Alien Planet
Published on Apr 23, 2012
The CGI or computer animated drama/documentary takes place on Darwin IV, a planet 6.5 light years from earth, with 2 suns and 60% of Earth's gravity. Having identified Darwin as a world that could support life, Earth sends a pilot mission consisting of the Mothership Von Braun and three probes: Balboa, Da Vinci, and Newton. This robotic fleet is responsible for finding and assessing any life forms on Darwin IV. Initially, the expectation is to find microscopic life, but the probes soon find themselves in the middle of a developed ecosystem teeming with diversity of life of all sizes. The drama on Darwin IV is motivated by real science missions, such as the NASA Origins Program and the NASA / JPL Planet-Finder Mission, as well as the European Space Agency's Darwin Project. "Alien Planet " is a cosmic expedition along side Stephen Hawking, Michio Kaku, Jack Horner, Craig Venter, and George Lucas...

Solar System Video
Published on Oct 5, 2012
Solar System Video showing the 8 planets of the Solar System orbiting the Sun. As we move out from Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars, towards the gas giant planets of the outer Solar System, each of the planets take longer to orbit the sun.
The planets in order of size are;
Mercury
Mars
Venus
Earth
Neptune
Uranus
Saturn
Jupiter
When listed in terms of distance from the Sun, the order is as follows;
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune.
All of the planets orbit the Sun in an anti-clockwise direction. Most also rotate on their axis in an anti-clockwise direction. The exceptions to this rule are;
Uranus - Which rotates on it's end like a bowling ball
Venus - Which rotates clockwise, but very slowly.
Venus rotates so slowly that a day on planet Venus is longer than a year!
The planet with the fastest rotation in Jupiter, which rotates every 10 hours. So fast that it causes the planet to flatten out a little.
In this Solar System video, the distance between the planets is not to scale. In the real Solar System the distances are vast.
The size of the planets in this Solar System video is also just an indication of their relative size. In reality Jupiter is many more times the size of the Earth.
The planets would also not create shadows on each other as they do in this video.
Other bodies that exist in the Solar System but are not included in this Solar System video include, The Dwarf Planets (of which Pluto is one), The asteroid belt (which sits between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter), and the Ort Cloud (which sits beyond the orbit of Neptune)
I hope you find this Solar System useful. Feel free to use it for educational purposes in your classroom when teaching kids about the Solar System.

What Is The Kuiper Belt?
Published on Dec 30, 2013
After years of searching, Clyde Tombaugh discovered tiny Pluto on February 18th, 1930, Little did he realize this was just one icy object in a vast belt of material known as the Kuiper Belt.
Mike Brown explains, "The Kuiper Belt is a collection of bodies outside the orbit of Neptune that, if nothing else had happened, if Neptune hadn't formed or if things had gone a little bit better, maybe they could have gotten together themselves and formed the next planet out beyond Neptune. But instead, in the history of the solar system, when Neptune formed it led to these objects not being able to get together, so it's just this belt of material out beyond Neptune."
After Tombaugh's discovery, other astronomers guessed that Pluto wasn't alone and there would be more planets to discover in the outer Solar System. But nothing turned up for decades.
Back in 1951, the Dutch astronomer Gerard Kuiper proposed that out beyond Neptune, material was spaced too far apart to form into a single large planet. Instead, he predicted that there would only be a small collection of icy objects. Occasionally one of these objects would wander into the inner Solar System and become a comet.
The idea of this "Kuiper Belt" made sense to astronomers, and it helped explain why there were no large planets further out in the Solar System.
It also conveniently wrapped up another mystery of the Solar System: where do comets come from? Astronomers assumed these objects were out there, but they had no evidence of anything other than Pluto. A few icy objects were found between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, but nothing out past Neptune.
After searching the region for five years, and using the latest in telescope technology, astronomers David Jewitt and Jane Luu finally confirmed the existence of the Kuiper Belt in 1992.
They found a tiny object, a fraction of the size of Pluto, and the techniques they used unlocked an icy land rush. Six months later, the next object was found. And many more came after that.
Fortunately for us, Kuiper was wrong, and the belt hadn't been cleared out billions of years ago.
It's still a busy place. There have been more than a thousand objects discovered, and it's theorized that there are as many as 100,000 objects larger than 100 km in diameter.
One part Kuiper was definitely right about is that these objects won't last forever.
Mike Brown continues, "We call it a belt, but it's a very wide belt. It's something like 45 degrees in extent across the sky - this big swath of material that's just been churned and churned by Neptune. And these days, instead of making a bigger and bigger body, they're just colliding and slowly grinding down into dust. If we come back in another hundred million years, there'll be no Kuiper Belt left."
Keeping Pluto company out in the Kuiper belt, are many other objects worthy of mention: Quaoar, Makemake, Haumea, Orcus and Eris are all large icy bodies in the Belt. Several of them even have moons of their own. These are all tremendously far away, and yet, very much within reach.
NASA's New Horizons spacecraft will reach this region in 2015, and capture the first ever close up pictures of a Kuiper Belt object, images of the surface of Pluto.
Even more exciting for ancient ice-rock enthusiasts, it looks like our Solar System isn't unique. There have been icy debris belts - other Kuiper Belts - discovered around nine other star systems. There are narrow ones, like our own Solar System, and then wider belts extending much further out. Infrared surveys suggest that at many as 20% of star systems have one of their own.
Vast and unexplored, the Kuiper belt is the source of many comets, and contains ancient ice that was formed at the beginning of the Solar System. Let's hope New Horizons is just the beginning of future decades of research into this mysterious region.

