Winter Veteran's League Tennis - 'Flukes' Results
Results to date: Played 25: Won 11; Drawn 10 (of which 5 were cancellations due to poor weather); Lost 4.
Captain's View: The team has done particularly well this season with one match left to play. We have been unbeaten since October including victories over Slyne Badgers and Bowerham who have won the league in the last two seasons, and over Heversham for the first time in 10 years. Unfortunately we won't be in line to win the league as most victories have been 5-3.
Thanks to the team players: Dot Davies, Jo, Kath, Melissa, Sarah, Bill, Dave Rees, Frank, Martyn, Phil Eccles, Ralph & Rod – plus ground controller Major Tom; Ann & Geoff have also turned out once for the team this winter.
Tom is stepping down!: Captain Tom Fraser has done an incredible job organising the Veterans for 12 years - thank you Tom. So we're looking for a new volunteer Captain!
What is it? A popular format. 14 teams make up the league, so weekly matches take place from end Sept to end March. It's more relaxed than the Summer League as it's played on a weekday afternoon so none of our opponents can use their young whizz kids against us.
The format is also informal: teams of 4 play 2 rubbers of 2 sets of doubles. It's usually mixed but any combination of men or ladies can turn out - a handicap system evens out the score. Then we have a chat over a cup of tea and a cake.
Summer League - match fixtures have been drawn & start 25th April
We have Men's, Ladies' & Mixed teams in the local Kendal leagues. If members are interested in playing some more competitive tennis please make yourself known to the team captains

New Coaches To Be - Good Luck with the course!
Two of our club members are taking their Level 1 coaching qualifications to help David with Junior coaching at our Club. Dylan has recently joined with his family after moving down from Aberdeenshire and is a keen player. Philip was a past junior member of the Club who went to Uni in Newcastle and has rejoined on his return. We wish them all the best.
Dylan George (on the left) and Philip Martin (on the right) are taking their Level 1 Coaching Qualifications in April.
Men's Tennis Evening
We are pleased to report that the Men’s Monday evening foursome which ran in 2014-15 has grown into a Men’s eightsome during the last (2015-16) winter. (Usually 8 as long as not too many of the chaps are ill, injured, or away!) This is run on a rota basis to ensure that we have multiples of 4 playing so that we can get “stuck in” during the session and not have to swap round too frequently or have to risk injury by sitting out on cold winter evenings. These sessions feed players into the Men’s & Mixed team squads; if anyone has thus far missed being on the rota and would like to be included, by all means contact Tom the rota guru on 015395 36324.
Some form of Men’s rota will continue during the summer, but may well be reduced to fit in with league match commitments – and may be switched to a different evening depending on the match schedule.
Clubhouse and Courts
Do you have the right tennis shoes?
Our courts are one of our most valuable assets - costing £90 per week. Wearing the right shoe for the court will increase the life of its surface. Here's some guidelines:
- Avoid taking mud on court by brushing your footwear at the entrance.
- Wear low tread depth and non-marking soles suitable for astro-turf. It is preferable to use footwear designed for tennis. Coloured soles should be non-marking - you can test them on the loose piece of astro-turf at the court entrance. A rugged tread will tear the fibres of the carpet. See examples below.
Court Hire & Booking - online booking working well
Courts can be booked through the 'Book a Court' link on the homepage of our website.
Visitors can also pay online by Paypal on the 'Payments' page or by cash at the honesty box on court. A confirmation email supplies the key code for the court key safe (by the court gate). There is a visitor charge of £15 for 2 hours.
Membership - reminder to renew by March 31st.
New Members - we are continuing our free trial membership for adults of 3 sessions for prospective new members; also a 'buddy' will ensure new members are welcomed and shown the ropes.
Renewals - reminder to those who are still playing but have not yet paid to renew by March 31st. You can renew online with our online payment system.
