Why was Gandhi so successful in leading the charge against British Colonialism in India?

In 1906 Gandhi wrote: "The British have not taken India; we have given it to them. They are not in India because of their strength, but because we keep them."

For this paper you will be analyzing the modes and effects of imperialism in India and how Gandhi fought to gain independence. You will need to provide historical background on imperialism/colonialism, as well as on Gandhi himself and his philosophy on non-violence.

Your essay should follow standard essay format with an Introduction containing a clear thesis, 3-4 body paragraphs with at least two pieces of evidence to support each argument, as well as a conclusion. Your essay should also address an alternate argument; this could include why Gandhi did not like violence, or whether or not Gandhi was actually successful. However your are not limited to these.
