Best of Sail Magazine's Things that Work
Payson, Herb ed. BEST OF SAIL MAGAZINE'S THINGS THAT WORK. International Marine (McGraw Hill) 1998. 194 p. drawings.
Much of Sail Magazine is a little too glossy for me and seems dedicated to selling big new boats of the Ben, Bav and Jen variety. One section I do like is the Things that Work column which consists of ideas from readers of things that they have developed to meet needs aboard their own boats . This book brings together a couple of hundred ideas that do indeed work. They have been grouped into areas such as maintenance, modifications, and cruising and sub divided within those categories. Cruising tips for example contains ideas for anchoring, docking and mooring, creating storage, galley innovations, life at anchor, navigation, safety, and dinghys.
Not every idea is suited to my own pocket cruiser but there's lots to chew on here and I take comfort that Herb Payson has edited this book. If Herb thinks its a useful idea then its worth looking at.