Universe: Beyond the Millennium - Alien Life
Published on Mar 21, 2014
"Universe: Beyond the Millennium" is a television series observing astronomical phenomena, research, and theories on the universe and its origins.
Narrated by John Hurt.
The documentary premiered in 1999 and presents an overview of the universe as humans understood it at that time, and how we think it will evolve in the next millennium. Using 3D computer generated graphics, the series features animated sequences that offer insight into the Big Bang theory and the anatomy of the sun.
"Alien Life", when NASA scientists found a lump of rock from Mars with microscopic fossils in it, the search for extraterrestrial life beyond our own became a credible objective. Researchers and scientists from SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) have spent decades trying to determine how an alien life force would contact us and if one does, how we would reply.
At the start of a new millennium we're about to embark on the greatest adventure of all time. Five hundred million miles from Earth, a spacecraft will land on Jupiter's icy moon, Europa. It's mission, to search for alien life. As we reach out across the galaxy, our spacecraft will explore the most extreme environments to answer the ultimate question, are we alone?

Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare...
This spectacular five-part documentary series, presented by Tony Robinson, investigates the history of natural disasters, from the planet's beginnings to the present, putting a new perspective on our existence and suggesting that we are the product of catastrophe.
99% of all the creatures that have ever lived, no longer exist. They were wiped-out in a series of global catastrophes. Each disaster changed the course of evolution on earth. Without them mankind, nor any of the life we see around us, would be here today. For out of catastrophe comes rebirth. Evolution is a savage, imperfect and violent process. It's survive or perish. The earth's history of catastrophes has both moulded the planet and determined evolution. For each disaster led to another leap forward on the evolutionary trail form single celled bacteria to humankind itself.
Episode 1 - Birth of the Planet
The first programme tells the story of Earth's difficult birth, and how the formation of our moon set us on a unique course to being a planet ripe for life. Glowing peacefully in the night sky, it is difficult to imagine that the moon was actually born from one of the most violent and potentially devastating events in history. Four and half billion years ago, in the chaos of the early solar system, a Mars-sized planet smashed into our young Earth with such force that it sent rock debris hurtling out into space. This was how the moon was formed. The first film of the Catastrophe series explores the role of the moon in creating the calm atmosphere on Earth that would eventually allow life to take hold.

Episode 2 - Snowball Earth
This programme delves into a world lying beneath a frozen surface. It is the greatest climate disaster ever to have hit Earth. 650 million years ago, a cataclysmic ice age sealed the entire planet beneath ice and snow, almost destroying life and turning the world into one huge snowball.
Snowball Earth uncovers the story behind one of the most controversial theories in science today. To investigate, the programme travels the world to follow scientists scouring southern Australia, Nevada's Death Valley and Alaskan glaciers for tantalising clues as to how our planet ran away into this doomsday scenario. The results could improve understanding of evolution and survival of life.

