William was a foreman. He worked for the British Mine and also the BHP Pty Ltd mine. He was known as a kindly man. Though not religious, he neither drank nor swore. He enjoyed his garden and grew his own vegetables. He kept chickens and a cow and owned a horse and buggy.
William received a pair of gold cuff links as a reward for bravery for the part he played in locating the two Turkish gentlemen who opened fire on a picnic train outside Broken Hill on New Year’s Day 1915. The two Turkish shooters escaped to hide in an outcrop of white quartz rocks near the Cable Hotel on the outskirts of Broken Hill. The police asked William if he had observed where the gentleman had gone, as they had passed by his backyard in their escape. He rode on his bicycle to show the police where they had fled.
They had homes in Pell Street, Railwaytown, 406 Galena Street on the Silverton Road and also 2 homes in Newton Street, one of which was at number 213.
William Thomas WINDERS died on 17-8-1929 in Adelaide. He is buried in Broken Hill.
Florrence survived another 31 years after William died. She never remarried.
She died on 19-11-1950 in Broken Hill. Aged 65.
