Freeze Depth

Young pawpaw trees (asimina triloba) have fragile roots that can be sensitive to freezing cold temperatures where -7C (19F) has been quoted as the limit in pomological literature (*). Mulch protection is recommended for seedlings that are planted where the soil freezes more than 12 inches (1/3 meter) in depth. The two maps presented below show the average annual freeze depths in the USA compared to the pawpaw's native range. The freeze depth map is measured in inches.
