The Tall Poppy Syndrome Syndrome

In his "Histories", Herodotus tells an incident about Periandros, a tyrant of Corinth and one of the Seven Wise Men of ancient Greece. In 627 BC Perandros succeeded his father, Kyphelos, who, according to Herodotus, "many of the Corinthians have claimed that much money has fallen away, many of most of the souls." In the early years, Periandros  ruled wisely, but he turned into a tyrant harder than Kyphelos.

Herodotus then writes that Periandros sent a follower to Thrasybulos, the tyrant of Miletus, in order to ask his opinion about the best way of government and ensuring social stability. Thrasybulos led the envoy of Periandros to the sown fields outside the town of Miletus, where the wheat had matured. And in front of the astonished eyes of envoy of Periandros, he began to clash and furiously cut off whatever ear was higher than the others ("that is, how many of the stubborn superiors, who have been defeated") without saying a word about the way of government.

Returning to Corinth, the envoy told Periandros that Thrasybulus was a daredevil; he was sowing his crop by stinging the best ears. But Perandros caught the impression: the tyrant of Miletus advised him to exterminate the citizens who stand out so that they do not threaten his authority. Equality down, the message, favors tyranny. Aristotle mentions the incident in his "Politics" (the wheatgrass is referred to as corncrake, not that it matters), and, a few centuries later, Titus Libius tells in the "History of Rome" something similar to the emissary Tarquinius Sextus who visited Roman King Lucius Tarquinius. Lucius went out to his garden and started to cut the tallest poppies; and Sextus followed his advice and killed the best citizens in the city of Gavioi. Hence the expression "Tall Poppy Syndrome" which contains the image of beheaded.

In the present world, the principle of equality is interpreted as equality between dissimilarities; between competent and inadequate, intelligent and immoral, between honest and dishonest. The people who are elated, who take pride in socially positions, who acquire wealth and personal happiness, are considered either shamefully fortunate and luck, prestige, welfare is a matter of zero summation - or shamefully overpriced. Many do not stand the thought that there are fellow human beings smarter, nicer and better. That's why they do everything they can to help them:  It is more self-destructive than catastrophic behavior. Although, indeed, suspicion is raised over the integrity of the "superhuman", it actually hurts many who, instead of investing time and energy in improving their own lives, are committed to depreciating and exacerbating the lives of others.

A feature of Tall Poppy Syndrome is that people who try to decapitate those who are the best do not admit their inadequacy; modesty does not overdo them. Instead, they think they have been wronged by the circumstances, by the system and, above all, by their own "better" advocates; and that they deserve more, much more. This attitude marks all societies; the degree and the intensity vary: they involve factors of social meritocracy or nonrecruence, ruling ideology, provincial or cosmopolitan tradition and education. Fascism and Nazism (much less communism) were ideologies and systems of equalization at the level of the masses. And they naturally stressed the dialectic of this equation downward with despotic leadership, with the worship of the leader.

The Crab Mentality - The Law of Jante 

Where the policy of equalizing prevails, the chosen Law of Jante  also applies. Jante is a fantastic provincial city in Denmark, where the inhabitants are like the crabs in the bucket: some of the crabs manage to climb the surface and while they are ready to escape, the other crabs pull them down. If I can not achieve something, I want you not to be able to. The chosen Law of Jante, which Scandinavian writer Aksel Sandemose says in his book " A fugitive crosses his tracks" (1933). Under the Law of Jante, do not dare to think that you know or that you can do more than we do And if your head comes out, the guillotine will cut it off.

There are ten rules in the law. The ten rules state:

1.   You're not to think you are anything special.

2.   You're not to think you are as good as we are.

3.   You're not to think you are smarter than we are.

4.   You're not to imagine yourself better than we are.

5.   You're not to think you know more than we do.

6.   You're not to think you are more important than we are.

7.   You're not to think you are good at anything.

8.   You're not to laugh at us.

9.   You're not to think anyone cares about you.

10. You're not to think you can teach us anything.

An eleventh rule recognised is …

11. Perhaps you don't think we know a few things about you?