Episode 3 - Planet of Fire
250 million years ago, 95% of life was wiped off the face of Earth in the biggest extinction event ever. But what was responsible? Back then, our planet was a very different place. Millions of years before the era of dinosaurs, creatures such as Dicynodonts and Gorgonopsians roamed the land, while the oceans too teemed with life. Then, in the blink of a geological eye, everything changed. Life itself was almost completely wiped out in what is known as the Permian extinction. Travelling to locations such as South Africa, California, and Iceland, the experts discover that the volcanic activity of the Siberian Traps led to the release of deadly gases from beneath the sea and rises in Earth's temperature. This turbocharged global warming brought drought and a breakdown in the food cycle, with even the strongest animals eventually succumbing to the conditions.

Dinosaurs rose up as rulers of Earth around 230 million years ago, eventually dominating all other species and relegating mammals to the shadows. But 65 million years ago their planet was rocked by yet another massive event when, seemingly out of nowhere, the mighty dinosaurs were wiped off the face of Earth. But without this devastating catastrophe, humans would not be here today.
This film explores the trail of clues that lead to what extinguished the dinosaurs and ultimately led to the evolution of humans. Cutting-edge scientists, palaeontologists and geologists investigate what could be responsible, and chart the story behind the widely held theory that Earth was hit once again by a deadly asteroid.

Episode 5 - Survival Earth
So far, humans have been lucky not to have experienced catastrophes on a global scale, like those that have extinguished 99% of all other species. Humans have come to reside as the most powerful species on this planet, but it is easy to forget that the forces that wiped out many of our ancestors are still at work. In this final programme, Catastrophe maps out key events over the last 75,000 years. During that time humans were subjected to a super-volcano that nearly devastated whole regions of Earth. The ensuing ice age that covered Europe with ice sheets many kilometres thick is said to have thwarted the development of complex civilisation, and the cosmic catastrophe that followed is believed to have changed life forever for the early inhabitants of North America.

Is there an alien-built megastructure around this faraway star?
Published on Oct 4, 2016
Something massive, with roughly one thousand times the area of Earth, is blocking the light coming from a star about 1400 light years away, and nobody is quite sure what it is. Without a natural explanation, even the world’s most reputable astrophysicists have been forced to consider the possibility of an alien-built megastructure around star KIC 8462852, also known as ‘Tabby’s Star’ or the WTF star. Such an extraordinary idea would, of course, require extraordinary evidence, which is exactly what we’re in search of as we turn our eyes and telescopes towards this perplexing celestial object. #ABCcatalyst

Outward Bound: Colonizing Mars
Published on Aug 17, 2017
We begin the new Outward Bound series by discussing the Colonization of Mars, and survey all the colonizing and terraforming options from the early settlement days to the far future and a Green Mars.
We will also look at alternatives to terraforming which might make more sense for Mars, like bioforming the people to the environment, rather than terraforming it to our environment.

Ringworlds are a type of megastructure that engulf an entire star, first popularized in Larry Niven's classic novel Ringworld. These constructs a million times larger than Earth have captivated minds for nearly half a century but been considered impossible to build under known science. Today, we will attempt to show otherwise.

