April is National Kite Month
What is National Kite Month? Every year in April Kite enthusiasts across North America celebrate the history and the future of the world's favorite pastime by letting their kites fly. It's in the rules to fly kites in April.
The Friendly Rokkaku Fly (not a battle) was on Sunday, April 21. Photos are posted on the Present Day Photos page.
Bug Light Fun Fly (formerly the Bug Light Kite Festival)
Saturday, May 18, 2024
There is no official sponsor for this event, so once again the day is just for fun. Flyers with big kites/inflatables are especially welcome on this day, the more the merrier. There's nothing wrong with turning the sky into a big-kite dance party.
The city has its' "SpringFest in Mill Creek Park" happening on this day, as well a "Skatepark Jam" event at the community center. The Mill Creek Park event starts around 11am. The road leading to Bug Light Park may be busy so consider getting to Bug Light earlier rather than later.
Start time is around 11am. Rain date is the following Sunday, May 18.
Ralphs' Fun Fly
Saturday, May 25, 2024
This is a day for flying, having fun and talking with Ralph.
Start time is around 11am.
No rain date
Hank's Kites & Critters Day at Bug Light Park
Saturday, June 15, 2024
On this day we will fly Hank's kites and critters and spend some time remembering the man. In the past, Hank would bring his trailer to the park and club members would raid it and fly his stuff. This year Hank won't be driving the trailer in, but perhaps someone in his family will. Plus, some club people have custody of a few of Hank's things. There's no telling what you may see in the sky on this day.
Start time is around 11:00am
Rain date is Sunday the 16th
Red-White-Blue Fun Fly, Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Bug Light Park
This is the day to haul out any red-white-blue kites you have, and if your kites' color palette doesn't extend that far, just haul out something else that fits the wind. It's not a bad idea to get to the park early for the best parking.
Start time is around 11am.
If the 4th is lousy for flying then Saturday, the 6th, will substitute.
Vintage Kite Fly, Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Bug Light Park
A gathering for kite people who have kites that hardly ever get flown because they are just too old and faded, too precious to risk flight or too tedious to put together and fly. Vintage (really old) kites are especially welcome. Kites do not have to be flown, and show-and-tell works just fine. On this day it's possible to see kite history, flying or not. Here's a link to a previous Vintage Kite Fly day, from 2023.
Start time is around 11am.
Capriccio Festival of Kites
Saturday, September 7, 2024
at Ogunquit Beach
This event officially starts at 9am. It's a beach, so the tide cycle needs to be considered. Here is a link for tidal and other information in the Ogunquit Beach area, or click the picture for the same link. Here is the link to Crickets Corner Beach & Toy Facebook page.
Romac Orchards Apple Fly
Saturday, September 21
at Romac Orchards in Acton, Maine
This is a unique place to fly, and it can be a lot of fun. There is an apple orchard right there, so think about that for a minute (apple pie, apple crisp). Here's a link to their web site: https://www.romacorchards.org/.
