This was the celebration held July 1, 1977 which was the birthday celebration for the City of Flin Flon with the Anglican Minister Rev. Clem McFadden.

Here is the main stage where many July 1st activities were organized and directed from.

This shows an area of the main beach, a sandbox housing one of the small boats which was used by life guards when the beach was active and being used every day.

This image shows a July 1st celebration showing activities such as crown & anchor and the milk bottles which sat on a rubber tire and you got 3 balls for 25 cents, if you knocked them down and out of the tire, you were a lucky winner of a cocoanut, drank the milk from the cocoanut then busted it and shared it with your friends.

Phantom Lake day July 1st usually was organized by the voice and direction of F. L. Jobin (better known to all of us as Bud). I believe he will go down in history as being one of the most outstanding community leaders in Flin Flon and went on to be appointed Manitoba's 18th Governor General.

July 1st celebrations began around 1 p.m., the Legion with their Honor Guard and the Flin Flon School Band under the direction of L. A. Halldorson. The raising of the flag by the Honor Guard and Oh Canada being played by the School Band.

July 1st celebrations was always a big event. There was always something that involved all ages, swimming, horseshoe tournament, bingo, races for the kids and the gold rush canoe derby. The start of the lap for the day and the finish was always one of the daily highlights held at Phantom Lake.

This is the Legion Pipeband piping all participating canoe teams to the starting line.

Here are all teams lowering canoes into Phantom Lake and preparing to line up at the starting line.

This image displays the starting line of the Gold Rush Canoe Derby waiting for the sound of the gun.

Yes, they're off.

They are well on their way and all will be patiently waiting for their return.

Yes, Gib McEachern and Norm Crerar, Flin Flon local favorites cross the finish line with a comfortable lead.

Many a student who attendant Hapnot Collegiate were part of the outdoor program conducted by John Belfry. I think the youth in our community received alot of good training in water safety and the handling of a canoe. Hapnot was very fortunate to have a program offered by an individual that loved the outdoors and shared his experience and talent with all. Great job John, thank you. This was great experience for youth in a very controlled environment so they had some knowledge on how to deal with a problem when it should arise.

Getting some physical exercise in an outdoor environment. I am sure there are many young people have fond memories of these experiences.

This was also a great opportunity for young girls to learn how to handle a canoe.

Great outdoor activity for all.
