KREMMER
The Kremmers in Australia originated from Altheim in Baden, Germany. The spelling of the surname varies.
The church records for Altheim have been searched, and the earliest record is that of Jacobi Kremer who married Anna Maria Knorzers on 4th July 1684 in Altheim.
This page contains an extensive record of all the known ancestors of the Kremmers who settled in Tasmania, Australia.

Jacobi Kremer was born on 25th July 1726 in Altheim.
He married Margaretha Schmitt on 28th August 1751 in Erfeld.
Margaretha Schmitt may have been married previously. It is probable that she was born Margaretha Weinlein, the daughter of Joseph & Anna Maria Weinlein (nee Larbmans). This line of Weinlein can be traced back to the birth of Joannes Weinlein in Altheim in 1681. In the records of the birth of Margaretha’s children she sometimes appears as ‘Weinlein’ and other times as ‘Schmitt’. Maybe her first marriage was to a Schmitt, and second marriage to Jacobi Kremer.
Despite some discrepancies, there seems to be 7 children born to Jacobi & Margaretha Kremer, all born in Altheim:
1)Josephus Antonius Kremer. *Born May 1752.

Margaretha Emmert was born on 2nd June 1774 in Altheim. Her parents were Martini & Anna Maria Emert (nee Lohr). Martini Emert married Anna Maria Lohr 9th March 1764 in Altheim. This Emert line can be traced back to Georgi Emert who was born on 28th April 1619 in Altheim. This Lohr line can be traced back to Valentino Lohr in the early 1600’s in the town of Bretzingen, Baden.

Joseph Valentin KRAMER who was born on 10-11-1809 in Altheim/Walldurn, Baden, Germany. His parents were Joseph & Margaretha Kramer (nee Emmert). According to the IGI Josephus Kremer married Margretha Emmert on 28-1-1794 in Altheim, Baden, Germany.
Joseph was confirmed in 1825 in Altheim, aged 16.
Joseph first of all worked as a linen weaver, like his father. His father had died by 1828. Joseph later became a kitchen basket weaver. He could read & write.
He had a sister, Eva Margarethe Kramer who when unmarried had a child, Cornelius Kramer born 1828. Eva later married Joseph Anton Marz or Mainz.
Joseph Valentin Kraemer married Maria Josepha Loeffler on 13-2-1834 at Sankt Valentin Katholisch (St. Valentine Catholic), Altheim, Mosbach, Baden.
Maria Josepha Loeffler was born at 3:30 pm on 16-3-1812 in Altheim/Walldurn, Baden, Germany. She was christened on the same day at 5:30 pm. The daughter of Joachim & Theresia Loffler (nee Weinlen). Joachimus Loeffer married Theresia Weinlein on 28th January 1800 in Altheim, Baden, Germany. Her godparents were: Jakob Mayer (local citizen & Peter Andreas Haas (headmaster). This line of Loffler can be traced back to Melchoir Loffler who married in Altheim on 27-11-1708. This line of Weinlein can be traced back to Michael Weinlein who died in Altheim in February 1680.
Their were seven children born to Joseph & Maria Josepha Kramer, with one other born to Maria Loffler before she married Joseph. Although the father is not listed there is a good chance it is Josephs. All were born in Altheim:
1)Josef Anton Loffler. *Born 18-11-1833 in Altheim/Walldurn to unmarried Josepha Loffler.
2)Maria Josepha KRAMER. *Born 9-11-1835 in Altheim/Walldurn.
( Would have been 20 years old when her father immigrated to Australia and so possibly stayed in Germany).
3)Maria Anna KRAEMER. *Born 14-7-1838 in Altheim/Walldurn.
*Possibly married John Kelly before 1867 in Collin’s Cap near New Norfolk, Tasmania. No issue found.
4)Joseph Valentine KRAEMER. *Born 12-3-1840.
*Died 16-11-1888 in New Norfolk.

