If the building had a heart it would be here. Not just the for its central location but because it is the original high school's front and foundation, at the bottom of the original bell tower.
The above photo is of the northwest corner of the gym, the foundation of which was the northwest corner of the 1870's high school (see photo below). In fact the lentil and frame of a side basement window is now visible on the right of the current photo - that window was partially in a well because of the upward sloping 4th Street. The foundation where the 1870's school entrance jutted out toward cottage street is visible on the left of the current photo.
You can see a large chunk of the wooden gym floor now tilted vertically. I can almost hear the moronic judges telling me that a project about statistics and probability had no place at the school's Science Fair.
