THE EARLY DAYS OF PHANTOM LAKE

THEN AND NOW

<< 6 of 6

Yes, Flin Flon's first golf course. A few holes were constructed on the tailings on the west side of the plant This gave the employees in the 1940's an opportunity to swing a golf club and hit a ball.

In the early 1950's Phantom Lake Golf Course became a reality of 9 holes which offered a reasonably good challenge. In the past few years the operation of members and the efforts of Pros with good business skills and the efforts of an excellent grounds keeper has made the course an environment that all members are proud of.

This image goes back to the early 1950's where the clubhouse was not totally completed ,as you can see the fireplace and chimney on the west end , standing there alone until the roof was extended to meet the chimney, which today is the Phantom Lake Lounge.

The putting green out in front of the Clubhouse at Phantom Lake where the members tune their putting skills.

This image shows the same putting green in the fall and is one of the most beautiful times on any golf course. There is getting to be a great number of benches being purchased by families and being placed on numerous locations on all the nine holes in honour of members who have passed.

This photo was taken in the 1970's of the present Clubhouse. There has not been a great deal of change to the outer structure. The lounge has been upgraded from the photo which you will see below. It now has rug on the floor, new tables and chairs, and presents a homey atmosphere.

This shows the Club room in the 1970's and has been upgraded as explained in the photo above.

This image shows the old Pro shop with Ruth Boivin behind the counter waiting on a customer. This building is now used for club storage and the new Pro shop is about 40 ft. north of this which is larger and a relatively new structure.

Ruth Boivin teeing of No. 1 tee in the late 1970's. The trees between No. 1 and No. 9 had not been planted for too long.

This image is looking across No. 9 again in the late 1970's. The condition of the course has improved a great deal since those days. They have improved the drainage and grounds keeping skills.

This view from No. 1 tee box shows how the trees have grown, and No. 1 green at the far end.

This is a view of No. 1 green and the pond called Paulette on No. 9 and if you go in here, you buy coffee automatically.

This view is from the new elevated tee box on No. 4 fairway which has been a nice improvement visually and also offers an additional challenge. There also has been a great deal of work done on establishing regular cart paths. In the past years, the membership is growing older and the use of carts is more popular so the older boys can play longer.

This view was taken in 2012 showing No. 9 green in the late evening.

The limestone markers with the granite plaques certainly has added a nice touch to the Phantom Lake course. I hope to post more markers and more views of the course on this site in the near future.

The soccer field is a new addition to Phantom Lake which still brings a few kids back to participate in a growing sport. This field is located northwest of the one time big flowerbed which doesn't exist anymore. This is nice to see and a good facility that will help keep some activity at Phantom Lake.

This image was taken August 19, 2014 in the morning. The remains of all the old swings and merry go round have been removed from the beach which makes the area cleaner looking and safer for all, but more memories have been hauled away.

This image was taken August 19, 2014 as well showing some of the reminants of the swings, flagpoles and other items ready to be hauled away which will make this area easier to maintain and preserve it in a clean and neat manner.

This image shows where the Canoe Club once existed. Many individuals who were involved with canoeing will likely have many memories of pushing off from this shore and paddling down Phantom Lake.

This image shows the area which at one time housed the tennis court north of the main pavilion. As I remember this was the court that was occupied by the better players. Today the fence has been removed and the area serves as a parking lot for golfers who have picked their cart up and are out on the course.

These 3 ladies, Aimee Deans, Brenda Russell & Heather Chrupalo have spent most of their working lifetime on the recreational scene in the Flin Flon community. Great to see them enjoying a round of golf and also honoring a bench placed on No. 6 tee box honoring Brenda's father Ken Reader, long time member of the Phantom Lake golf course.

In closing off this page, I would like to express my views pertaining to the history of Phantom Lake, there is the odd image which are missing names and you as a reader of my sight can assist me in finding the names and I would be only to glad to insert and make changes. I hope to add a few more images to this site in the near future so your comments and opinions would be very helpful. I would also like to express my thanks to the Flin Flon history compiled by Hedman, Yauck and Henderson and also Flin Flon Visual History compiled by Jarvis, Burke and Henderson in 1983.
