How to Read a Play

• • the playwright is the one we all serve

  • the text is the one thing everyone has in common

  • playwright = fundamental to the process whether living or dead

  • A Play = sum total of everything characters say and everything said about them

  • a play is reflective of human nature, which is completely inconsistent

    • • people can't be exactly pinned down, so neither can characters

  • theatre – ancient Greek roots meaning “the seeing place”

    • • humans – Why do we have theatre? STORIES

  • when is the best time for ideas to hit? Figure it out for yourself and block that time off for “imagination time” as an artist
