"Marcelino Villanueva was the third child of a couple who lived in Tondo, a poor community in Manila. Al, as his friends called him, was a responsible youth. He did house chores, helped his mother sell fruits, and rarely played in the streets after school.
He graduated salutatorian in grade school and was admitted at the Philippine Science High School. (His older brother was already studying in the same school, making the brothers the first two graduates of their school to enter the highly‑competitive PSHS.)
At the PSHS, Al started joining rallies, particularly those directed against the brewing authoritarianism of the Marcos government. In his third year, he moved to a school closer to home and to his community. There he was recruited into the Samahang Demokratiko ng Kabataan (SDK), a militant student organization, and the Zone One Tondo Organization (ZOTO), a church‑assisted federation of different community organizations."
Testimonials from friends
"Marc Villanueva (Batch 73) was our Uranus classmate in Zero year. He was born in Tondo and was proud of it. Even at that young age he was keenly aware of the plight of the people living in Tondo. He later went on to be one of the leaders of Zone One Tondo Organization (ZOTO), a church‑assisted federation of different community organizations. In one of our class discussions, a derogatory remark was made about Tondo. He stood up and defended his hometown saying ' ...kahit ang Tondo man ay may langit din'. It was from this statement that the novel of Andres Cristobal, of the same title, became a suggested reading for our class."
