The Interference of Sound Waves
- When two or more waves pass through a medium, interference occurs.
Interference of Identical Sound Waves
- With tuning forks, the tines are out of phase.
- This results in 2 nodal lines radiating out from each tine. Therefore, if the tuning fork is rotated, sound intensity increases and decreases.
- When two loud speakers produce sound, they produce an interference pattern.
- The equations developed previously regarding two point source interference apply here.
- As frequency increases l decreases therefore X decreases. This means that as frequency increases the number of nodal and antinodal lines increases (The symmetry is unaffected
- Herschel Tube – A tube for transmission of sound, which can be used to demonstrate interference.
- The length of the paths can be adjusted.
- If the length is adjusted so compression meets compression and rarefaction meets rarefaction, then constructive interference is produced.
- If the length is adjusted so compression meets rarefaction, then destructive interference is produced.
- In auditoriums, sound reflects off of walls and ceilings. In various places, sound is received from different locations. This causes interference, which can produce dead spots.