Maria Josepha Kramer died at 8am on 9-10-1850 and was buried at 8am on 11-10-1850 in Altheim.
On the 23rd March 1855 Joseph Kraemer left Germany to immigrate to Australia. He took his five youngest children and his wife’s sister, Maria Theresia Loffler. His emigration certificate lists ‘Joseph Valantin Kraemer with his sister-in-law Josepha Loeffler, 46 year old and his 5 children; Maria Anna, 17 year old, Joseph Valantin, 15 year old and Maria Ludwina, 13 year old, Josepha, 11 year old and Leopold Kraemer, 7 year old’. All were from Altheim and were heading for Sydney in Australia. Joseph was described as a 47-year-old man of slim build with brown/grey hair and blue eyes. He had a healthy looking face with a wide chin and big nose, although his teeth were ‘no good’. Joseph could read and write, Theresia could not.
Their journey took them first of all to Liverpool in England. They were part of 250 emigrants mostly of German origin who were sponsored by William Kirchner who had bought 300 tickets. The ship sailed from Mersey, Liverpool leaving on the 15-4-1855 and took 99 days. On the way measles broke out amongst the children and 19 deaths occurred. There were also 5 births on the journey. The ship’s surgeon reported considerable difficulty in the treatment of his patients, mostly caused by not being able to speak the German language. The ‘America’ arrived in Hobart on the 23-7-1855. The Hobart Town Mercury reported that most of the emigrants were intended to be settled in the Swan Pott district.
The passenger list reported:
*TA Kramer. Aged 47. Kitchen basket maker & farm labourer.
*A Maria Kramer. Aged 46. Girl servant.
* M Anna Kramer. Aged 16. Servant.
*Jos Valentine Kramer. Aged 15. Farm boy.
*M Ludwina Kramer. Aged 12.
*Joseph Kramer. Aged 10.
*Leopold Kramer. Aged 6.
All were from Baden in Germany and were Roman Catholic.
Apparently the KREMMER’s settled first of all in Glenorchy in Hobart. Within 2-3 years however they were living in New Norfolk. They lived there for some time and increased in number. It is not known when they took on the name ‘Kremmer’. This certainly was not their surname in Germany.
Joseph KREMMER married his sister-in-law, Maria Theresia Loffler on 23-6-1861 at St. Peter’s Catholic, New Norfolk. At the time Joseph was working as a farmer.
Maria Theresia Loffler was born on 29-3-1809 in Altheim, Buchen, Baden, Germany. The daughter of Joachim & Theresia Loffler (nee Weinlen).
Joseph KREMMER (senior) died on 7-4-1883 in New Norfolk at the age of 75.
Mary Theresa KREMMER died of ‘natural decay’ on 15-7-1878 at the age of 69.

Joseph Valentine Kramer was born 12-3-1840 in Altheim, Mosbach, Baden, Germany. At the age of about 15 he immigrated to Van Diemans Land with his family, leaving on 23rd March 1855 and travelling via Liverpool, England. He spent some time living in Glenorchy, Hobart but by the age of 17 he had settled in New Norfolk. He was a carrier, labourer and a farmer. He owned property in New Norfolk and Collin’s Gap.
Joseph KREMMER married Jane Bracelin (variant spellings) on 24-4-1862 at St. Peter’s Catholic, New Norfolk.
Jane was born c1840 at Donegal in County Tyrone, Ireland. The original surname is most likely spelt ‘Breslan’. Her mother’s name was Violet (born c1800). Jane arrived on 27-1-1857 aboard the ‘Great Tasmania’ (as Jane Braceland) aged 19. Also with her was Charles Braceland-aged 15, her brother. The ‘Great Tasmania’ departed on 1-7-1856. Jane was described as being tall, broad face, stout figure, blue eyes, remarkable looking. She was Roman Catholic. Her sister, Margaret Ridge, who was a Tasmanian convict, sponsored her passage to Hobart. Charles was a witness at Jane’s wedding. She also had two brothers named John & Patrick and another sister named Isabella, all of whom stayed in Ireland.
There is record that they had 6 children before Jane died at age 38 on the 7-10-1878 in New Norfolk.

