KY Champion Tree

The state champion tree was discovered on a historical orchard property in Madison County, KY that operated in the late 1800s -- not very far from the old farmer's market on Water Street. The tree was 28 years old in 2009. The trunk circumference measured a respectable 40 inch (102 cm) at shoulder height. The fruit on this variety is very early and larger than most varieties. The tropical flavor is sweet and mellow. The Richmond Register newspaper covered the champion tree story in 2012. Pictures courtesy of Woody Walker (web-site administrator).
