Lorenzo Bonifacio Celi Lansang
"Nik"
PSHS Batch 1974 (1st and 2nd year)
Birth: October 11, 1957
Place: PGH, Manila
Death: February 18, 1976
Place: Mauban, Quezon
According to an email from Risa, his sister, "Nik" was short for Sputnik, the satellite launched in Oct. 4, 1957, a few days before he was born on Oct 11. Nik was named Lorenzo Bonifacio, after Tañada and Andres.
Teodosio Lansang, the youngest of Nik's paternal uncles, was detained after the writ of habeas corpus was suspended, and was subsequently one of those involved in filing petitions against this. He also authored an autobiography, "In Summing Up: A Personal and Political History," published posthumously.
"...On graduation from grade school, he had the best academic record in the history of the UP Elementary School and he was awarded “with highest honors,” the only time ever that the school had given this award.
When he entered the Philippine Science High School in 1970, his political involvement deepened, especially after he joined the Samahang Demokratiko ng Kabataan (SDK). When Marcos suspended the writ of habeas corpus in 1971, Nik went even more deeply into organizing of fellow high school students toward a broad anti-fascist front. He left school by his second year, becoming a fulltime youth and community organizer, living in a very poor section of Tondo in Manila, having been “adopted” into the home of one of the poor families.
...Nik and three of his comrades, including one pregnant woman, was killed in 1976 during a military raid conducted by constabulary forces of the martial law regime in Barangay Casiay in Mauban. Nik was 19 years old."
Testimonials from friends
"Nick Lansang was the UP Elementary valedictorian when he entered PSHS in 1970. In his first year, he headed the SDK chapter I think ! I met him with Ramon Perdon in one of the pre-martial law rallies summertime of 1971' after I knew I passed the entrance exams, and right there I joined the SDK PSHS chapter ( also known as SDK MPPA - mataas na paaralan ng Pilipinas sa Agham). Originally I was with SDK Marikina summertime of 1971, prior to that salimpusa sa KM ATeneo when I was in grade school during the First Quarter Storm ( grade 7).
... on his 2nd year before martial law he voluntarily left PSHS to join the SDK National Council headed by PSHS first batch valedictorian Rey Vea (now President of Mapua Instite of Technology). Nick (Lorenzo) was killed by soldiers during martial law, and is listed in the Bantayog ng mga Bayani near PSHS."
