This is a short (2miles), flat walk with views that make Portsmouth look attractive across the water of Langstone Harbour. If you start and feel like going further, then you can continue on the coast path.
Cross the bridge on to Hayling Island and park in the car park on the right, at grid reference SU719 039.
WHEEL CHAIRS can access much of this walk. The looping part of the walk does have steps at one end, but the Puffing Billy Coast Path is a flat accessible surface.Â
Take the footpath by the entrance to the car park, following the shoreline.
A little way along there is a path on the right heading back towards the mainland. Take this and enjoy the harbour views. This is the old railway line, closed in the 1960s, that used to be the main link bringing tourists to the coast. There is a lone train signal as a reminder of its history.
When you have had enough of this view, retrace your steps back to the main path and continue until you see the "Langstone Waterside Walk" sign. Take the waterside walk. Here you will overlook the harbour and see traces of the old oyster beds. There are boards explaining the history of the area.
Nelly wasn't too interested in the history, but did enjoy the stony beach and racing up and down the path.
At the end of this section, the path loops back to the old railway line where you can loop back to the car park.
