The surname IND is first found in London in 1369 with Robert de Ynde. The name means ‘the dweller at the end of the village’.
The family lived in the East End of London. The Ind’s were most likely poor working class people. The East End of London was a poor, lower class area where land and labour were cheap. Living conditions were very cramped, often with families of 10 or more living in small dwellings. The area had no adequate drainage, so conditions were filthy, smelly and generally rough. Crime was rife.
In the 17th century, Thomas Neale became a local landowner of Shadwell, and built a mill and established a waterworks on large ponds, left by the draining of the marsh. The area had been virtually uninhabited and he developed the waterfront, with houses behind as a speculation. Shadwell became a maritime hamlet with roperies, tanneries, breweries, wharves, smiths, and numerous taverns, built around the chapel of St Paul's.
This line of IND’s can be traced back to the 1730’s in England with the birth of Ambrose IND in c1731 in Shadwell, London.
The area built up rapidly in the 19th century, mainly to accommodate immigrant workers and displaced London poor, and developed a reputation for poverty, overcrowding, violence and political dissent.
As with most of the East End of London, Stepney was sparsely populated marshland until the 19th century, when the development of London's docks and railways, combined with slum clearance, pushed the displaced poor and various immigrants looking for work into cheap housing being built in the area.

George & Mary Ann Edwards applied for assisted passage on 14-8-1839. They arrived in South Australia on 6-2-1840 aboard the ‘Rajastan’. The ship left London on 27-10-1839 . The shipping list recorded George Richard Edwards (age 32) and Mary Ann Edwards (age 23). With them were two children. One was John Ind, Mary Ann’s brother. He was 12 years old at the time. The other child with them was listed as ‘George C’ and was 7. He could be an illegitimate son of Mary Ann Inds, or possibly another relation. George Edwards was a carpenter. They lived at 5 Henry Street, Pentonville, England.
The Edwards lived in Albert Town for a while. They appear there in the 1841 Adelaide census. Later they moved to farmland near Murray Bridge.

John IND was born at Bethnal Green, London on 10-11-1826. He was christened on 3-8-1828.
He arrived in South Australia on 6-2-1840 aboard the ‘Rajastan’. The ship left London on 27-10-1839 (Reg. 8-2-1840). He was one of two children travelling with sister Mary Ann Edwards (nee IND) (age 23) and George Richard Edwards (age 32). John was 12 years old at the time. The other child with them was listed as ‘George C’ and was 7. He could be an illegitimate son of Mary Ann Inds, or possibly another relation.
It seems John lived first of all in Albert Town. He appears in the 1841 South Australian census with his sister & brother-in-law, and George. He is listed as John Edwards.

As an adult John was a farmer. He was a Methodist and lived in Adelaide, Pt. Gawler & Mt. Bryan. He seems to keep a close relationship with his sister and her family. In fact a lot of John & Mary Ann Ind’s children are named after George & Mary Ann Edwards’ children. Not only that but it appears one of John’s daughters marries her cousin, one of the Edwards’ sons.
