I was born in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia in 1968. Broken Hill is a mining town where silver, lead & zinc were mined from 1883. By the time I was born most of the ore was gone but it was still then a town of about 30,000 people.
Both my parents were born in Broken Hill, and even though only three of my four grandparents were born there, the fourth grandparent moved there at a very young age. So that Broken Hill red dust is very much running through my veins.
I began looking into my family history in about 1988, but didn't get really serious about it until 2001. My first aim was to trace all my ancestors back to the year when they arrived in Australia. Most of them arrived in the mid-1800's, the latest one arriving in 1911. Most came through South Australia, but I also had ancestors who came through Victoria & Tasmania. Wherever they arrived, they all had descendants who moved to Broken Hill in order for me to be born there.
Like a lot of Australians, most of my ancestors came from the United Kingdom, however I also have a branch that came from Germany, and of course the name 'Nilsen' is Norwegian.
In the sidebar are Subpages of the surnames of my ancestors, and others, that I have researched:
