My background:

As of July 1, 2007, I started as an Assistant Professor position at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Biology. In 2012, I was promoted to Associate Professor. My focus is on microbial ecology of aquatic, terrestrial, and host-associated environments.

I earned my BSc and MSc at McGill University, my PhD at the University of British Columbia, and my postdoc was at the University of Warwick (UK).

What I teach:

Every Fall, I teach Biol240 (Fundamentals of Microbiology). This course has ~900 students across two sections.

Although I have developed and taught Biol466 (Biogeochemical Microbiology) for several years, this course has been retired now in order to allow me to adopt Microbial Ecology.

I will begin teaching Biol346 (Microbial Ecology) every winter beginning in 2016. This will be a lecture/lab course and I am very excited about this new opportunity.

Why I'm an oCUBEist:

I love research, and teaching, and often feel most at home in the classroom with my students.

Although I have learned what I know about teaching through trial and error, and by experimentation, I am thrilled by opportunities to watch others teach or to discuss teaching with other educators. oCUBE is the perfect opportunity to foster a local community of educators committed to enriching their in-class experience.

New to oCUBE, I look forward to its potential impact on my teaching skills. In addition, I look forward to offering my own insights and leadership to this group.

Teaching recognition

My teaching has been recognized by the Professor Jack Carlson Teaching Excellence Award (Department of Biology; 2013), the Excellence in Science Teaching Award (Faculty of Science; 2014), the Federation of Students (FEDS) Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award (University; 2014), the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) Award for Teaching Excellence (Ontario; 2014), and Waterloo Region’s Top 40 under 40 award (primarily for teaching contributions; 2013).
