird to help them with the the rest of the scene. I don't know what that will be yet, but I'll have to figure it out, because right now the first page and a half is much more interesting than the rest.