Joseph’s second wife, Mary Ann, married again after Joseph’s death. She married Edward Murphy on 16-12-1896 in New Norfolk. She died on 17-1-1911 in Hobart. Before this however she had another child out of wedlock by Charles Wright of New Norfolk. The child was named Stanley Gregory Wright and was born on 14-11-1890 in New Norfolk. Although technically a “Wright’ this child grew up as a ‘Kremmer’ and all his descendents are named ‘Kremmer’.

Elizabeth KREMMER died a few years after Julia was born. Julia was first sent to an orphanage but was removed from there and went to live with Edward & Annie Jane McCarthy. The boys, you would assume, stayed with their father. It has been said that Charles was not a very good father. He would go bush tree felling, either leaving the boys home alone or taking them with him so that they missed school for many weeks.
Charles lived in German Gully. Although born in Australia he had a thick German accent and lived in a shed as a hermit. He was a recluse and said to be out of touch with the modern world. When visiting Les in Queenstown in 1926 whilst attending Julia’s funeral Charles woke up at 3am and tried to light a wood fire in an electric stove.
Charles KREMMER died on 3-9-1942 in Wynyard of carcinoma and anaemia.
Elizabeth KREMMER died on 6-7-1903 in Glenorchy, Hobart.

George Turriff KREMMER was born on the 24-2-1895 in New Norfolk.
As an adult he moved to Queenstown, probably to work on the mines.
He married Mabel (May) Florence Hall on 7-10-1914 in Queenstown.
Mabel (May) Florence Hall was born 12-5-1898 at 65 Howick Street, Launceston. Her parents were Arthur Henry Hall & Annie Jane Willis. For more information about HALL and WILLIS go to their pages.
George & May lived in Queenstown for a time where George worked on the mines. In February 1917 they moved to Broken Hill. Apparently George gave no indication he was moving with his family to Broken Hill. He had no contact with his brother for some time. They were terribly worried about what had happened to him. The police were involved in looking for George, without success. At Christmas 1918 they were living in Garnet Street. George was apparently not the best of husbands or fathers. His own father’s bad influence had rubbed off on him. Charles, his brother, also struggled in this area.
There are 4 children listed to George & May KREMMER:
1)Arthur George Charles KREMMER. *Born 3-5-1915 in Queenstown.
*Died 25-11-2001 in Armidale. Buried in Broken Hill. Aged 86.

d)Paul James Welsh.
e)Jennifer Lila Welsh.
4)Edith May KREMMER. *Born 13-11-1921 in Adelaide.
*Died 5-1-1923 in Morgan.
You could assume Elsie was named after her Aunty, Elsie May Hall.
Mabel Florence Kremmer also had another child by Leonard John Welsh, the man she lived with after leaving George Kremmer.
1)Leonard James (Jim) Welsh. *Born 15-1-1924 in Adelaide.
*Died 25-8-2000 in Adelaide.
*Married to Irene (Rene) Elizabeth Mary Unknown.
After spending about four years living in Broken Hill May deserted George on the Boxing Day, 1920, taking Walter, and was never seen again. She moved to Adelaide and lived for a while with friends in various houses in Adelaide West. At the time of Edith’s birth in 1921 she was living at 225 Waymouth Street in Adelaide. Although George is listed as Edith’s father on her birth certificate, he is not the informant of the birth. It is possible that Edith was not George’s daughter. The time between Mays leaving of George and Edith’s birth is about 11 months. Either George was unclear exactly when May left, or Edith is not George’s child.
By 1923 she lives as husband and wife with Leonard John (Banjo) Welsh in various houses in Adelaide West, and after 1943 in the Adelaide suburbs. There is no record of her marriage to Leonard Welsh in S.A., NSW or Victoria.
We know that in January 1923 May is in Weston’s Flat in the Riverland of South Australia with Leonard and Wally as this is where Edith dies of gastro enteritis and convulsions. She was taken to Morgan for medical aid but had died by the time they arrived. Banjo worked in the area tending the locks on the River Murray. They lived in Weston’s Flat in a tent.
Walter (Wally) always knew Leonard as his father. In fact he took Leonard’s surname and may never have known any difference. Wally worked in the kitchen of the camp for the building of the Tarcoola to Alice Springs railway line. He died one week before his retirement in a car accident out of Alice Springs. He used to drive into Alice Springs once a week to buy supplies for the camp. Coming back one afternoon he missed a bend in the road due to sun glare on the windscreen. The car rolled and he was killed. The two others in the car were uninjured.
George KREMMER, still in Broken Hill, was unable to care for two children and fostered Elsie out to a family in South Broken Hill. In about 1921 Elsie went to live with George & Lucy ALLEN of Patton Street, Broken Hill.
On the 17th January 1924 George applied for divorce on the grounds that May had deserted continually for over three years. Attempts were made to find May. An Adelaide lawyer was appointed to try to locate her and some enquires were made with friends in Adelaide city as to whether she was still there.
Advertisements were placed in the Barrier Miner newspaper on the 10th & 16th of September 1924, as well as in the Adelaide Advertiser on the 17th September 1924. May was ordered to appear in court on or before 17th February 1925. She did not respond.
A decree nisi was granted on the 5th May 1925 and made absolute on the 8th December.
Elsie lived with the ALLEN’s until she married in 1942. She lived in Broken Hill and out bush as George ALLEN worked as a railway fettler. She was raised as one of their own. She was always known as Elsie ALLEN, though apparently never formally adopted by the ALLEN’s.
George Turriff KREMMER remarried some years later. He married Ruby May Rolton in 1925 in Broken Hill. George lived with Arthur in a house at the top end of Oxide Street. Ruby was his cleaner.
Ruby was born in Broken Hill on 24-5-1906. Her parents were Randolph & Agnes Rolton.
George & Ruby had 6 children, all born in Broken Hill:
1)Dorothy (Doris) May KREMMER. *Born 24-1-1925.

