MEN'S SINGLES

Tom got off to a flyer with a 4-0 lead in the 1st set, just like v Rod last year when Tom ran out of steam & lost.

Then Phil got back into it but Tom was too far ahead to lose the 1st set. Then Phil really got his act together, Tom started tiring especially with the wet balls, and Phil raced off to 4-1 in the 2nd, which rapidly became 5-2. Tom got back to 5-4, but couldn’t maintain it & Phil held serve for 6-4.

There was a 2nd wind from somewhere though: Tom found himself 4-1 up in the 3rd, with court & balls drying out, was serving at 30-30 when Phil got an outrageous net-cord. The following serve didn’t come back, which got Tom to deuce but his head kept saying “should be 5-1”, and suddenly it was 4-4 and Tom’s legs had gone. Not sure how (perhaps Phil’s had as well), but Tom held serve for 5-4, then thought “go for broke” on the service returns to avoid rallies when he couldn’t move or Phil’s lobs & drop-shots – they all went in somewhere near the corners, and suddenly it was all over.

Absolutely knackered, it was a superb morning’s tennis, thanks to Dylan for organising it & the pain-killer supply.
