Slavery and Sugar
Overview:
This unit begins with defining colonialism and then moves into an analysis of the economic, social and political factors that brought the area of the Caribbean under colonial control. Students will complete an analysis of primary and secondary source texts on the sugar and slave industry as a lens to understanding the impact of colonialism on the people in the region. This unit provides the contextual background necessary for students to understand some of the crucial causes of the Haitian Revolution.

What drove the Sugar Trade?
Final Assessment:
Utilizing a range of primary and secondary resources, students will write a paper addressing the question of "what drove the sugar trade in the Caribbean and at what cost?". Sources, assignment and rubric are included in this section.