George worked on the mines in Broken Hill as a foreman/shift boss for the Zinc mine. They lived at 41 Rainbow Avenue in one of the Zinc Mine cottages. He retired at age 62 with ‘dust on the lungs’ from working on the mines and lived on the pension. After retirement they moved to a house in 479 Argent Street near the Willyama Hotel. At the time of his death he was living at 142 Newton St.
May Welsh lived as Leonard’s husband until he died at age 76 (c1975). She stayed in her home in Plympton until the age of 96, even then almost refusing to leave. She saw out her days in a nursing home in Cowandilla, just west of Adelaide city.
She died as Mabel (May) Florence Welsh on 31-1-2000, almost 102 years old. She was buried in Centennial Park, Adelaide on 4-2-2000.
George Turriff KREMMER died of a stroke on 13-2-1966 in Broken Hill. Aged 70.
Ruby May KREMMER died of a heart condition on 7-5-1962 in Broken Hill. Aged 58.
*************************************************************************************************************
Elsie Iris Kremmer was born in Glenorchy, Hobart, Tasmania on the 28th June 1916.
She moved from Glenorchy to Broken Hill in February 1917. She would have been less than twelve months old. She spent the first few years of her life living with her mother and father in Broken Hill where her father worked on the mines. Divorce proceedings state that Elsie’s mother, May deserted her family on Boxing Day 1920, and they never saw her again.
Sometime in the following year (1921) Elsie was fostered out to a family in South Broken Hill. She went to live with George & Lucy Allen of Patton Street, Broken Hill. Her brother, Arthur remembered it being a very sad day when Elsie was placed into foster care. The Kremmers were living at the time in a house at the top end of Oxide Street.
Elsie lived in Broken Hill and also spent some time living in the outback when George Allen worked as a railway fettler on the Menindee line. They came back to Broken Hill when Elsie was about 12 years of age. Elsie went to school until age 14 and then she worked as a domestic. She worked at the Broken Hill hospital from the age of 17 until age 26. She was a ward maid (cleaner).
She was always known as Elsie Allen, though apparently never formally adopted by the Allen’s. Elsie lived with the Allen’s until she married in 1942.
Elsie Iris Kremmer married Leslie Thomas (Pat) LAMONT on 14th March 1942 at Central Street Methodist Church, South Broken Hill.