Classroom Aid - Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud
Published on Nov 10, 2017
Text at http://howfarawayisit.com/documents/
In this segment of our video book, we cover the Sentinels of the Heliosphere fleet; the distance to the edge of our Sun’s solar wind; the Aurora Borealis, Comets, the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud.
We start by defining the limits of the Sun’s influence, including the Termination Shock, Heliopause, Heliosheath, and the Bow Shock. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 progress is reviewed.
Next, we cover the near-Earth fleet of satellites Hinode, RHESSI, TRACE, and FAST; the Magnetosphere satellites Cluster 1 through 4 plus Geotail; the Sun observers Stereo A and Stereo B; the solar wind observers orbiting Lagrange Point 1 – ACE, Wind, and SOHO; and back to the Magnetosphere with THEMIS A through E; and back again to Voyager 1 and 2. We conclude with a look at the big November 2011 solar storm observed by Stereo.
We then cover the nature of the aurora Borealis and aurora Australis. This includes the Bohr atomic model where we explain the quantum jumps in high altitude Oxygen atoms that create photons.
Next we cover what a comet is and the history of comets including the Great Comet of 1577 studied by Tyco Brahe and the many comets that became Halley’s Comet. We then examine comet orbits including the long period comets Siding Spring, Hale-Bopp and Lovejoy 2014, and the short period comets 67P, Encke and Halley’s Comet.
These two kinds of comet orbits along with evaporating comets leads us to the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud as areas that generate new comets. We end the segment on comets with a look at Shoemaker Levy crashing into Jupiter and the Rosetta Mission to 67P.
We conclude with a review of the Solar System distances we have covered in this and the previous segments.

THE EXOPLANET PROXIMA CENTAURI b (English Version)
Published on Mar 1, 2018
Proxima centauri is the closest star in the Solar System: 4.22 Light Years. It is a red dwarf star much smaller and much weaker than the Sun which is part of the Alpha Centauri star system, consisting of 3 gravitazionally related stars: Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B with Sun-like mass and diameter, and the red dwarf Proxima Centauri; in fact this star is also called Alpha Centauri C. On August 24, 2016 the ESO (European Southern Observatory) announced the discovery of a planet of the Earth type orbiting Proxima Centauri. The planet has been discovered through the gravitational perturbations that it induces on its star that translate in regular movements towards the red and towards the blue in the stellar spectrum. The instrument used was the ESA HARPS spectrograph. With this method it is not possible to identify the presence of the atmosphere, let alone its composition, but the orbital parameters and the dimensions of the planet are known. Proxima Centauri b, has a mass of 1.27 land masses (27% more than the Earth) and an estimated diameter of about 14.000 Km, 10% more than the Earth's diameter (12.756 Km).Proxima b has a greater mass of the Earth that makes a dense atmosphere probable, moreover the planet is orbiting in the habitable zone of the system, that is to say at the right distance from the star in order to have liquid water on the surface. The stellar flow that the planet receives is 0.66, which is 34% less than what the Earth receives from the Sun. The planetary equilibrium temperature calculated based on the distance from the star, based on the stellar flow and based on albedo (surface reflectivity) of 0.3, is -39 ° C, while the Earth has an equilibrium temperature of -18 ° C.The equilibrium temperature does not take into consideration the atmosphere that when present is crucial, in fact the Earth has a real average temperature of + 16 ° C. The atmosphere with its greenhouse effect, raises the equilibrium temperature, so the same result is to be assumed for the planet Proxima Centauri b that if it has a more dense atmosphere than the Earth, as probable, it would be able to generate a sufficient greenhouse effect to significantly raise its equilibrium temperature.
The Earth similarity index is 0.87 (Earth 1, Mars 0.799) and occupies the 4th place among the most similar exoplanets to Earth.
The planet has a fairly eccentric orbit, which could prevent its synchronization; in short, it should not always show the same face to its star, as happens with the planets closest to its own sun.
By lying in the habitable zone, liquid water on the surface can not be excluded; its presence or not depends heavily on the environmental conditions, atmospheric composition, on the magnitude of the greenhouse effect, on the orbit's synchronicity and on many local and global variables, all of which are currently unknown.
First of all it will be very important to determine the atmospheric composition, the task of the new generation telescopes such as the European Extremely Large Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope and the Tirty Meter Telescope.

Today we will begin our look at the spaceships we might use for colonizing interstellar space in the future. In order to cover the vast distances between even the nearest stars in our galaxy within the boundaries of known physics, we need vessels able to voyage at high speeds for very long periods of time while carrying everything they need to colonize another solar system, a concept typically known as a space ark or generation ship. We will explore the challenges and options for such a vessel, as well as some alternative approaches to the problem.

Beaming energy down from satellites in orbit to replace the production of electricity on Earth may solve many of our problems, and avoid a potential economic or ecological crisis such as energy bottlenecks or global warming. Today we will explore how wireless microwave transmission of energy down to rectennas may not only be possible, but could be massively profitable in the near future and spur our exploration and colonization of space.

