When Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, died 22 Aug 1545 at Guildford Palace, he had been married several times, and in addition had an illegitimate daughter Frances. His eldest son Henry Brandon, born 18 Sep 1535 was named the 2nd Duke of Suffolk, but died still a minor, of the "sweating sickness" on 14 Jul 1551, at Cambridge where he was a student. His only full sibling living, Charles Brandon was then the 3rd Duke of Suffolk but died "within twelve hours", also of the "sweating sickness".

Although these two boys had half-siblings, "being but of the half-blood, could not inherit any thing from these two Dukes, and thereford in the second of Queen Elizabeth, the descendants of William Brandon, his grandfather, being found his next heirs, that great inheritence whereof he died seized in fee, came to be shared amongst them, which were these, viz, Sir Henry Sydney, Knight, William Cavendish, Esq; Thomas Glemham, Esq; John Kersey, and Francis Kersey, his son by Margaret his wife deceased, as heir of the said Margaret; Christian Darnell, widow, Walter Ascoughe, Esq, and Henry Ascoughe, his son by Elizabeth his wife, and John Trye and Elizabeth his wife."
