Freestone Varieties

Three "freestone" pawpaw tree varieties were discovered in 2012 on a restaurant property that was well known for country-style cuisine in the 1950s and 60s. Pawpaw trees were noted on the restaurant property when it was in operation. The restaurant building was torn down but the pawpaw trees remained there along with a persimmon that died in 2014. Fruits average about 250 to 300 grams on these old trees. They are tasty and the texture of the fruits is somewhat chiffon. There is no seed sack -- making the seeds easy to remove. Also, notice that the seeds are quite large and they are unusually shaped.
