Edward Gribbin was born on 7-4-1812 in Cornwall. He was the son of Edward & Ann GRIBBIN who were married on 10-12-1809 in Cornwall.
Edward Gribbin married Mary Ann Oates on 24-7-1834 in Cornwall and had four children before Mary died in the 1st Qtr of 1848 at Mt. Hawke, Cornwall.
Mary Ann Oates was born on 16th April 1810, presumably in Kenwyn, Cornwall. She was the daughter of George Oates & Elizabeth Trezise who were married on the 21st August 1802 at Kenwyn.
Edward & Mary Ann had 4 children:

The family appear in the 1841 census living at Short Cross, St. Agnes, Cornwall. The census records Mary's (1834) name as Elizabeth, not Mary, but the age is correct. Edward (30), Copper Miner. Mary (31), Elizabeth (5). Also living in the house are 4 related copper miners: Elisha Gribbin (16), Elijah Gribbin (14), Samuel Gribbin (12) & John Gribbin (10).
After Mary Ann's death in 1848 Edward married Mary Jeffery on 26-9-1848 in St. Agnes, Cornwall.
Mary Jeffery was baptised 17-11-1822 at St Agnes. Her parents were Thomas and Grace Jeffery (nee Tregaskes).
This family appear in the 1851 census of Cornwall living in Meneguisey. Mary, aged 30, is listed as the head of the house as Edward was working at the mine at the time the remunerator called. Mary is aged 15 and is listed as a stepdaughter. She was working as a copper miner. Edwin is 8 and James is 6 years.
The Gribbin's arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on the 'Confiance' on the 12-9-1854. The 'Confiance' sailed from Plymouth, England on the 10-6-1854. The passenger list had listed: Edward GRIBBIN (age 42), Mary (age 32). They had three children with them: Mary aged 17, Edwin aged 10 and James aged 8. The shipping record states that they originated from Devon in England.
I would assume they settled in Greenock, South Australia as that is where James was reported as living when he married.
Mary Gribbin (senior) remarried later in life. She married John Phillips on 9-6-1886 at the residence of the groom in Kadina. She was 63 years old at the time.
Edward GRIBBIN died on 24-1-1884 at Wallaroo Mines. Age 73. He was buried in Kadina cemetery on the following day.
Mary Philips died on 3-7-1902 in Kadina, aged 80. She was buried in Kadina cemetery on the 31-7-1902. She lived at Wallaroo Mines.

6)Thomas Oliver GRIBBIN.

*Died 23-8-1877 in Kadina.
James & Caroline lived in Kapunda for a time before moving to the ‘Copper Triangle’ on the upper Yorke Peninsula around 1868.
James may have moved to Kadina as a miner but became a storekeeper in the area.
It would appear though he got into financial trouble as he is appying for insolvency in February 1876 and offering to pay his creditors 3s in the pound.
Twelve months later he is selling by public auction all outstanding ‘Stock-in-Trade’ from his grocery business and also some of his personal and household effects.
By November of 1877 his accounts are settled and he pays his creditors fourpence and one-eighth of a penny in the pound.
He continues to appear in Copper Triangle papers up until November 1878.
The may may have moved then to Appila-Yarrowie but can be found in Adelaide by 1882.
Strange things seem to happen to the family in Adelaide.
Their daughter, Delia, falls pregnant at age 14, alledegedly to a William Arthur Jones. Delia claimed that she first met Jones in May 1882 in Yarrowie and they had ‘kept company’. Jones admitted to having unlawful intercourse with Delia but denied he was the father of the child. Jones successfully defended the case by claiming that Delia was of immoral character and that her mother, Mrs Gribbin, kept a house for prostitution.
Certainly some of the family moved to Broken Hill as well.
The marriage between James & Caroline is breaking down after the move to Adelaide, and James is starting to desert the family.
COURTS. Adelaide : Monday, August 29 1887. (Before Mr. S. Beddome. P.M.) James Gribbin pleaded not guilty to a charge of deserting his wife and three children. Mr. C. G. Varley appeared for the prosecutrix, and Mr. H. E. Downer defended. Dismissed ; Mrs. Gribbin to pay the hearing.
However knowing that James is charged with deserting his family once, it is possible he did it again.
There is a James Oates Gribbin in Castlemaine between the years 1914-1919. One electoral record states he was a miner.
He is admitted to the Sunbury Asylum, Victoria on the 7th January 1920 suffering from Senile Dementia. He was aged 56 at the time. The record states that he was previously a resident of Prahan, and a Matmaker by trade. He died on the 31st May 1922 and was interred in the Sunbury Cemetery.
Caroline GRIBBIN remarried a Stephen Moyle (born Cornwall-father was Henry Moyle-he was a mason) on 4-1-1896 in Adelaide when she was 50.
Caroline Moyle had a shop in Broken Hill which was a general store.
Caroline GRIBBIN died (as Caroline Moyle) in 1912 in Broken Hill and was buried on 8th November. Stephen Moyle died at the age of 87 on the 14-5-1933 at Tumby Bay.
