Beat → The Events
Unit What are they?
- Usually a physical action or new information
- an entrance, an exit, an action (big or small)
- a change occurs that effects everyone present
- can be sudden or gradual
Obstacles → What stops the character from getting what they want → an event introduces a new one/ changes it
often new information
The Event alters what people want.
A play is a series of changes between a group of people.
An event is a change that effects everyone.
A beat = an event (for director)
give them titles

→ organize information about what happens before the play begins → The List
the obvious facts
then a second list of questions, Mitchell's examples are the kinds of questions actors ask
then research answers to the questions
Picturization → the lists start to help with that
begin to solve staging problems
The Cherry Orchard
Environment → a hook, a way to get into the play
- a Southern version?, post- Civil War
Chekov – subtext, Russian subdued society, subtext = discussion of things no one ever talked about
A Moodboard = a collection of images that somehow express the world of the play
