Mrs. Savannah Cowdin is a third grade elementary teacher at Slade Elementary School is Laramie, Wyoming. She is also a long-time resident of Wyoming and attended school in Rock River, Wyoming. During her time in high school, she realized her dream was to become a teacher and be the first in her family to attend college.
Mrs. Cowdin attended the University of Wyoming and earned her bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education. After graduation, she knew she wanted to reside in Laramie and her first teaching position was at her childhood school in Rock River. She worked there for three years as a Title 1 Reading teacher which she describes as her most rewarding job. Mrs. Cowdin enjoyed watching before her eyes the children's knowledge and skill of becoming better readers and grow their reading skills each day. Soon, a teacher position became open at Slade Elementary School and she became the new third grade teacher. All in all Mrs. Cowdin has been teaching for twelve amazing years. This past summer she graduated with a masters degree from Western Governors University with a degree in Curriculum Instruction. One fact I found interesting during our interview was that she wanted her masters degree in special education because that has been a passion of hers since she was a Title 1 teacher. She was told by the principal that after her received her masters degree she would have to only be a special education teacher at Slade and not continue her position as a third grade teacher. My first thought was how unfair this is and would be for Mrs. Cowdin. She is a great teacher and I felt she would be punished for continuing her education, because of course, an employment positions would have to be available in special education.
It is always so interesting to me to discuss with educators the type of technology that is being used in their classroom or how they teach their students in general. Mrs. Cowdin is very fond of her students using iPad's and apps. There are so many apps for Math and she likes her students to practice their multiplication factors on the iPad's. She also allows them to search for facts on the iPad's regarding Science and search the National Geographic website. Just last year, the library was able to purchase new Kindles for the students to share with each grade. Mrs. Cowdin uses the Kindles for her students to read books that are not available in print at the library.
This interview had a fantastic outcome and I really enjoyed learning about Mrs. Cowdin and her background. It was also a great take away to learn how she uses technology to assist her as an aid in her classroom. Slade Elementary School has an amazing teacher in Mrs. Cowdin.
