At 7:17 AM on the morning of June 30, 1908, a mysterious explosion occurred in the skies over Siberia. It was caused by the impact and breakup of a large meteorite, at an altitude roughly six kilometers in the atmosphere. Realistic pictures of the event are unavailable. However, Russian scientists collected eyewitness accounts of the event. I believe that we now know enough about large impacts to "decode" the subjective descriptions of the witnesses and create realistic views of this historic asteroid impact as seen from different distances.

George Carey uncovers the mystery behind the massive explosion that shook Tunguska, Siberia in 1908 which has been variously attributed to a meteorite and a crashed UFO.

Here's some blurb I found [amongst others] on the Channel 4 feedback page which I thought was an interesting summary of the documentary's approach.

"I don't think the documentary was as bad as people are making out. I can however see that George Carey's style clashed a bit with a 'serious' take on the topic - not that he made light of it, more that he seemed to mistake keeping a cynical distance for some kind of objective reporting.

What was great was the coverage of the 'space ship' and extra-terrestrial theories when the crew went to see the museum academic. Despite what the majority would have you believe - some sort of ET involvement is actually supported by a major researcher for the Russian govt - Valery Uvarov who claims to have found an ET created defence system in the region against celestial bodies. Even when the museum professor showed Carey a lot of evidence and ended with footage of a UFO over the Tunguska area, he still refused to engage with this idea and preferred to comment on how strange it felt to be being told about this with the local Russian official being present. I found this a problematic approach - Tunguska is a weird, contradictory event and thus all ideas have to be valid for consideration.

A lot more time was spent on the meteor theories and I liked the way it was pointed out that each time scientists found themselves on the way to 'proof' something happened to stop their research dead. The problems others have with Carey focusing more on the weird people in the region than "the science" - i don't see as a major issue - both for the reason above and because this wasn't billed as a formal science documentary. The people he met mirrored the 1908 event in many ways.

It should be noted there is another theory that Carey didn't locate. It involved the finding of Tibetan scripts by a British explorer [who did exist] and subsequent trip to the remote region with this information by a European group who were said to have set off a nuclear event with the scroll information. The Tunguska event was a large explosion, caused by an asteroid or comet, which occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, at about 07:14 on June 30, 1908. The explosion occurred at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) at 60.886°N, 101.894°E. It is classified as an impact event even though the object is believed to have burst in the air rather than hit the surface. Different studies have yielded widely varying estimates of the impacting object's size, on the order of 60 m (200 ft) to 190 m (620 ft). It is the largest impact event on Earth in recorded history.

The Tunguska event occurred around 7:00 a.m. local time on June 30, 1908 near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in Siberia. Witnesses saw a “blue-ish light, nearly as bright as the Sun, moving across the sky.” What followed was an estimated 15 megaton explosion which knocked over about 80 million trees in about a 1300 square mile area, forming a butterfly shape pattern. This also sent a shock wave throughout parts of Europe and Asia, registering as far away as England (about 4000 miles away). Further, the atmospheric pressure change was also significant enough to be measured all the way in Great Britain. Another interesting side effect of this blast was that, for several days after the blast throughout most of Asia and Europe, the night sky glowed. It was so bright that people as far away as China reportedly were able to read in the middle of the night by nothing but the glow of the sky.

The Tunguska River, Russia. at 7 14 in the morning on June the 30th 1908, an mysterious, unexplained and deadly event occurred.

during which, there was an enormous explosion. It has been estimated that the explosion was equal to more than 2,000 Hiroshima atom bombs, and for over a hundred years, no one has been able to figure out what caused it.

At around breakfast time mr Semenov was sitting outside his house at Vanavara Trading Post, about 40 miles south of the edge of the explosion, he recalls the event, suddenly seeing directly to the north, over Onkoul's Tunguska Road, the sky split in two. fire appeared high and wide over the forest. the split in the sky grew larger, and the entire northern side was covered with fire. At that moment, I became so hot that I couldn't bear it, as if my shirt was on fire. from the northern side, where the fire was, came strong heat, I wanted to tear off my shirt and throw it down, but then the sky shut closed, and a strong boom sounded, I was thrown a few metres. I lost my senses for a moment, then my wife ran out and led me to the house. After that such noise came, as if rocks were falling or cannons were firing, the earth shook, and when I was on the ground, I pressed my head down, fearing rocks would land on me. When the sky opened up, hot wind raced between the houses, which left traces in the ground like pathways, and it damaged the crops.

this witness testimony was recorded in 1930 by Leonid Kulik's expedition.

Although for many years scientists thought it was probably a meteor, the lack of evidence has led to numerous speculations ranging from UFO’s to black holes. to this day, no one knows for sure what caused the explosion. During the explosion the fireball that ensued, witnessed by the handful of terrified, distant onlookers, a fireball witnessed as falling from the sky, was later estimated to have been many miles wide.

What caused the Tunguska explosion? And most importantly what is buried at the epicentre of the event, or what was left on the earth. whatever it is, for the past 100 years the only vegetation capable of surviving the locations environment is grass.

The sheer force of the event destroyed trees far and wide, near ground zero damages were similar to those registered during atmospheric nuclear tests in the 1950s and 1960s. The trees directly below the explosion were stripped of their bark and snapped flat, while trees farther away were knocked over and uprooted.

Interestingly, the explosions pattern was in the shape of a butterfly.

The Tunguska event is the largest impact event ever recorded on earth.

Studies have yielded different estimates of the objects size, depending on whether the body was a comet, a denser asteroid, or something else entirely.

a team of researchers published analysis results of micro-samples from a peat bog near the centre of the affected area showing fragments that may be of meteorologic origin.

whether these fragments have been found to contain alien pollutants, has not been disclosed, but the physical evidence at the site would suggest a hostile chemical was released during the event, which even after a hundred years is still having a drastic effect on the landscape.

It is estimated that the Tunguska explosion knocked down some 80 million trees over an area of 2,150 square kilometres, and that the shock wave from the blast would have measured 5.0 on the Richter magnitude scale.

Whatever it was, this thing was BIG, also, there is clearly something that still remains at the location, and it isn’t friendly to life.