A continued look at Generation Ships and Interstellar Colonization.
Check out Cheddar's video on the Sun: https://chdr.tv/youtue6886
In order to colonize the galaxy, we are going to have to spend huge times on board equally huge spaceships. To move thousands of people, and our ecosystem, to distant planets, will require not only giant ark-like starships, but entire fleets of them. Today we will examine how we could do this even if physics never offers us any superior methods in the future for covering the void of interstellar space faster.

The Million Year Ark

A Journey to the Edge of Time and Space
Visit our sponsor, Brilliant: https://brilliant.org/IsaacArthur/
As we continue our look at Generation Ships, vast vessels designed to carry many thousands of colonists to distant and alien worlds centuries away, we must ask just how far and how long such ships can be made to last? Can space ships be made that will endure even longer voyages of thousands or even millions of years in the void of interstellar or even intergalactic space? Will ships, and their crews, fall apart or turn into Cargo Cults who no longer remember how their technology functions or what their mission was?

The Galaxy is an enormous place, and moving from your planet to worlds in a different solar system over vast interstellar distances will be no easy voyage. Today we'll consider how someone would go about hitchhiking around on spaceships, as a tribute to Sci-fi's master of humor, Douglas Adams.

Interstellar travel is very time consuming, moving from star to star, but perhaps we could use stars themselves as spaceships, and move whole solar systems or even galaxies.
Today we'll look at how to use Shkadov Thrusters, novas, supernovae, black holes and quasars to move through space, literal starships.

Earth has often been compared to a spaceship, one that's successfully orbited our star and the galaxy many times over billions of years. So what about moving our planet or even converting it or another world into a spaceship? Can we use entire planets to cross the intergalactic void to settle planets in distant galaxies or superclusters? And what sort of engine and drive could move a whole planet?

Fears about technology and it's impact on our civilization, or on individuals even when new tech is net benefit, are often shown to us in fiction as giving rise to technophobic cultures that abandon science. Today we'll take a look at such concerns and if they might be common or rare, rogue examples. Or if, counter-intuitively, they benefit us in settling the galaxy in the future.

Alien Invasions have been a staple of science fiction for years, with motherships and UFOs assaulting Earth, but how realistic is such a thing? We'll take a look at what might motivate an attack, how it might happen, what alternatives might make more sense, and what might prevent extraterrestrials from trying.

Why Intelligent Life in the Universe May Be Hidden with Isaac Arthur
Premiered Aug 8, 2019
Does intelligent alien life exist?
Answering the question of are we alone has turned out to be a bit more difficult than was originally envisioned when SETI first began decades ago. At first it was a matter of looking for giant omnidirectional beacons blasting out high energy messages, much like what we saw in the movie contact. But as we’ve gone through the process of searching, it’s becoming evident that such a scenario was in a way wishful thinking.
We have seen no such unambiguous beacons, and thinking on just why a civilization would expend massive amounts of energy on a signal has changed. It's very likely to be far more subtle than that, and that any intentional message would be beamed directly at us. But beacons aren’t the only game in town. Since the advent of SETI, other technosignatures beyond radio have been thought of. Now we can look for laser emissions, industrial chemicals in the atmospheres of exoplanets, Dyson swarms, and a host of other signatures that would tell us if there are alien civilizations out there.
Where is intelligent life in the universe?
John is joined with Isaac Arthur to discuss the Fermi paradox, to try and answer where all of the intelligent life is in the universe, and look at what possible techno signatures are most likely. Dyson spheres and Dyson swarms, von neumann probes, and machine civilizations.
Is it all just a Simulation? with Isaac Arthur:

Aliens - Aloof Aliens

Discussion of advanced extraterrestrial civilizations often hinges on the idea that they may have ascended to a higher state or higher level of reality, and lost interest in us and the rest of the galaxy. While we can't know what technologies or enlightened paths they might have available, we can ask how realistic the portrayals of those aliens might be, and if this notion make sense as a Fermi Paradox solution.
